In order to enhance the understanding of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), the clinical features, laboratory characteristics, treatment and outcome of 14 patients with TTP were retrospectively analyzed and investigated. The results showed that 7 out of 14 patients with TTP had predisposing factors, such as pregnancy in 4 cases, infection in 3 cases, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in 1 case and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in 1 case. We treated 37 infections in 32 patients who had one or more significant underlying diseases. Most of the responsible micro-organisms were multiresistant, but were initially sensitive to ceftazidime. AIMS: Positive direct antiglobulin tests (DATs) are valuable in identifying the aetiology of autoimmune haemolysis and in guiding therapeutic intervention. However, in HIV-positive individuals with background polyclonal gammopathy, a positive DAT in the absence of haemolysis is common. While pancytopenia is common and was reported in Saudi Arabia, the description of autoimmune hemolytic anemia or immune thrombocytopenia has not yet been reported in the kingdom.
