Exploring risk for abuse of children with chronic conditions or disabilities--parent's perceptions of stressors and the role of professionals.

BACKGROUND: Children with chronic conditions or disabilities are at an increased risk for abuse. High level of parental stress has been identified as possible trigger for abuse, were a combination of several factors are of importance, as lack of social support and limited resources in the neighbourhood. Suggestions for preventive measures have merely focused on parenting strategies and targeted intervention programmes. So far, little attention has been paid on how the risk for abuse might relate to parent's perceptions of stressors and the role of professionals. The purpose of the current stud

Predictors of referral uptake in children with disabilities in Bangladesh--exploring barriers as a first step to improving referral provision.

PURPOSE: Making services available to children with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries does not guarantee their use. This study aims to identify factors associated with the uptake of referrals in order to investigate barriers to service use. METHODS: Children with impairments identified in two districts of Bangladesh were invited to attend screening camps where their condition was confirmed; they were provided with referrals for rehabilitation and treatment services. Predictors of referral uptake were identified using logistic regression. RESULTS: Overall referral uptake was 47…

Reading and spelling disabilities in children with and without a history of early language delay: a neuropsychological and linguistic study.

Language delay is a frequent antecedent of literacy problems, and both may be linked to phonological impairment. Studies on developmental dyslexia have led to contradictory results due to the heterogeneity of the pathological samples. The present study investigated whether Italian children with dyslexia showed selective phonological processing deficits or more widespread linguistic impairment and whether these deficits were associated with previous language delay. We chose 46 children with specific reading deficits and divided them into two groups based on whether they had language delay (LD)

The experiences of families of children with cerebral palsy and complex disability after three years accessing the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

INTRODUCTION: In Australia, children with cerebral palsy and complex disability receive funded supports through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). This individualised funding scheme requires parents to navigate and advocate on behalf of their child, supported by expert reports, recommendations, and allied health services. Supports aim to enable participation in all areas of daily life, which may be otherwise largely inaccessible to children with complex disability and their families. This study aimed to explore the experiences of families of children with complex disability after

The Correlation Between Odontogenic Infection and Total Spectrum of Dental Caries with Oral Health Related Quality of Life in Children with Intellectual Disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: : Children with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) have a higher rate of untreated caries and often progress to caries with pulpal involvement or odontogenic infections. This can be assessed using the Caries Assessment Spectrum and Treatment (CAST) index and the Pulp Ulcer Fistula Abscess (PUFA) index. Dental problems often have an impact on quality of life, so Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) assessment is needed for ID children. PURPOSE: To identify and analyze the correlation between odontogenic infection, the total spectrum of caries, and OHRQoL in ID children. METHODS

Supporting young siblings of children with intellectual disabilities and/or visual impairments with the serious game 'Broodles': A mixed methods randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Siblings of children with neurodevelopmental conditions experience conflicting emotions and have an increased risk of mental health problems. Several sibling interventions have been developed, but few are readily available, leaving many siblings unsupported. Therefore, the free, online, self-administered sibling serious game 'Broodles' was developed. This study assessed its social validity and effectiveness in promoting quality of life, and inter- and intrapersonal factors in siblings (6-9 years) of children with intellectual disabilities and/or visual impairments. METHODS: A mixe

Safety analysis of adapted battery-powered ride-on toy car for children with disabilities using a modified test dummy with varying joint stiffness.

Adaptive ride-on toy programs have increased in popularity in recent years and provide novel rehabilitation tools as developmental aids for children with disabilities. While the adaptations made to these toys are intended to provide a safer experience for children with disabilities, safety concerns still exist. Within this context, the purpose of this study was to use a model with varying joint stiffness as a first-order approximation of a child with disabilities and to investigate whether modifications to ride-on toys are sufficient to prevent common injuries. Because the population of childr…

Descriptive Analysis of the Characteristics of Proven Cases of Sexual Abuse in Victims With Intellectual Disabilities and Children With Typical Development in Spain.

Children and people with intellectual disability (ID) are considered to be highly vulnerable and in need of special protection against sexual abuse (SA). The objective of this work was to analyze the characteristics of cases of SA in children with typical development and in people with ID in Spain. To do so, 25 cases of each type that had been investigated by specialized groups of the Judicial Police of the Spanish Civil Guard and that had been classified as proven and confirmed by police and forensic-medical evidence were analyzed. The results allowed the establishment of the typical minor vi

Psychometric validation of a novel instrument to measure caregiver-reported oral health-related quality of life in children with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is a critical yet underexplored dimension of well-being in children with intellectual disabilities, who experience a disproportionately high burden of oral diseases due to cognitive, behavioural, and self-care limitations. Existing paediatric OHRQoL instruments were developed for typically developing populations and may not capture the unique experiences of this group. This study aimed to evaluate the construct validity, criterion validity, and reliability of a newly developed caregiver-reported OHRQoL instrument specifically designed fo

Insufficient sleep among parents of children with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities: Findings from the 2011-2018 National Health Interview Survey.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) face greater health risks, yet insufficient sleep among this group has been understudied. Prior research has relied on small, condition-specific samples. This study examined the prevalence of insufficient sleep among parents of children with and without IDD in a nationally representative sample. METHODS: We analyzed 2011-2018 National Health Interview Survey data, including parents of children with IDD (n = 3378) and without IDD (n = 54,645). Multivariable logistic regression estimated adjusted odds rati
