Emergency contraception.

This review summarises the development of emergency contraception (EC) methods, and provides an overview on the currently available options of EC which are effective and safe back-up methods in case of non-use or failure of the regular contraception. The copper intrauterine contraceptive device is currently the most effective method. In most countries, a single dose of levonorgestrel 1.5 mg is the first-line hormonal EC given within 72 h of unprotected intercourse. The oral anti-progestogens such as mifepristone and ulipristal acetate are promising alternatives with better efficacies and a wid

Frequency of discontinuation of contraceptive use: results from a French population-based cohort.

BACKGROUND: Despite the widespread use of highly effective contraceptive methods in France, one in every three pregnancies is unintended. Among women experiencing an unintended pregnancy leading to an abortion, half had changed their contraceptive method in the 6 months preceding the abortion, in most cases switching to a less-effective method or to no method at all. This study provides estimates of method-specific contraceptive discontinuation rates for any reason and for method-related reasons among French women. METHODS: The data were drawn from the COCON survey (2000-2004), a population-b

Intrauterine devices and adolescents.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to inform the reader of new information published on intrauterine devices (IUDs) and adolescents. RECENT FINDINGS: There are few studies on the use of IUDs in adolescents. The article reviews topics related to IUD use such as adolescents' knowledge of and attitudes toward IUDs, mechanism of action of copper-releasing and levonorgestrel-releasing IUDs, benefits of using IUDs with adolescents, safety, side effects, as well as noncontraceptive benefits such as management of menstrual disorders and endometriosis using IUDs. SUMMARY: IUDs are a saf

Two into one does go: Formulation development of a multipurpose combination vaginal ring releasing dapivirine and metronidazole for prevention of HIV infection and treatment of bacterial vaginosis.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common but often asymptomatic dysbiosis of the human vagina characterized by an imbalance in the normal vaginal microbiota due to loss of lactobacilli and an overgrowth of certain anaerobic bacteria. While BV itself is not a sexually transmitted infection, it is associated with an increased risk in women of various sexually acquired infections, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. There is, therefore, a strong rationale for pursuing new multipurpose products that seek to treat or prevent BV alongside preventing HIV infection. With the dapivirine

Levonorgestrel-Releasing Intrauterine System Utilization in Patients with Developmental Delays.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent females with developmental delays (DDs) experience unique physical and emotional challenges related to menstruation. Providers often recommend hormonal medication for menstrual management. The objective of our study was to describe the utilization and safety of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) in adolescents with DDs. METHODS: We utilized the Pediatric Health Information System to identify females aged 10-25 with DDs who underwent an LNG-IUS insertion between 2011 and 2020. Using a gynecologic procedure and diagnosis codes, we assessed indica

[Post-abortion contraception].

OBJECTIVE: To establish guidelines of the French National College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians about post-abortion contraception. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of the literature about post-abortion contraception was performed on Medline and Cochrane Database between 1978 and March 2016. The guidelines of the French and foreign scientific societies were also consulted. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: After an abortion, if the woman wishes to use a contraception, it should be started as soon as possible because of the very early ovulation resumption. The contraception choice must be

[Exercise-induced oedema due to hormone-containing intrauterine device].

BACKGROUND: Oedema is a known adverse effect of the levonorgestrel-containing intrauterine device (Mirena IUD). However, exercise-induced oedema has not been described before. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 38-year-old woman presented with symptoms of diffuse, exercise-induced oedema and dyspnoea. Tests for heart failure and other causes of oedema showed no abnormalities. All symptoms resolved spontaneously after the patient initiated removal of the IUD. CONCLUSION: The pathophysiology of exercise-induced oedema is still poorly understood. When confronted with a patient with oedema (induced by exercise

Transcatheter tubal sterilization in rabbits. Technique and results.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: A potential method of nonsurgical tubal sterilization was tested in rabbits. METHODS: Metal coils were designed which could be placed into the uterotubal junction using transvaginal fluoroscopic fallopian tube catheterization. These metal coils were successfully placed unilaterally in the uterotubal junction of 32 rabbits. The contralateral fallopian tube and uterus were used as a control. The rabbits were bred, and the presence of pregnancies was confirmed by palpation. RESULTS: In 21 rabbits (66%), the coil stayed in place. Sixteen rabbits had multiple gestations

Risk factors for urinary tract infection.

The authors carried out a case-control study in 1982-1983 to investigate the possible influence of behavioral factors on the risk of urinary tract infection. Study participants were college women attending a student health service. Cases were 43 women with culture-confirmed urinary tract infection. There were two control groups: 149 women with upper respiratory infection and 227 women visiting the gynecology clinic. Using each set of controls, the study confirmed that sexual intercourse is a risk factor and that there is a dose-response effect for increasing levels of coital frequency. The stu

The diaphragm: an accomplice in recurrent urinary tract infections.

Sexually related recurrent urinary tract infections were caused by a method of contraception, the diaphragm, in 74 per cent of the women in this study. Urodynamic studies demonstrated severe alteration in urinary flow and elevation of the bladder neck angles. By altering the fit of the diaphragm, or changing to another form of birth control, 96 per cent of these women were infection-free at one year without antibiotic suppression.

Cervical Chlamydia trachomatis infection in university women: relationship to history, contraception, ectopy, and cervicitis.

Endocervical Chlamydia trachomatis infection was found in 13 of 162 volunteer female university students (8%). Infection was correlated with younger age (p less than 0.05), less than or equal to 4 years of intercourse (p less than 0.05), a history of gonorrhea (p less than 0.01), and exposure to a partner with urethritis (p less than 0.01). Women who used intrauterine or barrier contraception had less infection (2%) than did women who used oral contraception (14.3%, p less than 0.05) or none at all (10.7%, p less than 0.05). Infection was strongly associated with a cervicitis score calculated
