Modeling Geographic Uncertainty in Current and Future Habitat for Potential Populations of Ixodes pacificus (Acari: Ixodidae) in Alaska.

Ixodes pacificus Cooley & Kohls is the primary vector of Lyme disease spirochetes to humans in the western United States. Although not native to Alaska, this tick species has recently been found on domestic animals in the state. Ixodes pacificus has a known native range within the western contiguous United States and southwest Canada; therefore, it is not clear if introduced individuals can successfully survive and reproduce in the high-latitude climate of Alaska. To identify areas of suitable habitat within Alaska for I. pacificus, we used model parameters from two existing sets of ensemble h

Extreme-Climate-Driven Agricultural Trade Risk Sensing with Multimodal Consistency Learning and Edge Intelligence.

Extreme climate events increasingly amplify agricultural trade security risks across interconnected stages: agricultural production, commodity conditions, cold-chain storage, logistics distribution, and trade fulfillment. However, existing approaches predominantly focus on isolated stages and fail to model cross-stage risk propagation, enable real-time edge inference, or provide well-calibrated risk warnings. To address these challenges, a multimodal edge-intelligence framework, termed AgriClimate-EdgeNet, is proposed to jointly model climatic conditions, agricultural production, commodity ima

Tropical Atlantic multidecadal variability is dominated by external forcing.

The tropical Atlantic climate is characterized by prominent and correlated multidecadal variability in Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs), Sahel rainfall and hurricane activity1-4. Owing to uncertainties in both the models and the observations, the origin of the physical relationships among these systems has remained controversial3-7. Here we show that the cross-equatorial gradient in tropical Atlantic SSTs-largely driven by radiative perturbations associated with anthropogenic emissions and volcanic aerosols since 19503,7-is a key determinant of Atlantic hurricane formation and Sahel ra

Climatic and geographic temporal patterns of pain in the Multicenter Study of Hydroxyurea.

No multi-site comparisons have tested whether seasonally cold temperature or climate exacerbate pain intensity in sickle cell disease (SCD). We examined seasonal SCD pain intensity and frequency patterns and compared them with concurrent climate conditions (temperature and barometric pressure) and geography of patient residence in the Multicenter Study of Hydroxyurea (MSH). We conducted a time series analysis of the monthly average daily pain intensity (0-9 scale) and pain frequency of the 299 MSH patients from December 1991 to December 1994. We used both an unobserved component model (UCM) an

Adaptive policies balancing trade, productivity and cropland increases can support Zambia's nutrition security under future climate shocks.

Policies in sub-Saharan Africa are constrained by a limited knowledge of climate change extremes and a focus on agricultural production rather than nutrition supply. Here we model the impacts of future extremes on national-level calorie and nutrient supply in Zambia for production and nutrition focused policy scenarios. We identify the specific cropland, yield and import increases required to achieve climate-resilient nutrition security and highlight policy options.

The effect of climate change on economic growth in European countries: an empirical evidence from Panel ARDL approach.

This paper examined the impact of climate change on economic growth using panel data from 20 European countries during the period 1990-2020 and the estimation techniques of cointegration and the ARDL model. The empirical results reveal that precipitation; labour force and CO2 emissions have a positive effect on long-term economic growth in sample countries. However, temperature, foreign direct investment, and urbanization have a negative effect on growth over the same period. Therefore, our study highlights the complex links between climate, demographic, and economic developments in European c

Explainable Machine Learning for Predicting Global Malaria Incidence From 2000 to 2022 With Climatic and Extreme Weather Conditions Across 78 Endemic Countries: A Retrospective Ecological Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Malaria remains a major global health concern, causing substantial morbidity and mortality, especially in tropical and subtropical regions with limited healthcare resources. Climatic conditions and extreme weather events are increasingly recognized as critical determinants of malaria transmission, yet their relative contributions remain poorly quantified. This study applied machine learning (ML) and explainable AI (XAI) to identify the key climatic and extreme weather determinants of malaria, assess their relative importance, and predict incidence. METHODS: Malaria incide

Long-term projections of the impacts of warming temperatures on Zika and dengue risk in four Brazilian cities using a temperature-dependent basic reproduction number.

For vector-borne diseases the basic reproduction number [Formula: see text], a measure of a disease's epidemic potential, is highly temperature-dependent. Recent work characterizing these temperature dependencies has highlighted how climate change may impact geographic disease spread. We extend this prior work by examining how newly emerging diseases, like Zika, will be impacted by specific future climate change scenarios in four diverse regions of Brazil, a country that has been profoundly impacted by Zika. We estimated a [Formula: see text], derived from a compartmental transmission model, c

Cost-effectiveness analysis of extensive green roofs for urban stormwater control in response to future climate change scenarios.

Green roof, as a popular low impact development practice, has become important to mitigate adverse impacts of future climate change on urban stormwater. However, there is limited information regarding assessment of the effectiveness of green roofs in response to uncertain future climate change challenges. In this study, the validated model was used to simulate the reduction performance of green roofs on urban catchment outflow and assess their cost-effectiveness in response to design storms under climate change scenarios. Results showed that the median runoff volume of urban catchments increas

Combining species distribution models and big datasets may provide finer assessments of snakebite impacts.

BACKGROUND: Snakebite is a major poverty-related neglected tropical disease. An integrated scientific approach is needed to understand the dynamics of this important health issue. Our objective was to estimate snakebite occurrence in a tropical area by using a blend of ecological modelling and robust statistical analysis. METHODS: The present study used climatic, environmental, and human population density data to determine the area with snakebite occurrence-probability for the first time in Bangladesh. We also analysed a large, 16-year dataset of hospitalized snakebite cases to reveal the ep

Spatially explicit assessment of multihazard exposure in the Zagros forests of Iran: the role of canopy structure in the exposure component of forest vulnerability.

Mountain forests face increasing threats from interacting climatic, environmental, and socioecological stressors, yet most vulnerability assessments still use single-hazard approaches that overlook cumulative environmental risk. This limitation is especially important in Iran's Zagros forests, where climate change and human pressures are accelerating ecological consequences. We developed a spatially explicit multihazard exposure framework to quantify forest exposure to multiple environmental stressors and assess its relationship with canopy-cover structure. Nine environmental and socioecologic

Climate Impact of Direct and Indirect N2O Emissions from the Ammonia Marine Fuel Value Chain.

Ammonia (NH3) emerges as a near-zero-carbon shipping fuel, but its value chain can emit noncarbon greenhouse gases (GHGs) like nitrous oxide (N2O) and pollutants, such as NH3 and nitrogen oxides (NOx). N2O, with 273 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide (CO2), is also indirectly emitted through transformations of reactive nitrogen (Nr) species, like NH3 and NOx, in natural environments. Understanding ammonia's climate impact is crucial for evaluating its efficacy as a fossil fuel alternative. We present a functional model to quantify the climate impact of renewable-based (e-ammo

The modification effect of the diurnal temperature range on the exposure-response relationship between temperature and pediatric hand, foot and mouth disease.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests that the diurnal temperature range (DTR) could modify the temperature-disease relationship for those environmentally-related infectious diseases. However, there is a lack of evidence on the hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). In this study, we thoroughly examined this hypothesis via a nationwide study. METHOD: We collected the daily time series of HFMD cases and meteorological factors of 143 cities in mainland China from 2009 to 2014. For each city, we calculated the arithmetic average of the meteorological factors as a proxy for the climatic differences

Modelling the association of rainfall and temperature with malaria incidence in Adamawa State, Nigeria.

Malaria transmission in Adamawa State is strongly driven by climatic conditions, particularly rainfall and temperature, which influence Anopheles mosquito breeding, survival, and parasite development. This study investigates the climate malaria relationship using monthly data from January 2015 to April 2024 and applies time series methods to characterize temporal patterns and generate forecasts. Using the Box Jenkins ARIMA framework with model selection informed by AIC and BIC, and performance evaluated through RMSE, MAE, and MAPE, the [Formula: see text] model emerged as the best fitting spec

Community Participation as a Pathway to Strengthen National Precipitation Isotope Products in New Zealand.

Accurate environmental and climate modelling depends on the availability of large observational datasets, yet the generation of such data is often costly and logistically challenging for individual research groups. This limitation is particularly acute in New Zealand, where geographic isolation, complex topography, and strong climatic gradients require dense observational networks for robust national and regional scale modelling. Here we present New Zealand's national precipitation isotope database, compiled through a community data-collection effort. The database integrates historical and con

Nature-based Solutions as Building Blocks for coastal flood risk reduction: a model-based ecosystem service assessment.

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are increasingly recognized as effective measures for mitigating flood risks and enhancing climate change adaptation. However, evaluating their efficacy in delivering flood risk reduction ecosystem service (FRR-ESS) is usually limited by reliance on qualitative, expert-based "quick-scan" scoring methods. While already challenging for present-day evaluations, this limitation becomes even more significant when addressing future climate scenarios, introducing deep uncertainties in the evaluation. The present study introduces a model-based framework to quantify FRR-ESS

The Effect of Climate Change and the Snail-Schistosome Cycle in Transmission and Bio-Control of Schistosomiasis in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In the next century, global warming, due to changes in climatic factors, is expected to have an enormous influence on the interactions between pathogens and their hosts. Over the years, the rate at which vector-borne diseases and their transmission dynamics modify and develop has been shown to be highly dependent to a certain extent on changes in temperature and geographical distribution. Schistosomiasis has been recognized as a tropical and neglected vector-borne disease whose rate of infection has been predicted to be elevated worldwide, especially in sub-Saharan Africa; the region currently

Comparative Distribution Projections of Hydrophilic and Xerophytic Invasive Species in Turkey Under CMIP6 Climate Scenarios.

Climate change imposes varying pressures on the potential distribution of invasive alien plant species, depending on their specific ecological strategies and physiological tolerances. In this study, the projected potential ranges within Turkey of the hydrophilic Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) and the markedly xerophytic Solanum elaeagnifolium (silverleaf nightshade) were compared under several CMIP6 climate scenarios: SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5. Species distribution models were produced using an ensemble modelling framework combining Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt), Random Forest (RF) and

Predicting climate-driven urban rat release and associated risks across climate zones.

Urban rat populations are widely assumed to increase under climate change, largely due to recent studies. This narrative is often extended to cities worldwide, irrespective of their local climate. Yet, this oversimplification obscures complex ecological and social processes that shape commensal rat dynamics. Here, we synthesize evidence across rodent ecology, epidemiology, urbanization, and human behavior to propose a multi‑dimensional framework for urban rat‑release: a climate‑mediated relaxation of seasonal constraints that reduces winter burrow confinement and increases above‑ground activit

Heat stress variation exerts a more pronounced effect than vapor pressure deficit on maize yield in Northeast China.

Northeast China (NEC) stands as one of the dominant maize-growing regions in China, playing a pivotal role in national food security. Maize is highly susceptible to inter-annual variations in both mean and extreme climate conditions. Identifying the most relevant climate variables that constrain maize yield is crucial for designing tailored management strategies for rainfed maize production in vulnerable environments. Here we compiled databases encompassing long-term observed maize phenology, yield, and weather data from agro-meteorological experimental stations in NEC spanning the period 1981
