This report presents results of a comparison perineal muscle function between antepartum and postpartum measurements in a cohort of women with different perineal conditions after childbirth. Data were obtained by using prospective electromyographic perineometry measurements to objectively determine perineal muscle function before and after delivery in 102 women. In addition, 24 nulliparous, non-pregnant women were studied to determine the effect of pregnancy on perineal muscle function. A case series of three patients who recently arrived from Guatemala with histories and examinations consistent with torture is reported. A description of the clinical presentation of torture survivors is given, with recommendations for care by the family physician. The epidemiology and prevention of torture and human rights abuses are discussed. Survivors require interventions in the following spheres: biological, ie, physical signs of trauma; psychological, eg, post-traumatic stress; and social, ie, international prevention of torture by governments.

Approximately 5% of Americans over age 65, or 1.5 million individuals, currently reside in the nation's 20,000 nursing homes. The authors present material that lead to three conclusions about this population. First, nutritional deficiencies are common underlying causes of adverse clinical outcomes. Second, nutritional deficiencies are frequently not recognized. Third, opportunities for preventing or correcting undernutrition exist, provided that the significant and reversible nature of the nutrient deficiencies are identified.

Multiple vector-borne pathogens often circulate in the same vector and host communities, and seasonal infection dynamics influence the potential for pathogen interactions. Here, we explore the seasonal infection patterns of avian malaria (Haemosporida) parasites (Plasmodium and Haemoproteus) and West Nile virus (WNV) in birds and mosquitoes in suburban Chicago.
