OBJECT: In recent years, the classical vertebroplasty has tended to be replaced by vertebral augmentation procedures. This article discusses the reliability of vertebral augmentation procedures using balloon kyphoplasty or a spine jack system, with intraoperative CT scan control coupled with the neuronavigation system as a treatment option for cervical and upper thoracic spine lesions.
METHODS: In our neurosurgical department, in the past two years, 11 patients underwent either a kyphoplasty or a vertebral augmentation by a Spine Jack via a transpedicular route, under perioperative 3D imaging

The present investigation of the cervical region of the vertebral column at eight post-ovulatory weeks is the first such study based on prec … an occipito-axial joint. Part Z appears to be the centrum of the axis. The articular columns of the cervical vertebrae are twofold, as in the adult: an anterior (atlanto-occipital and atlanto-axial) and a posterior (from the lower aspect of the axis downwards). Alar and transverse ligaments are present. Cavitation is not found in the embryonic period in either the a …

In this double-blind, controlled, cross-sectional study, we compared structural changes in the cervical vertebrae of patients with nonradiographic axial spondyloarthropathy (nr-axSpA), patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and a control group. We used the modified Stoke Ankylosing Spondylitis Spinal Score (mSASSS) to determine whether the involvement of the cervical spine occurs earlier and is more severe than that of the lumbar spine in axial spondyloarthropathy (axSpA). A statistically significant difference was found in the total mSASSS between the AS and nr-axSpA groups (p = 0.038), b…

Around a third of all cervical spine injuries occur in the upper cervical spine in the area between the occiput and the second cervical vertebra. The latter being the most common location of the injury with around 70%. But also atlas fractures, occipital condyle fractures, traumatic spondylolisthesis of C2, atypical fractures in the corpus area as well as atlantooccipital and atlantoaxial ligamentous lesions should be mentioned in connection with injuries in this area. In many cases, conservative therapy regimen is possible. In unstable or displaced injuries, however, surgical intervention is

Developmental stenosis without any significant spondylotic changes frequently occurs at C3 vertebra or below, and typically extends to C6-C7. However, high cervical focal canal stenosis is unusual. A case of cervical canal segmental stenosis at C2-3 level in addition to a developmental stenosis of the lumbar region, in a 45 year old male, has been presented in this article. The dynamics of the spinal canal in relation to the likely pathology of such conditions are reviewed. We speculate that focal segmental stenosis in the high cervical region may be due to a possible premature fusion of the n

Among 173 fatally injured bicyclists, the head or neck was the region most seriously injured in 86%. The frequency of injury to the head and neck region and the frequency of nonsurvivable (AIS 6) injury were highest among the cases aged 16 years or less. Vertebral fractures occurred most often in the highest cervical vertebra (C1) and progressively less often in lower vertebrae. The relationship between vertebral position and fracture likelihood is approximately log linear. Bicyclists with a relatively long time from injury to death tended to be older persons with survivable injuries. They oft

Management of poly-trauma patients presenting to the emergency room is usually a challenging and formidable task. Two of the common problems … weakness in all 4 limbs and CT cervical spine revealed complete anterior sublaxation of C5 over C6 cervical vertebrae in the first case and partial sublaxation of C5 over C6 cervical vertebrae in the second case confirming that spinal cord injury is the likely cause for these hemodynamic alterations. OBJECTIVES: After application of hyperosmolar mannitol the cerebrospinal (CSF) pressure is usually lowered within 30 min but this effect cannot be explained either by changes in intracranial blood volume and flow or by changes in brain volume. We assume that this effect of mannitol my be consequence of CSF volume decrease primarily in the spinal CSF due to high compliance of the spinal dura.
METHODS: To explore such a possibility we planned to separate spinal and cerebral CSF. In chloralose anaesthetized cats dorsal laminectomy of C2 vertebrae was performed and a plastic semi ring was positio

Titanium and its alloys are one of the mainstream materials for the manufacture of intervertebral cages. With the application on clinical, the problems of elastic modulus is relatively high, subsidence of adjacent vertebral implants and stress shielding after surgery have gradually exposed. In this paper, metal rubber made from titanium alloy wire was used to prepare cervical fusion cage (CFC), which was a porous material with buffering and vibration damping properties. The C5/C6 segment of the goat cervical vertebra was used as the research object. The shape parameters of the CFC were determi

Traumatic cervical spondyloptosis is an uncommon and severe form of facet joint dislocation that commonly leads to severe neurological damage. Decision making regarding the reduction and fixation technique is challenging, especially when a patient is neurologically intact, since an undiagnosed prolapsed disk at the involved level may lead to severe neurological consequences during reduction. A 24-year-old male was admitted after sustaining a severe direct axial blow to his head. Computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging scans revealed an acute C6C7 fracture dislocation with spondylop

In a consensus process with four sessions in 2017, the working group on "the upper cervical spine" of the German Society for Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery (DGOU) formulated "Therapeutic Recommendations for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Fractures to the Upper Cervical Spine", incorporating their own experience and current literature. The following article describes the recommendations for the atlas vertebra. About 10% of all cervical spine injuries include the axis vertebra. The diagnostic process primarily aims to detect the injury and to determine joint incongruency and integrity of the atl

OBJECTIVES: To examine the application of bioabsorbable screws for anterior cervical decompression and bone grafting fixation and to study their clinical effects in the treatment of cervical spondylosis.
METHODS: From March 2007 to September 2012, 56 patients, 36 males and 20 females (38-79 years old, average 58.3±9.47 years), underwent a novel operation. Grafts were fixed by bioabsorbable screws (PLLA, 2.7 mm in diameter) after anterior decompression. The bioabsorbable screws were inserted from the midline of the graft bone to the bone surface of the upper and lower vertebrae at 45 degree an

Haemangiomas are most commonly found in skin and subcutaneous tissue and are very rare in intramuscular region. Paraspinal musculature has been barely reported as location of intramuscular haemangioma while we could not find any literature reporting haemangioma in cervical paraspinal previously. We report a case of middle aged woman with a large intamuscular haemangioma involving left cervical paraspinal musculature extending from suboccipital region to C5 vertebra and reaching upto left parotid gland along with C6 vertebral body haemangioma.
