INTRODUCTION: Mesenteric hematoma is a rare condition caused by bleeding localized in the mesenteric vascular tree. This is a first report of spontaneous mesenteric hematoma caused by rivaroxaban.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: The patient was a 71-year-old man who had taken rivaroxaban for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. He had experienced abdominal pain and diarrhea for the prior 3 days. He had little melena and was referred to our institute. He presented with hypotension on arrival. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a 10 cm mass in the mesentery of the sigmoid colon with extravasation. Active bleed

Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare anatomic anomaly in which organs in the chest and abdomen exist in a mirror image reversal of their normal positions. SIT can complicate surgical procedures, and few reports have described laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer in patients with SIT. Here, we report a case of successful laparoscopic surgery in a patient with SIT and sigmoid colon cancer. Laparoscopic sigmoidectomy involved colonic mobilization with high ligation of the inferior mesenteric vessels and complete mesocolic excision. The operating surgeon stood on the patient's left side, o

INTRODUCTION: A cholecystocolonic fistula (CCF) is a late complication following repeated episodes of chronic inflammation of the gallbladder in contact with the hepatic flexure, and it might cause a biliary ileus in the colon, causing an intestinal obstruction, and if left untreated, a life threatening disease.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: a 49-year-old female patient presented with abdominal pain and bowel obstruction due to a gallstone impaction on the sigmoid colon as consequence of a cholecystocolonic fistula. An enterolithotomy was performed, and the patient evolved favorably. She was discharg

BACKGROUND: To report our experience with solo-surgeon, single-port laparoscopic anterior resection (solo SPAR) for sigmoid colon cancer.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from sigmoid colon cancer patients who underwent anterior resections (ARs) using the single-port, solo surgery technique (n = 31) or the conventional single-port laparoscopic technique (n = 45), between January 2011 and July 2016, were retrospectively analyzed. In the solo surgeries, making the transumbilical incision into the peritoneal cavity was facilitated through the use of a self-retaining retractor system. After establishi

INTRODUCTION: Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), a constituent of the gut microbiota, can be associated with both colonic lesions and endocarditis. Since this microorganism is one of the endocarditis etiological agents, there is a need for greater study in regard to the association with endocarditis and colonic lesions.
CASE PRESENTATION: This is the case description of a 53-year-old man with history of prolapse of the anterior mitral valve leaflet who was diagnosed with endocarditis by E. faecalis and treated with ampicillin and gentamicin. Upon investigation by colonoscopy, he was found t

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasound examinations during pregnancy are routine procedures used to detect fetal congenital malformations. Ultrasound monitoring of sigmoid colon mesenterial development could be useful for early detection of subjects at risk of sigmoid colon volvulus.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our paper was to assess the sigmoid colon length, and sigmoid colon mesentery width and height in the late fetal period, and, using the results, to estimate the surface area of the mesocolon (in mm2) in living fetuses. Moreover, we attempted to repeat some of these measurements in living fetuses using ult

OBJECTIVE: The present report aimed to present a unique case of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) presenting features of unilateral ureteral and sigmoid colon obstruction. RPF is a rare disorder with unclear etiology.
CASE REPORT: A 43-year-old female had a 10-day history of lower right abdominal and lumbar pain. Gynecological examination, ultrasound, and computed tomography (CT) were all suggestive of right ovarian tumor. An enhanced CT showed right-sided hydronephrosis. The patient was diagnosed as having ovarian cancer. Ten days after hospitalization, a right intraureteral stent wi

BACKGROUND: A sarcoid reaction is a phenomenon characterized by histologically proven granulomatous lesions without evidence of sarcoidosis. This pathology is a benign tumor itself, but several reports have described sarcoid reactions accompanying malignant tumors. Sarcoid reactions occur in various cancers, such as skin, lung, ovary, stomach, and breast cancers. However, only a few published reports have described sarcoid reactions in patients with colorectal cancer.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 76-year-old woman underwent laparoscopic sigmoidectomy for sigmoid colon cancer. The postoperative follow

INTRODUCTION: In relation to all inguinal hernias, large irreducible scrotal hernias are quite rare, while such hernias containing colon tumors in the sac have so far been described in fewer than 30 cases.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 61-year-old patient was admitted for a planned surgery because of a large irreducible left-sided scrotal hernia. Intraoperatively, a large tumor of the sigmoid colon was found in the hernial sac. In a histopathological examination it was diagnosed as adenocarcinoma. A palliative operation was performed and he was referred to further systemic and palliative treatment

A 74-year-old woman who developed schwannoma of the sigmoid colon was referred to our hospital for colonography to determine the cause of her stool occult blood. Colonoscopy revealed a submucosal tumor, which measured 3 cm in diameter, in the sigmoid colon. Endoscopic ultrasonography revealed a low echoic, homogeneous and demarcated submucosal tumor that continued into the fourth layer of the colonic wall. Gastrointestinal stromal, myogenic or neurogenic tumor was suspected, and thus, laparoscopic sigmoidectomy was carried out. We used two ports during the operation, a SILS Port in the umbilic

Laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer has the advantage of being less invasive and delivering better cosmetic appearance. Although single-incision laparoscopic surgery produces excellent cosmetic results, it is considered very difficult to perform. We performed reduced port surgery (single-incision plus one or 2 ports) on 42 patients in our institute. The operation time, number of dissected lymph nodes, morbidity rates, and length of hospital stay after the operation were not inferior to those in conventional laparoscopic surgery. The estimated blood loss in reduced port surgery was less

Primary aortoenteric fistula (PAEF) is a rare but catastrophic cause of massive gastrointestinal bleeding. Diagnosis of PAEF is difficult to make and is frequently delayed without strong clinical suspicion. Timely surgical intervention is essential for patient's survival. We report on a case of an 86-year-old woman with no history of abdominal surgery, who presented with abdominal pain. Initially, computed tomography scan showed an intra-abdominal abscess, located anterior to the aortic bifurcation. However, she was discharged without treatment because of spontaneous improvement on a follow-up

BACKGROUND: The intrauterine device (IUD) is one of the most effective contraceptive methods available today. However, IUDs can cause some serious complications, such as bleeding, uterine perforation, and bowel perforation. Migration into bowel is a rare but serious complication that requires surgical attention.
CASE: A 35-year-old multiparous female was diagnosed with IUD migration into the abdominal cavity. Upon diagnostic laparoscopy by gynecologic surgeons, sigmoid colon penetration by the IUD was strongly suspected. After confirmation of the penetration by abdominal computed tomography s

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical effect of laparoscopic vaginoplasty using pedicled ileal and sigmoid colon segment.
METHODS: From January 2004 to December 2009, 105 cases undergoing laparoscope-assisted vaginoplasty using a vascularized pedicled intestinal flap were studied retrospectively. Operation time, blood loss in operating, bowel movement after operation, postoperation hospital duration, side effect, and artificial vagina were compared between two surgical management.
RESULTS: The vaginoplasty were preformed successfully in all 105 cases. There were 48 patients treated by aparoscope-

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, and typically present as discrete well-circumscribed but non-encapsulated tumor masses. In this report, we describe a case of colonic perforation caused by an unusual form of GIST. A 72-year-old Japanese woman presented to the emergency department with acute abdominal pain. Under the provisional diagnosis of sigmoid colon perforation, a laparoscopic sigmoidectomy was performed. Although the tumor mass was undetectable during the preoperative examination, a spindle cell lesion with a

The strangulated inguinal hernia is one of the most common emergencies in surgery. Although the diagnosis is usually made by physical examination, the content of the hernia sac and the extent of the following operation may vary. We present an extremely rare case of a strangulated right inguinal hernia containing the sigmoid colon and review the relevant literature.

We describe here a 62-year-old woman who presented with a perivascular epithelioid cell tumor arising in the sigmoid colon. Computed tomography revealed a 5-cm-sized intraluminal fungating mass. Histologically, the tumor consisted of plump, epithelioid cells with abundant clear-to-lightly eosinophilic cytoplasm and round nuclei, arranged in an alveolar or trabecular pattern. The tumor cells were strongly positive for HMB-45 and TFE3, but negative for vimentin, cytokeratin, smooth muscle actin, S100 protein, CD117, CD34, synaptophysin, chromogranin, CD10, hepatocyte antigen, CD1a, and desmin.
