BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies have shown a pattern of rare copy number variations and single nucleotide polymorphisms in patients with common variable immunodeficiency disorder (CVID), which was recognizable by a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm. Cases of chronic or prolonged hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections have been described in solid organ transplant recipients, HIV infected patients and in patients with malignancies or idiopathic CD4(+) T lymphopenia. INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the most common infectious pathogens in common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). Both innate and adaptive immune response appears to play a role in defense against S. pneumoniae. In mice, it has been established that TLR2 and macrophages-derived cytokines (IL-6, TNF-alpha) play a crucial role in defense against S. pneumoniae. Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is a vector-borne zoonosis endemic in Southern Italy whose usual clinical features include fever, splenomegaly, pancytopenia and hypergammaglobulinemia. The clinical and biochemical picture may be misleading in patients with immunodeficiency diseases hampering the diagnosis.
