The relation of FIMR programs and other perinatal systems initiatives with maternal and child health activities in the community.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association of the presence of a fetal and infant mortality review (FIMR) program, other perinatal systems initiative (PSI), or both in a community with the performance of essential maternal and child health (MCH) services by local health departments (LHDs). METHODS: Data were obtained from telephone interviews with professionals from LHDs across the United States. Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds of a LHD conducting each essential MCH service in communities with and without FIMR programs or with and without PSIs, adjusted for geographic area. RES…

The child health and illness profile-adolescent edition: assessing well-being in group homes or institutions.

The Child Health and Illness Profile-Adolescent Edition (CHIP-AE), a new standardized instrument, was administered to 63 adolescents living in group homes or institutions. Youth reported high levels of satisfaction with their physical health, resilience and problem-solving skills, and academic achievement. Youth reported low levels of self-esteem, emotional comfort and psychosocial stability, family involvement, and work performance. They also took more risks, had more threats to achievement, and had poorer peer influences than other youth. This study demonstrates the potential usefulness of t…

Chlamydial infection in a population of Ethiopian women attending obstetric, gynaecological and mother and child health clinics.

The prevalence of chlamydial infection was assessed in 1,846 Ethiopian women attending clinics in Addis Ababa. Sera were tested for type-specific anti-chlamydial antibodies using purified chlamydial antigens (C. trachomatis A-C (CTA-C), C. trachomatis D-K (CTD-K), Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGVI-3), and C. pneumoniae (CPn), in a micro-immunofluorescence (micro-IF) test. Three levels of chlamydial infection were established. Sera with: 1) antibodies to CTA-C, CTD-K, LGV 1-3 and CPn singly or in combination, are considered as evidence of overall exposure to chlamydial species (OEC); 2) antibodies

Translating caregiver-identified neighborhood features into quantitative variables for statistical analyses of effects on child health.

PURPOSE: Neighborhoods are hypothesized to affect weight-related outcomes in part through their influence on household food choices, but quantitative study findings have been mixed. This may reflect mismatch between variables analyzed and residents' experiences. Our objective was to identify quantitative variables corresponding to neighborhood features caregivers of young children find important for families' food choices. METHODS: In 9 focus groups in English and Spanish among low-income caregivers (n = 51) of young children aged < 5 years in Philadelphia, PA, participants identified feature

Child health implications of transitioning from charcoal to electric cooking in Uganda: a qualitative stakeholder study.

BACKGROUND: Household air pollution and cooking-related injuries from charcoal use remain major contributors to preventable child morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries, including Uganda. Electric cooking (e-cooking) could reduce children's exposure to these risks, yet adoption remains limited and the policy conditions shaping this transition are poorly understood from a child health perspective. OBJECTIVE: To explore policy stakeholder perspectives on transitioning from charcoal to e-cooking in Uganda and to examine perceived implications for child health related to hous…

Transitions from child to adult mental health care: the evidence-base for ESCAP guidance for clinicians.

The transition from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) presents significant challenges, underscoring the need for improved transitional care procedures. Few European countries have implemented national transition-related guidance, despite the potential of clinical guidance to support appropriate care decisions and practices. We conducted a literature review to inform the development of the European Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ESCAP) transition guidance for clinicians. Following systematic principles, four databases (Medlin

Eroding the healthy immigrant advantage in child mental health: The role of state-level policy climate.

Children and youth in immigrant families benefit from the health immigrant paradox, in which immigrants display a mental health advantage over U.S.-born Americans in spite of increased socioeconomic risk. This study examined whether hostile state immigration policy contexts are associated with a weakening of this advantage and whether racial spillover effects are present for racially and ethnically minoritized youth beyond immigration background. Data were drawn from the 2023 National Survey of Children's Health and the 2022 Immigration Policy Climate index. Survey-weighted logistic regression

Misophonia in a large treatment-seeking child and adolescent sample in mental health care in Germany and Austria.

BACKGROUND: Misophonia is a newly conceptualized disorder. Although its onset is usually in childhood and early adolescence, the current knowledge about etiology or treatment options for children and adolescents is still limited. This is the first study investigating treatment-seeking children and adolescents in routine mental health care with regard to misophonia symptomatology and co-occurring symptoms. METHODS: In this multi-center cross-sectional study, conducted in Germany and Austria, N = 214 participants completed measures on misophonia, anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorde

Development and evaluation of a personalised sleep care plan on child and adolescent in-patient mental health wards.

AIMS AND METHOD: The study evaluated a package of measures to improve sleep on psychiatric wards admitting patients from children and young people's services (CYPS). Sleep disturbance has significant impact on adolescent mental health, and in-patient wards can directly cause sleep disturbance, independent of the problem that led to admission. We developed a CYPS-specific package (TeenSleepWell) that promoted a better sleep environment, enhanced staff education about sleep, screened for sleep disorders, and raised awareness of benefits and side-effects of hypnotics. This included personalised s

MindLink: preliminary evidence on a virtual Community of Practice for child and adolescent mental health in the Australian context.

Faced with rising demands and limited resources available in most communities to address child and adolescent mental health presentations, increasing cross-specialty collaboration with healthcare providers such as paediatricians is critical. In this regard, there is growing interest in capacity building models such as 'Communities of Practice' to fill this gap. The purpose of this case study is to present the experience of implementing 'MindLink', a virtual Community of Practice model in the Australian public health system for cross-specialty upskilling and collaboration between paediatrics an

Needs and Expectations of Nurse-Led Digital Support Among Parents of Children in Child Health Care.

INTRODUCTION: Sweden has an extensive national child health care programme (CHCP) implying that all parents are offered support to raise their children and support them for healthy development. The programme is today built on personal physical contacts and digital components unusual. Although the digital world could be frightening and insecure, it also has benefits, because it is not dependent on face-to face meetings and is accessible more hours. In order to develop a digital channel to complement the CHPC, for the support of parents of children within child health care (CHC), parents' perspe…

The Indirect Effect of a Brief Couple Intervention on Child Mental Health Challenges via the Interparental Relationship.

BACKGROUND: Child mental health challenges have long-term implications for social and emotional functioning. The quality of the interparental relationship is an important contributor to children's mental health challenges. Evidence supports the use of brief couple interventions to enhance couple functioning, though secondary benefits to child outcomes are unknown. The current study examines whether changes to the interparental relationship following participation in a brief couple intervention, in turn, lead to changes in child mental health challenges. METHODS: Participants come from a secon

Prenatal substance exposure and child health: Understanding the role of environmental factors, genetics, and brain development.

Prenatal substance exposure (PSE) has been linked to adverse health outcomes, but its interactions with environmental and genetic factors remain unclear. Using data from the adolescent brain cognitive development cohort (n = 9,838; baseline age: 9.92 ± 0.62 years), we tested for the robust associations of PSE-caffeine/alcohol/tobacco/marijuana with children's health, cognition, and brain metrics after controlling for the environmental and genetic contexts. The environmental context involved birth, familial, and societal risk factors, while the genetic context included family histories and poly
