The rRNA gene restriction patterns of 92 isolates of Haemophilus influenzae biogroup aegyptius, associated with conjunctivitis or Brazilian purpuric fever in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, were studied with 16 + 23S rRNA from Escherichia coli as a probe. All strains were classified into 15 patterns. Isolates from Brazilian purpuric fever cases were seen only in patterns 3 (most frequently) and 4 (rarely), whereas isolates from conjunctivitis were found in all 15 patterns. The study demonstrated that rRNA from E. coli can serve as a probe for molecular epidemiology.

Prophylaxis for ophthalmia neonatorum remains in use despite decreased incidence of the condition. We report a breakthrough case of neonatal conjunctivitis in Japan caused by a levofloxacin-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria strain, co-infected with Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria. This case highlights failures in screening, prophylaxis, and treatment, underscoring the need to reassess prevention strategies.

Streptococcus pyogenes (group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus, GABHS) causes a range of human infections, including necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock syndrome, because it produces exotoxins that damage host cells, facilitate immune evasion, and serve as T cell superantigens. GABHS conjunctivitis is rare. We report a case of membranous conjunctivitis in a 3-year-old child who was treated with a combination of targeted bactericidal antimicrobials, toxin-synthesis inhibition, and amniotic membrane transplantation.

Streptococcus pneumoniae, an inhabitant of the upper respiratory mucosa, causes respiratory and invasive infections as well as conjunctivitis. PURPOSE: Evaluation of conjunctival microflora in patients with cataract, during the early post-operative period.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred twenty patients scheduled for cataract extraction were evaluated. In each patient, conjunctival swab was taken directly after cataract surgery and two to three days postoperatively. Following surgical procedure all patients received topical antibiotics alone or along with steroids. The agents were placed into conjunctival sac of the operated eye. Ophthalmic ointments were administered HS and eye drops QID.

PURPOSE: To report a patient who was diagnosed with combined adult inclusion conjunctivitis (AIC) and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma.
METHODS: This is a case report.
RESULTS: An 18-year-old male patient presented with chronic conjunctivitis and giant follicles. Evaluation by chlamydial antigen assay was positive. Conjunctival biopsy for the immunohistochemical stain and polymerase chain reaction of the left eye showed MALT lymphoma.
