OBJECTIVES: To analyse antibiotic susceptibility of bacteria associated with ulcerative keratitis in dogs.
METHODS: Bacteria isolated from 190 eyes with ulcerative keratitis were identified, and the antibiotic susceptibility of isolates was studied.
RESULTS: In total, 258 species of bacteria were isolated from the 190 eyes. Of the isolates, 78 per cent were Gram-positive and 28 per cent were Gram-negative bacteria. Persistent purulent endometritis in a mare was attributed to an unclassified species of Corynebacterium. Following intrauterine infusions of 20% betadine for 5 days the purulent vulval discharge ceased and the mare appeared clinically normal. Based on histological examination of endometrial biopsy samples, the severe acute inflammatory reaction had largely resolved 2 days after therapy. The genus Corynebacterium includes species of biotechnological, medical and veterinary importance. An atypical C. ulcerans strain, W25, was recently isolated from a case of necrotizing lymphadenitis in a wild boar. In this study, we have analysed the genome sequence of this strain and compared the phenotypic and virulence properties with other corynebacterial pathogens. Diphtheria is an uncommon bacterial infection of the upper respiratory tract. We described a surgical site infection in a young adolescent female on maintenance chemotherapy. Corynebacterium diphtheriae was recovered from the wound, and she was treated with antibiotics and antitoxin. Cutaneous diphtheria should be considered in immunocompromised patients receiving chemotherapy.

Encrusted cystitis (IC) is a rare chronic inflammatory disorder of the bladder characterized by mucosal inflammation with encrustations. This pathological process is directly related to the activity of urea-splitting bacteria in the urine. Bladder encrustations are deposits of ammonium and magnesium phosphate, as well as struvite, on the surface of the urothelium. Alloiococcus otitidis and Turicella otitidis are common bacteria of the human ear. They have frequently been isolated from the middle ear of children with otitis media (OM), though their potential role in this disease remains unclear and confounded due to their presence as commensal inhabitants of the external auditory canal. Diphtheria is an infectious disease caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, and is generally characterised by proliferation of the bacteria in the upper respiratory tract, formation of a pseudomembrane, and systemic diffusion of the diphtheria toxin throughout the body. We present the case of a young man with pseudomembranous plaques on the tongue and floor of the mouth, who received systemic and locoregional medical treatment, with a satisfactory outcome after 14 days.
