We evaluated the efficacy of ceftazidime or colistin in combination with polyclonal IgM-enriched immunoglobulin (IgM-IG), in an experimental pneumonia model (C57BL/6J male mice) using two multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, both ceftazidime-susceptible and one colistin-resistant. We assessed trends in treatment of patients with CRE from 2012 through 2018. We detected decreased utilization of aminoglycosides and colistin and increased utilization in extended-spectrum cephalosporins and ceftazidime-avibactam. We found significant uptake of ceftazidime-avibactam, a newly approved antibiotic, to treat CRE infections.

Using an in vitro pharmacodynamic model, a multidrug-resistant strain of Acinetobacter baumannii was exposed to colistin methanesulfonate alone and in combination with ceftazidime. Pre- and postexposure colistin sulfate MICs were determined. A single daily dose of colistin methanesulfonate combined with continuous-infusion ceftazidime prevented regrowth and postexposure MIC increases.
