Physiotherapist- and peer-led physical activity counseling for people with spinal cord injury: a cross-sectional study of barriers and facilitators to implementation in the rehabilitation to community transition.

INTRODUCTION: A large decrease in physical activity (PA) is typically observed among people with spinal cord injury (SCI) upon discharge from in-hospital rehabilitation. Physiotherapists and SCI peers are well-positioned to intervene at this critical timepoint; however, the implementation of coordinated PA interventions between these two groups have yet to be studied. PURPOSE: To identify barriers and facilitators that affect the implementation of coordinated PA counseling among physiotherapists and SCI peers during the transition from in-hospital rehabilitation to the community. METHODS: Sem

Laboratory maintenance and care of Rhodnius prolixus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) and other Triatominae.

Triatomines (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) are hematophagous insects that transmit Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent for Chagas disease, to humans and other mammals. As medically important vectors, species such as Rhodnius prolixus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) have long been used as a model organism for physiological studies. Laboratory rearing of triatomines is needed to support vector and parasite research. Many environmental conditions, such as suitable housing containers, light source and duration, temperature, humidity, and density, must be addressed when adapting triatomines from a natural ha

Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM) Position Statement: increase access to mental health services due to COVID-19-related parent and family stress.

COVID-19 has caused drastic increases in family stress contributing to deleterious social and emotional ramifications. Before COVID-19, millions of Americans lacked access to mental health resources, and now in the midst of a global pandemic, resources are more limited in times of greater need. In March 2020, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act provided funding for mental health reforms; yet many barriers remained to receiving sufficient care. In February 2021, the Society of Behavioral Medicine recommended federal legislators expand Community Behavioral Healthcare C

Community-Level Social Determinants and Children's School Readiness.

The current study examined links between social determinants across communities and school readiness of children attending kindergarten in each community, in literacy, math, self-regulation, and social skills. Four types of social determinants were explored: socioeconomic, crime/violence, health and well-being, and access to resources. Data came from the Oregon Kindergarten Assessment, with 40,652 entering kindergarteners attending 706 schools in the fall of 2014. The 706 schools were nested within 36 counties. Variables representing social determinants were drawn from a variety of publicly av

Prevalence and correlates of psychotic like experiences in a nationally representative community sample of adolescents in Ireland.

Adolescent psychotic like experiences (PLEs) are an important area of research, yet only a small number of community surveys have investigated their psychosocial correlates. This study presents the prevalence and correlates of three types of PLEs in a nationally representative community sample of 12-19 year olds in Ireland (N=5910). Correlates are considered across five domains: demographic, stressful life experiences, emotional/behavioral problems, substance use, and personal resources. Auditory hallucinations were reported by 13.7% of participants, 10.4% reported visual hallucinations and 13

Delivering vaccines to the people who need them most.

Thanks to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), the Vaccine Fund and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the global health community has made enormous progress in providing already existing vaccines to developing countries. However, there still exists a gap to develop vaccines for which there is no market in the Western world, owing to low economic incentives for the private sector to justify the investments necessary for vaccine development. In many cases, industry has the technologies, but lacks the impetus to direct resources to develop these vaccine products. The prese

Sudden death and the competitive athlete: perspectives on preparticipation screening studies.

Sudden death in healthy athletes is uncommon but, when it occurs, the primary mechanism is cardiovascular. The major cause of sudden death in the young athlete is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or related conditions characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy, aortic rupture due to cystic medial necrosis and congenital coronary artery abnormalities. In the middle-aged or older athlete, coronary artery disease is the most significant cause of sudden death. Noninvasive screening procedures are currently available that can detect most subjects at risk of sudden death. However, although some potent

Person-environment fit in aging in place: A digital support layer and inequalities in environmental satisfaction among urban empty-nest older adults in China.

Population aging and increasing intergenerational residential separation have made aging in place increasingly dependent on how older adults perceive the fit between themselves and their everyday living environments. Drawing on person-environment fit theory, this study situates smart technology within the broader environmental system and defines it as a distinct, independently measurable digital support layer. Using an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design, we examined environmental satisfaction among urban empty-nest older adults in China and identified social, functional, and contextua

Invisible in the Storm: Climate Change and the Lived Realities of Transmasculine People in India.

Climate change is increasingly recognized as a public health issue that exacerbates existing social and structural inequities. While growing attention has been paid to gendered impacts of climate-related hazards, transgender populations remain largely absent from climate research, policy, and practice, especially in low- and middle-income country contexts. This article introduces Invisible in the Storm: Climate Change and the Lived Realities of Transmasculine People in India, a community-led and produced health promotion resource developed by Transmen Collective, India's first national organiz

Perceptions of air pollution and health communication for people with asthma among Australia's Arabic-speaking communities.

Air pollution is a major public health risk factor globally and a significant threat to people with respiratory conditions. People with asthma, and particularly those from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, are disproportionally affected and have less capacity to protect themselves from air pollution. There is a critical lack of accessible resources and advice for people with asthma who are from CALD backgrounds. This qualitative study aimed to better understand Arabic-speaking Australians' perceptions of air quality, support their health literacy, and co-design resource

Dissemination and Implementation Approach to Increasing Access to Local Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Resources With Black Cisgender Women: Intervention Study With Vlogs Shared on Social Media.

BACKGROUND: Black cisgender women account for only 2% of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)-eligible people in the United States who use PrEP to prevent HIV. Owing to the low PrEP use, Black cisgender women continue to contract HIV more frequently than women from every other racial group. Intervention efforts that can bridge the link between knowing that PrEP prevents HIV and support with access to PrEP are necessary for Black cisgender women. OBJECTIVE: The purposes of the vlogs through the campaign were to share information about ways to prevent HIV using PrEP and fact-based education and prov
