A significant body of evidence has accumulated suggesting that individual variation in intellectual ability, whether assessed directly by in … e, including reduced metabolic efficiency, may facilitate the development of AD neuropathology. The cognitive reserve hypothesis, the most widely accepted account of the intelligence-AD association, is reviewed in the context of this larger literature.

The postconcussion syndrome is a term invoked to describe a constellation of cognitive (decreased memory and concentration), emotional (increased irritability and nervousness or anxiety), and physical (increased headaches and dizziness) changes that are commonly reported following minor or severe head injuries. The first section presents the development and validation of the Postconcussion Syndrome Checklist. The second section describes the daily changes in symptom reports as a function of daily stress levels. A population of head-injured subjects and controls monitored postconcussion symptom

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder characterized by chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), sleep fragmentation, and upper-airway collapse. Beyond respiratory issues, OSA significantly impacts the central nervous system, increasing the risk for mild cognitive impairment and dementia. This review synthesizes the dual nature of CIH-induced molecular cascades, describing pathways driving neurodegeneration, such as SUMOylation dysregulation, toll-like receptor signaling, and inflammasome overactivation (largely characterized in experimental and animal CIH models), and those activating

Patients with early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD) are reported to be different from those with late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) in t … nts with LOAD, which is consistent with neuropsychological results. Our findings suggested that the cognitive reserve theory might be applicable to explain different decline rates of the volumes of the basal ganglia and thalamus according to onset age.

The incidence and prevalence of alcoholism in the elderly population are tendentially underestimated. There are some reasons for this fact. The pathway to the diagnosis of alcoholism may be considerably compromised in the often comorbid or multimorbid patient. To live up to an advanced age seems to be a good argument against chronic substance abuse. Elderly people and their relatives are often still more reluctant to report about socially stigmatizing disorders. On top of that, the amount of social control is reduced after the end of employment and upon entering retirement. Yet, if alcohol-wit

Although there is a consensus about age-related impairments in true memory, the relationship between aging and false memory remains less clear. Both the fuzzy-trace theory and the activation-monitoring theory postulate possible effects of cognitive aging on the processes of encoding, consolidation, and retrieval. Yet, quantitative analyses of cognitive aging, both healthy (younger vs. older adults) and pathological (older adults vs. mild cognitive impairment/Alzheimer's disease), on false memory have not been conducted. We meta-analyzed 150 articles with 414 independent effect sizes and found

OBJECTIVE: Subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs) are common in Parkinson's disease (PD), yet the relationship among nonmotor symptoms remains understudied in early-stage, treatment-naïve populations. We examined interrelationships among SCCs, mood symptoms, and cognition in early-stage, treatment-naïve PD. We hypothesized that SCCs would relate to executive functioning and processing speed, and these relationships would be moderated by mood.
METHOD: Cross-sectional baseline data analyzed 250 individuals (169 men, 81 women; aged 50-84 years) in the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological norms serve to identify cognitive impairment and monitor neurodegenerative disease progression. However, longitudinal data are limited, and conventional approaches do not account for biomarkers to exclude underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology, reducing sensitivity to detect subtle cognitive decline in preclinical AD. To address these limitations, this research provides robust longitudinal neuropsychological norms derived from Spanish individuals with nonpathological levels of AD biomarkers.

OBJECTIVE: The negative consequences of childhood maltreatment have been documented across multiple domains, including cognitive functioning in midlife. This study examined the impact of childhood maltreatment on cognitive functioning into late midlife, changes over time, and the extent to which cognitive change over time predicted functional impairment.
METHOD: We use data from a prospective cohort design study in which individuals with documented histories of childhood maltreatment (ages 0-11 years) and demographically matched controls without those histories were interviewed over five stud

Major amendments in neonatal care have been introduced in recent decades. It is important to understand whether these amendments improved the cognitive sequelae of preterm children. Through a large-scale meta-analysis, we explored the association between prematurity-related complications, neonatal care quality, and cognitive development from birth until 7 years. MEDLINE, APA PsycInfo, and EBSCO were searched. Peer-reviewed studies published between 1970 and 2022 using standardized tests were included. We evaluated differences between preterm and full-term children in focal developmental domain

Empathy is regarded as dynamic risk factor of child sexual offending. However, empathy research in the context of child sexual abuse suffers from various problems. First, prior studies failed to differentiate between pedophilic and nonpedophilic sexual offenders. Second, there is no distinction made between cognitive and affective empathy. Third, cognitive and affective empathy toward emotional states of specific age groups (children and adults) has not been adequately addressed. The current study tackles these shortcomings investigating offending and nonoffending pedophiles and multiple aspec

Psycho-affective states or traits such as stress, depression, anxiety and neuroticism are known to affect sleep, cognition and mental health and well-being in aging populations and to be associated with increased risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Mental training for stress reduction and emotional and attentional regulation through meditation practice might help reduce these adverse factors. So far, studies on the impact of meditation practice on brain and cognition in aging are scarce and have limitations but the findings are encouraging, showing a positive effect of meditation training on co

We quantified the extent to which the association between education and fast walking speed (FWS) is explained by 17 mediators (cardiovascular risk factors/diseases, comorbidities, health behaviors, socioprofessional characteristics, cognition), and examined whether mediators interact with education, in favor of a reserve hypothesis. Cross-sectional analyses are based on Constances (a population-based study of French adults 45-69 years). Three-meter FWS was measured using photoelectric cells. Education was categorized as lower vs higher. After multiple imputation of missing values, we used coun

Inorganic nitrate plays a crucial role in the regulation of cerebral blood flow and neurotransmission through its conversion to nitric oxide (NO). Astrocytes are star-shaped glial cells and contribute to maintain the blood-brain barrier integrity, regulate neuronal metabolism, support synaptic plasticity and facilitate neurovascular coupling. Inorganic nitrate widely distributed through all organs, with main reservoirs in skeletomuscular and skin tissues. These reserves are easily accessible via bloodstream and processed into nitrite and NO mainly in liver. Processing nitrate/nitrite into NO a

IMPORTANCE: Even within individuals who are amyloid positive, clinical symptoms can be impacted by Alzheimer pathology, other pathologic proteins, and cognitive reserve or resilience. Understanding how each of these factors contributes to a patient's clinical presentation is crucial for prognosis and treatment decisions in the era of disease-modifying therapies.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate tau-clinical mismatch as a means to identify those more likely to harbor copathology and/or exhibit resilience to Alzheimer pathology.

Conventional human movement science often considers body parts and processes separately as belonging to complementary but distinct domains (motor control, cognition). We break with this tradition by exploring how mechanical and cognitive demands jointly shape whole-body functional coordination in healthy young adults. Forty-eight participants performed postural control tasks under four conditions: stable surface without cognitive load, stable surface with the Trail Making Test (TMT) Part A, wobble board without TMT and wobble board with TMT. Whole-body coordination networks were derived from m

BACKGROUND: The brain-heart axis is central to vascular health, yet no imaging biomarkers capture integrated dysfunction across neural and coronary microvascular networks. Although coronary microvascular dysfunction links to cognitive decline, neural correlates connecting cerebral efficiency with coronary physiology remain unclear.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the Unified Structural and Functional Connectivity (USFC)-a multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) "traffic map" of brain network efficiency-predicts coronary endothelial function and cognition in women with ischemia and no obs
