Long-Term Organic Amendment Systems Are Associated with Pore-Aggregate Structure, Root Traits, and Labile Organic Carbon Allocation in a Brown Soil.

Organic amendments can alter soil structure, root development, and carbon cycling, yet their coordinated effects remain unclear. Based on a long-term field microplot experiment established in 2009, four amendment systems with equivalent annual N, P, and K inputs but differing in amendment properties and nominal annual organic-material C inputs were compared: maize straw with NPK (CS), pig manure compost with NPK (PMC), biochar with NPK (BIO), and biochar-based fertilizer (BF). After 15 years, dry-sieved aggregate distribution, CT-resolved air-filled pores (>30 μm), peanut root morphology, and

Microplastic and nanoplastic interactions with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in soils: a critical review of main findings and knowledge gaps.

Microplastics (MPs), nanoplastics (NPs), and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) can enter soils through biosolids, compost, landfill leachate, reclaimed-water irrigation, treated textiles, and industrial releases. However, whether plastic particles modify PFAS fate in terrestrial environments remains uncertain because most evidence derives from simplified laboratory conditions. This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework and identified 430 records from Scopus (n = 208) and Web of Science (n = 222). After screening, envi

Long-Term Biochar Application Enhances Peanut Yield by Delaying Leaf Senescence and Optimizing Nutrient Balance.

Premature leaf senescence during the late growth stage of Arachis hypogaea (peanut) reduces photosynthetic capacity and restricts pod filling, thereby limiting yield. Although biochar has been widely used for soil improvement due to its porous structure and stability, its long-term effects on sustaining photosynthetic performance and improving yield through nutrient regulation remain insufficiently understood. Based on a long-term field micro-plot experiment established in 2009, four fertilization treatments were evaluated: maize straw return + NPK (CS), pig manure compost + NPK (PMC), biochar

Degradation of Wheat Straw by Streptomyces thermocarboxydus XH2: Insights from Genomic and Transcriptomic Analyses.

Crop straw is an abundant lignocellulosic resource, but its efficient bioconversion is hindered by the recalcitrant structure of plant cell walls. This study integrated degradation phenotyping, enzyme activity assays, whole-genome analysis, and comparative transcriptomics to link the wheat-straw degradation performance of strain XH2 with its enzymatic and molecular responses. Strain XH2 was isolated from fully decomposed compost collected in Anhui Province, China, selected based on the formation of a distinct hydrolysis halo on CMC-Congo red agar, and deposited in the China Center for Type Cul

Widespread prevalence of plasmid-mediated blaCTX-M type extended-spectrum beta-lactamase Escherichia coli in backyard broiler production systems in the United States.

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) Escherichia coli (E. coli) is an emerging pathogen of high concern given its resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins. Broiler chicken, which is the number one consumed meat in the United States and worldwide, can be a reservoir of ESBL E. coli. Backyard poultry ownership is on the rise in the United States, yet there is little research investigating prevalence of ESBL E. coli in this setting. This study aims to identify the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance profiles (phenotypically and genotypically) of ESBL E. coli in some backyard and comm

Variation in the Chemical Sensitivity of Earthworms from Field Populations to Imidacloprid and Copper.

The chemical risk of pesticides for nontarget soil macroorganisms has mainly been assessed using the compost earthworm Eisenia fetida. However, E. fetida does not occur in agroecosystems, and it is generally less sensitive than other earthworm species. Thus, the extrapolation of its response to pesticides to other earthworm species may lead to uncertainties in risk assessment. Because toxicity data for other earthworms are scarce, we assessed the chemical sensitivity of five species (Allolobophora chlorotica, Aporrectodea caliginosa, Aporrectodea longa, Aporrectodea rosea, and Lumbricus rubell

A Rare Case of Pulmonary and Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis Due to Rhizopus spp. in a Child with Chronic Granulomatous Disease.

Mucormycosis is a rare but serious fungal infection caused by a mold family known as the Mucorales. These fungi exist throughout the environment, especially in the soil, leaves, compost piles, or decaying woods. Humans contract mucormycosis by coming in contact with the spores from fungus either by inhalation or through cuts on the skin. The population at risk for this life-threatening infection includes diabetes mellitus patients, cancer patients, premature infants, burn patients, and immunocompromised patients. The fungi that most commonly cause mucormycosis are the Rhizopus species, and the

A cross-sectional study examining Campylobacter and other zoonotic enteric pathogens in dogs that frequent dog parks in three cities in south-western Ontario and risk factors for shedding of Campylobacter spp.

An estimated 6 million pet dogs live in Canadian households with the potential to transmit zoonotic pathogens to humans. Dogs have been identified as carriers of Salmonella, Giardia and Campylobacter spp., particularly Campylobacter upsaliensis, but little is known about the prevalence and risk factors for these pathogens in pet dogs that visit dog parks. This study examined the prevalence of these organisms in the faeces of dogs visiting dog parks in three cities in south-western Ontario, as well as risk factors for shedding Campylobacter spp. and C. upsaliensis. Toxic effects of biodegradable polylactic acid nanoplastics on developing zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Plastic contamination represents a significant threat to the environment with potential health risks for all species. Recently, bio-based plastics have been introduced as a green alternative to fossil-based ones. However, bioplastic degradation products present potentially harmful effects comparable to the fossil-based ones. Polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most widely used bioplastics in the world and it requires high temperatures found in industrial composting, to degrade fully. These conditions are not typical of natural environments, where PLA degradation leads to the accumulation of mi

The epidemiological trend of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Kegalle district, Sri Lanka: A newly established disease focus and assessment of bioclimatic suitability for disease establishment using ecological niche modelling.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is prevalent in Sri Lanka since 1992. It remains as a health issue with increasing numbers and spreading from endemic to non-endemic areas in the county. Kegalle district is a new disease focus, which notified the first case in 2016. However, there is no documented evidence of the vector distribution, abundance and potential risk factors in this district. Two Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas (Rambukkana and Warakapola) that had reported the highest numbers of cases in the Kagalle district was selected and recorded cases (2016-2020) were obtained. The patients were

Environmental contamination and transmission of Ascaris suum in Danish organic pig farms.

BACKGROUND: Although Ascaris suum is the most common pig nematode, the on-farm transmission dynamics are not well described. METHODS: We performed a 1-year field study on five organic pig farms, mapping egg contamination levels in pens and pasture soil as well as faecal egg counts in starter pigs, finisher pigs, dry and lactating sows. The uppermost bedding material was sampled from three pen areas (resting, intermediate and latrine) of shallow and deep litter pens. RESULTS: Ascaris suum was found on all farms. Averaged across farm and season, the prevalence of A. suum was 48, 64, 28 and 15%

Chromosome stability of synthetic Triticum turgidum-Aegilops umbellulata hybrids.

BACKGROUND: Unreduced gamete formation during meiosis plays a critical role in natural polyploidization. However, the unreduced gamete formation mechanisms in Triticum turgidum-Aegilops umbellulata triploid F1 hybrid crosses and the chromsome numbers and compostions in T. turgidum-Ae. umbellulata F2 still not known. RESULTS: In this study, 11 T.turgidum-Ae. umbellulata triploid F1 hybrid crosses were produced by distant hybridization. All of the triploid F1 hybrids had 21 chromosomes and two basic pathways of meiotic restitution, namely first-division restitution (FDR) and single-division mei

Variations in sexual fitness among natural strains of the opportunistic human fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous ascomycete fungus, naturally inhabiting the soil and compost piles. Its conidia readily disperse into the atmosphere and cause opportunistic infections known as aspergillosis. With the emerging resistance to many antifungal drugs, our understanding of A. fumigatus epidemiology has become increasingly important for developing effective control and treatment strategies. As a pathogen capable of both sexual and asexual reproduction, mutations causing drug resistance and increased virulence could be spread rapidly in A. fumigatus populations. However, relative

Inclusion of Curcumin in the Diet of Prepartum Cows and Its Effects on Animal Health and Production.

This study aimed to evaluate whether adding curcumin to prepartum cows' diets positively affects metabolism, immune response, milk and colostrum production and quality. Forty Holstein cows were divided into two homogeneous groups, with 20 animals per treatment, balanced according to milk production (kg/day) during the previous lactation and parity. The experiment was conducted in a continuous trial, with each groups of animals randomly assigned to one of the treatments: (a) addition of curcumin to the diet (152 mg/day) in the prepartum period; (b) without additive, used as control. The study w

Regulation of photosynthesis, carbohydrate transport, and transcriptomic profiles in wheat by different fertilizers.

BACKGROUND: In winter wheat cultivation, the rational application of organic-inorganic compound fertilizers increases grain weight and improves yield; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. A 3-year field trial was conducted to investigate the effects of three fertilization regimes on photosynthesis, carbohydrate transport, and gene expression in wheat. The treatments included chemical fertilizer alone (CK), chemical fertilizer supplemented with composted pig manure (T1), and organic-inorganic compound fertilizer (T2). RESULTS: The T2 treatment resulted in significantly higher chl

A cross-sectional study examining the prevalence and risk factors for anti-microbial-resistant generic Escherichia coli in domestic dogs that frequent dog parks in three cities in south-western Ontario, Canada.

Anti-microbial resistance can threaten health by limiting treatment options and increasing the risk of hospitalization and severity of infection. Companion animals can shed anti-microbial-resistant bacteria that may result in the exposure of other dogs and humans to anti-microbial-resistant genes. The prevalence of anti-microbial-resistant generic Escherichia coli in the faeces of dogs that visited dog parks in south-western Ontario was examined and risk factors for shedding anti-microbial-resistant generic E. coli identified. Biological control of nematode parasites in cattle with nematode-trapping fungi: a survey of Danish studies.

In Denmark two series of experiments have been performed to study the interactions between larvae of bovine gastrointestinal nematode parasites and nematode-trapping fungi. For practical reasons we were interested in the possibility of depositing nematode-trapping fungi in cattle faeces after passage through the gastrointestinal tract. In the first series, laboratory tests with the fungus Arthrobotrys oligospora showed that motile free-living larvae of a wide range of animal-parasitic nematodes and some soil-living nematodes effectively induce the formation of traps. Larvae of all parasitic ne
