Argenta clinical classification of deformational plagiocephaly.

INTRODUCTION: A stratification system is useful in deformational plagiocephaly (DP) to help categorize patients and reproduce a consistent treatment strategy. The Argenta classification is a clinical 5-point scale for unilateral DP and 3-point scale for central DP (CDP). METHODS: A retrospective review was completed for patients with DP and classified using the Argenta clinical classification by plastic surgeons at a tertiary medical center over a 12-year period. RESULTS: In the 4483 patients, type III was the most prevalent DP type (42%) followed by II, IV, I, and V. Within CDP, VIB was the…

Regional manifold learning for disease classification.

While manifold learning from images itself has become widely used in medical image analysis, the accuracy of existing implementations suffer … . We produce a single ensemble decision for each scan by the weighted combination of these regional classification results. Each weight is determined by the regional accuracy of detecting the disease. When applied to cardiac magnetic resonance imaging of 50 normal controls and 50 patients with reconstructive surgery of Tetralogy of Fallot, our method achieves si …

Saddle nose: classification and therapeutic management.

INTRODUCTION: The understanding and treatment of saddle nose have always been a surgical challenge. The authors propose a three-stage classification of this deformity as well as a treatment strategy adapted to each case. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out on 25 patients with saddle nose. After defining the three stages of saddle nose: minimal, moderate and major, the authors describe the treatment protocol adopted for each stage. RESULTS: This series comprised 3 cases of minimal saddle nose, 17 cases of moderate saddle nose and 5 cases of major saddle nose. Minimal …

Histologic classification of penile intraepithelial neoplasia.

Penile squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) and their corresponding precancerous lesions can be classified in 2 major groups: human papillomavirus (HPV) related and HPV unrelated. In the former (warty and basaloid SCC), there is a predominance of undifferentiated basaloid cells. In the latter (eg, usual, papillary, and verrucous SCC), the predominant cell is larger with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. Based on these morphologic features, a new term, "penile intraepithelial neoplasia" (PeIN), was proposed. PeIN was further subclassified into differentiated and undifferentiated, with the latter bein

Necrotizing fasciitis: classification, diagnosis, and management.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF), a life-threatening rare infection of the soft tissues, is a medical and surgical emergency. It is characterized by subtle, rapid onset of spreading inflammation and necrosis starting from the fascia, muscles, and subcutaneous fat, with subsequent necrosis of the overlying skin. Once suspected, immediate and extensive radical debridement of necrotic tissues is mandatory. Appropriate antibiotics and intensive general support avoid massive systemic diffusion of the infective process and are the key for successful treatment. However, early diagnosis is missed or delayed

Chapter 28: Classification of hypersensitivity reactions.

The original Gell and Coomb's classification categorizes hypersensitivity reactions into four subtypes according to the type of immune response and the effector mechanism responsible for cell and tissue injury: type I, immediate or IgE mediated; type II, cytotoxic or IgG/IgM mediated; type III, IgG/IgM immune complex mediated; and type IV, delayed-type hypersensitivity or T-cell mediated. The classification has been improved so that type IIa is the former type II and type IIb is antibody-mediated cell stimulating (Graves Disease and the "autoimmune" type of chronic idiopathic urticaria). Type …

Foveal TFCC tear classification and treatment.

During the last two decades, increased knowledge of functional anatomy and pathophysiology of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) have contributed to a change in surgeons' perspective toward it. The earlier concept of the TFCC as the "hammock" structure of the ulnar carpus has updated to the "iceberg" concept, whereby the much larger "submerged" part represents the foveal insertions of the TFCC and functions as the stabilizer of the distal radioulnar joint and the ulnar carpus, thus lending it greater functional importance. This article presents an algorithm of the treatment of trauma

Propeller flaps: classification and clinical applications.

Propeller flaps feature a highly reliable reconstructive method, based on a perforator vessel. Since their introduction in 1991, a great variety of propeller flaps have been described, according to their shape and their potential of coverage. Indeed, these flaps have progressively been refined and modified, concerning their vascularity and space design. The authors present a classification of propeller flaps. This anatomical classification is necessary to understand the dissection procedure and the differences between the numerous types of propeller flaps nowadays described. It is the internat…

Classification of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease.

Although the etiology of Perthes disease remains unknown 100 years after its first description, there are many articles that describe the disease course, final outcome, and results of treatment. A system of classification of the extent and severity of the disease is essential to understanding variability of Perthes, and along with the age of the patient when first affected, is useful in predicting long-term outcomes. Published reports of treatment strategies and their success depend on effective classification of the disease severity and radiographic result at final follow-up concerning head s…

Feline systemic hypertension: Classification and pathogenesis.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: the increased availability of indirect blood pressure monitoring devices in clinical practice over the past decade has highlighted the significance of systemic hypertension in the feline population. Without routine monitoring and appropriate intervention, cats with undiagnosed systemic hypertension may first be presented with sudden-onset blindness as a consequence of either hyphaema or retinal detachment. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: the primary aim in the early diagnosis and treatment of systemic hypertension is prevention of hypertensive target organ damage (with respect to th

Classification system of foramen magnum meningiomas.

BACKGROUND: Foramen magnum meningiomas (FMMs) are challenging tumors. We report a classification system based on our experience of 107 tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The three main algorithm criteria included the compartment of development of the tumor, its dural insertion, and its relation to the vertebral artery. RESULTS: The compartment of development was most of the time intradural (101/107, 94.4%) and less frequently extradural (3/107, 2.8%) or both intra-extradural. (3/107, 2.8%). When developed inside the intradural compartment, FMMs were subdivided into posterior (6/104, 5.8%), later…

Heart murmur classification with feature selection.

Heart sounds entail crucial heart function information. In conditions of heart abnormalities, such as valve dysfunctions and rapid blood flow, additional sounds are heard in regular heart sounds, which can be employed in pathology diagnosis. These additional sounds, or so-called murmurs, show different characteristics with respect to cardiovascular heart diseases, namely heart valve disorders. In this paper, we present a method of heart murmur classification composed by three basic steps: feature extraction, feature selection, and classification using a nonlinear classifier. A new set of 17 fe…

Updated clinical classification of pulmonary hypertension.

The aim of a clinical classification of pulmonary hypertension (PH) is to group together different manifestations of disease sharing similarities in pathophysiologic mechanisms, clinical presentation, and therapeutic approaches. In 2003, during the 3rd World Symposium on Pulmonary Hypertension, the clinical classification of PH initially adopted in 1998 during the 2nd World Symposium was slightly modified. During the 4th World Symposium held in 2008, it was decided to maintain the general architecture and philosophy of the previous clinical classifications. The modifications adopted during thi…

Congenital hand differences: embryology and classification.

Congenital hand differences affect approximately 1 in 500 persons and present unique diagnostic and classification challenges. The embryology of the hand and upper extremity is discussed, including the molecular basis for patterning of the upper limb. The Swanson/International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand classification system is described, along with a discussion of the difficulties in classifying congenital hand differences based on morphology or etiology.
