Febrile convulsions.

Febrile convulsions occur in 3.4 percent of children but are rarely a harbinger of epilepsy. However, children who have two or more uncomplicated, noncomplex or "simple" febrile convulsions should receive anticonvulsant therapy. Phenobarbital is recommended for children who have a single febrile convulsion that is unilateral or focal and lasts more than 15 minutes. It is also recommended for cases involving multiple convulsions in one day, a physical or neurologic abnormality or a subnormal or suboptimal developmental history.

AAV9-mediated NGLY1 gene replacement suppresses non-epileptic convulsions in Ngly1-/- rats.

N-glycanase 1 (NGLY1) deficiency is a rare autosomal-recessive neurological disorder characterized by neurological dysfunction and so far, has no effective therapy. A systemic Ngly1-/- rat model recapitulates many patient symptoms, including developmental delay, motor and cognitive deficits. Here we carried out further detailed phenotypic analyses for the Ngly1-/- rats, with particular focus on those easily translatable to patients' symptoms, i.e. sleep disturbances, EEG abnormalities and convulsive behaviors. EEG/EMG recordings revealed fragmented sleep and frequent spontaneous epileptiform d

The effect of seizure type and medication on cognitive and behavioral functioning in children with idiopathic epilepsy.

Antiepileptic drugs have been reported to have a variety of adverse effects on behavior and performance in children with epilepsy. Previous studies investigating these side effects, however, have not controlled for the baseline status of the child (e.g. underlying neurological condition, seizure type, socioeconomic status, family variables), making it difficult to determine whether changes in function are attributable to the use of medication. We investigated the cognitive and behavioral profiles of 43 children, aged from 4 to 16 years, with new onset, idiopathic seizures. Twenty-six of these

New directions in the rational design of electrical and magnetic seizure therapies: individualized Low Amplitude Seizure Therapy (iLAST) and Magnetic Seizure Therapy (MST).

Electroconvulsive therapy remains a key treatment option for severe cases of depression, but undesirable side-effects continue to limit its use. Innovations in the design of novel seizure therapies seek to improve its risk benefit ratio through enhanced control of the focality of stimulation. The design of seizure therapies with increased spatial precision is motivated by avoiding stimulation of deep brain structures implicated in memory retention, including the hippocampus. The development of two innovations in seizure therapy-individualized low-amplitude seizure therapy (iLAST) and magnetic …
