Your pain or mine? Common and distinct neural systems supporting the perception of pain in self and other.

Humans possess a remarkable capacity to understand the suffering of others. Cognitive neuroscience theories of empathy suggest that this capacity is supported by 'shared representations' of self and other. Consistent with this notion, a number of studies have found that perceiving others in pain and experiencing pain oneself recruit overlapping neural systems. Perception of pain in each of these conditions, however, may also cause unique patterns of activation, that may reveal more about the processing steps involved in each type of pain. To address this issue, we examined neural activity whil…

Effect of high-dose simvastatin on cognitive, neuropsychiatric, and health-related quality-of-life measures in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis: secondary analyses from the MS-STAT randomised, placebo-controlled trial.

BackgroundIn the 24-month MS-STAT phase 2 trial, we showed that high-dose simvastatin significantly reduced the annualised rate of whole brain atrophy in patients with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS). We now describe the results of the MS-STAT cognitive substudy, in which we investigated the treatment effect on cognitive, neuropsychiatric, and health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) outcome measures.MethodsWe did a secondary analysis of MS-STAT, a 24-month, double-blind, controlled trial of patients with SPMS done at three neuroscience centres in the UK between Jan 28, 2008, and

Impact of integrated yoga therapy on cognitive impairment and cardiac dysfunction in relation to quality of life in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy: Study protocol for a two-arm randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) and cardiac dysfunction (CRCD) are common adverse effects seen in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Even though these effects significantly influence daily functioning and overall quality of life, effective strategies to avoid and/or mitigate these adverse effects remain elusive. Yoga as a Mind-body intervention has been used increasingly by cancer patients and has undergone empirical investigations as a potential intervention for patients with cancer. Furthermore, yoga is associated with improved cognition and cardiac

Mapping and modulating brain dynamics in aging and neurodegeneration with electroencephalography and integrated neurotechnologies in primates.

Non-human primates (NHPs) provide an essential translational platform for investigating neural mechanisms underlying brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Their neuroanatomical organization, cortical complexity, and cognitive capacities share close parallels with those of humans, enabling a degree of experimental precision that rodent models cannot achieve. Electroencephalography (EEG) offers a non-invasive method for monitoring neuronal population activity with high temporal resolution, capturing oscillatory patterns and connectivity changes that emerge over the course of aging and in p

A narrative review on the neurobiology of lucid dreaming: mechanisms and therapeutic potential.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Lucid dreaming (LD), which involves being aware of and controlling one's dreams, is of particular interest in the study of consciousness and has potential therapeutic applications. In this narrative review, we highlight the neurobiological aspects of LD, specifically its mechanisms associated with the activation of prefrontal and parietal areas, increased gamma oscillations, and the influence of cholinergic and dopaminergic signaling, primarily during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate human data on brain mechanisms and clinical effects, synthesizing the neurob

Unmasking concealed depression through the digital leakage effect: A narrative review and theoretical framework with implications for asian populations.

BACKGROUND: A persistent paradox haunts modern psychiatric epidemiology: despite decades of investment in mental health screening, suicide rates have not declined appreciably, with up to 60% of suicide decedents denying suicidal ideation during their final clinical encounter. Individuals with concealed depression-particularly in East and Southeast Asian populations where cultural norms of face (mianzi), emotional restraint, and somatization discourage disclosure-systematically evade detection by standard self-report instruments such as the PHQ-9. OBJECTIVES: This narrative review introduces t

Reducing opioid use for chronic non-cancer pain in primary care using an evidence-based, theory-informed, multistrategic, multistakeholder approach: a single-arm time series with segmented regression.

BACKGROUND: Many countries have high opioid use among people with chronic non-cancer pain. Knowledge about effective interventions that could be implemented at scale is limited. We designed a national intervention that included audit and feedback, deprescribing guidance, information on catastrophising assessment, pain neuroscience education and a cognitive tool for use by patients with their healthcare providers. METHOD: We used a single-arm time series with segmented regression to assess rates of people using opioids before (January 2015 to September 2017), at the time of (October 2017) and

Decoding Digital Visual Stimulation From Neural Manifold With Fuzzy Leaning on Cortical Oscillatory Dynamics.

A crucial point in neuroscience is how to correctly decode cognitive information from brain dynamics for motion control and neural rehabilitation. However, due to the instability and high dimensions of electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings, it is difficult to directly obtain information from original data. Thus, in this work, we design visual experiments and propose a novel decoding method based on the neural manifold of cortical activity to find critical visual information. First, we studied four major frequency bands divided from EEG and found that the responses of the EEG alpha band (8-15 H

Tourette Syndrome and Chronic Tic Disorders: The Clinical Spectrum Beyond Tics.

The clinical surveillance and active management of Tourette syndrome (TS) and other primary chronic tic disorders cannot be limited to tics, as these patients manifest a spectrum of sensory-, behavioral-, cognitive-, and sleep-related problems that have a major impact on their functioning and quality of life, influencing enormously clinical decision making on a routine basis. The sensory phenomena of primary tic disorders consist of premonitory urges and heightened sensitivity to external somatosensory and interoceptive stimuli. Recent evidence suggests that raised interoceptive awareness may

Selective imitation impairments differentially interact with language processing.

Whether motor and linguistic representations of actions share common neural structures has recently been the focus of an animated debate in cognitive neuroscience. Group studies with brain-damaged patients reported association patterns of praxic and linguistic deficits whereas single case studies documented double dissociations between the correct execution of gestures and their comprehension in verbal contexts. When the relationship between language and imitation was investigated, each ability was analysed as a unique process without distinguishing between possible subprocesses. However, rece…

Overview of experimental and conventional pharmacological approaches in the treatment of sleep and wake disorders.

The fundamental purpose of sleep remains one of the most compelling questions yet to be answered in the area of neuroscience, if not all of biology. A pervasive behavior among members of the animal kingdom, the functional necessity of engaging regularly in sleep is best demonstrated by showing that failing to do so leads to a broad repertoire of pathological outcomes including cognitive, immunological, hormonal, and metabolic outcomes, among others. Indeed, an absolute requirement for sleep has been shown in studies that have demonstrated that continuous total deprivation of sleep for as short

Towards a new model of understanding - The triple network, psychopathology and the structure of the mind.

With progress in neurosciences, neuroimaging and brain stimulation techniques, mental illnesses are now being seen as development anomalies at the molecular-structural level of synapses, resulting in abnormal cross wiring in areas responsible for complex cognitive and emotional processing. These include the multimodal association cortices situated in the prefrontal lobes, the insula in the temporal lobes, midline cortical structures, and their connections to the thalamus, amygdala and the basal ganglia. Three key networks have been identified which are considered the brain hubs for complex per

The role of exercise in enhancing brain and cerebrovascular health via the bone-brain axis: implications for surgical and clinical interventions.

UNLABELLED: The bone–brain axis constitutes an interactive bidirectional signaling network integrating skeletal, neural, and muscular systems, serving critical functions across both normal physiological operations and disease mechanisms. Exercise, a non-pharmacological intervention, significantly influences this axis by enhancing bone-derived factors like osteocalcin, which in turn affect cognitive function, neuroplasticity, and systemic metabolism. This review delves into the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the bone–brain axis, with a particular focus on exercise-induced pathways

Harmonizing the stimulation dose of focal transcranial direct current stimulation across target sites.

Focal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) using center-surround electrode montages enables region-specific cortical targeting, and holds promise for both cognitive neuroscience and clinical interventions. However, systematic examinations of dose-response relationships and their regional differences are lacking, hampering informed selections of suited stimulation parameters. In this preparatory methodological study, we present a modeling-based framework to support harmonized empirical dose-response studies of focal tDCS across different target areas. It covers three steps: Determinin…

Carrying the aftermath: forensic trauma as a predictable occupational injury in a lifecycle systems framework.

Forensic practitioners routinely engage with the aftermath of violence rather than the moment of threat, requiring prolonged, detail-focused immersion in traumatic material. An expanding empirical literature across crime scene investigation, medicolegal death investigation, digital forensics, and forensic laboratories demonstrates elevated levels of secondary traumatic stress, burnout, cognitive disruption, and organisational strain within forensic science populations. These outcomes are shaped not only by exposure, but by a multi-dimensional occupational stressor profile-including workload in

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation of prefrontal cortex on risk-taking behavior.

AIM: Recent cognitive neuroscience research shows that noninvasive brain stimulation can modify a wide range of behaviors in healthy people. Such regulation effects on human behaviors provide new insights into the neurobiology of cognitive processes and establish causal brain-behavior relations. Here, we aimed to examine the effects of transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) of the prefrontal cortex on risk-taking. METHODS: We performed a systematic search on the PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases with appropriate keywords for original studies reporting the use of TES to modulat…

Modeling attention and binding in the brain through bidirectional recurrent gating.

Attention is a cornerstone of cognition and neural computation, enabling the brain to select relevant information, bind features into coherent objects, and guide behavior. However, we currently lack a unifying computational model that connects the diverse phenomena of attention, from spatial and feature-based selection to object-based binding, within a single, neurally plausible computational framework. Here, we propose a bidirectional recurrent gating mechanism integrated into a principled architecture of the ventral visual stream. In this architecture, feedforward pathways extract visual fea

Review: Impact of food, gut-brain signals and metabolic status on brain activity in the pig model: 10 years of nutrition research using in vivo brain imaging.

The purpose of this review is to offer a panorama on 10 years of nutrition research using in vivo brain imaging in the pig model. First, we will review some work describing the brain responses to food signals, including basic tastants such as sweet and bitter at both oral and visceral levels, as well as conditioned preferred and aversive flavours. Second, we will have a look at the impact of weight gain and obesity on brain metabolism and functional responses, drawing the parallel with obese human patients. Third, we will evoke the concept of the developmental origins of health and diseases, a

Application of eye trackers for understanding mental disorders: Cases for schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder.

Studies of eye movement have become an essential tool of basic neuroscience research. Measures of eye movement have been applied to higher brain functions such as cognition, social behavior, and higher-level decision-making. With the development of eye trackers, a growing body of research has described eye movements in relation to mental disorders, reporting that the basic oculomotor properties of patients with mental disorders differ from those of healthy controls. Using discrimination analysis, several independent research groups have used eye movements to differentiate patients with schizop
