Minimizing nutrient losses to freshwater from pasture-based dairy systems.

Pasture-based dairy systems have expanded in regions with suitable climates, often driven by consumer demand for perceived environmental, animal welfare, and nutritional advantages. Expansion and intensification of such systems have increased nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) losses to water, contributing to eutrophication and groundwater contamination. To support sustainable milk production and reduce environmental impact, it is necessary to understand the transport pathways of nutrient losses and the actions that will mitigate the same. Nutrient losses arise from interactions between sources,

Bacterial diversity in ferruginous duricrust (canga) and the physicochemical variables affecting their prevalence, distribution and predicted metabolic pathways.

The ferruginous duricrust (canga) in the Iron Quadrangle (IQ), Minas Gerais, Brazil, occurs within the Campo Rupestre and presents remarkable levels of endemism and species richness. Despite the recognized importance of microorganisms for the maintenance of this ecosystem, current molecular-based studies reveal that both the taxonomic composition and the ecological functions of the canga microbiome are undiscovered. In this study, eighteen samples of canga were collected from the Serra da Piedade State Natural Monument, and their taxonomic diversity was investigated using 16S rRNA metabarcodin

Lattice Oxygen-Driven Co-Adsorption of Carbon Dioxide and Nitrate on Copper: A Pathway to Efficient Urea Electrosynthesis.

The electrochemical coupling of CO2 and NO3- on copper-based catalysts presents a sustainable strategy for urea production while simultaneously addressing wastewater denitrification. However, the inefficient random adsorption of CO2 and NO3- on the copper surface limits the interaction of the key carbon and nitrogen intermediates, thereby impeding efficient C-N coupling. In this study, we demonstrate that the residual lattice oxygen in oxide-derived copper nanosheets (OL-Cu) can effectively tune the electron distribution, thus activating neighboring copper atoms and generating electron-deficie

Mechanisms and factors controlling greenhouse gases production in agricultural drains and ponds.

Agricultural drains and ponds are underexplored but potentially significant sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Yet, the microbial pathways responsible for CH4, CO2, and N2O production, and their responses to hydrological events, remain poorly understood. Here, we applied a multi-isotope framework (δ13C-CH4, δ13C-CO2, δ15N-N2O, δ18O-N2O, and N2O site preference) to quantify GHG production processes in agricultural drains and ponds in south-eastern Australia during rainfall and irrigation events. GHG concentrations and fluxes were consistently higher in ponds than in drains, with CH4 contributi

Microbial potential to mitigate neurotoxic methylmercury accumulation in farmlands and rice.

Toxic methylmercury (CH3Hg+) is produced by microbial conversion of inorganic mercury in hypoxic environments such as rice paddy soils, and can accumulate in rice grains. Although microbial demethylation has been recognized as a crucial pathway for CH3Hg+ degradation, the identities of microbes and pathways accountable for CH3Hg+ degradation in soil remain elusive. Here, we combine 13CH3Hg+-DNA stable-isotope probing experiments with shotgun metagenomics to explore microbial taxa and associated biochemical processes involved in CH3Hg+ degradation in paddy and upland soils. We identify Pseudart

Uncovering the pathogenic mechanisms of Cronobacter turicensis: A dual transcriptomics study using a zebrafish larvae model.

PURPOSE: Cronobacter (C.) is an emerging opportunistic pathogen representing a significant cause of mortality in neonatal patients with bacteremia and meningitis. The pathobiology of Cronobacter mediated meningitis has primarily been investigated using in vitro models. In this study, we used zebrafish to investigate in vivo the infection strategy of the sepsis/meningitis-causing strain C. turicensis z3032 (LMG 23827T) and the immune response of zebrafish larvae after central nervous system (CNS) invasion. Global gene expression profiles of both organisms were analyzed using RNA-Seq. METHODS:

Anaerobic oxidation of ammonium and short-chain gaseous alkanes coupled to nitrate reduction by a bacterial consortium.

The bacterial species "Candidatus Alkanivorans nitratireducens" was recently demonstrated to mediate nitrate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of short-chain gaseous alkanes (SCGAs). In previous bioreactor enrichment studies, the species appeared to reduce nitrate in two phases, switching from denitrification to dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) in response to nitrite accumulation. The regulation of this switch or the nature of potential syntrophic partnerships with other microorganisms remains unclear. Here, we describe anaerobic multispecies cultures of bacteria that couple the

Is redox zonation an appropriate method for determining the stage of natural remediation in deep contaminated groundwater?

Groundwater contamination resulting from petroleum development poses a significant threat to drinking water sources, especially in developing countries. In situ natural remediation methods, including microbiological processes, have gained popularity for the reduction of groundwater contaminants. However, assessing the stage of remediation in deep contaminated groundwater is challenging and costly due to the complexity of diverse geological conditions and unknown initial concentrations of contaminants. This research proposes that redox zonation may be a more convenient and comprehensive indicat

Clay mineral as catalysis for controlling the nitrogen containing pollutants during sewage sludge pyrolysis.

Pyrolysis technology is considered one of the most promising processes for the environmentally friendly disposal of sewage sludge (SS), as it can neutralize pathogens, reduce hazardous substances, and promote the immobilization of heavy metals. However, nitrogen-containing gases produced in SS pyrolysis can be converted to nitrogen oxides, causing serious environmental pollution. In this study, we investigated the evolution of the nitrogen (N) element in rapid pyrolysis of SS and explored the effect of clay minerals (attapulgite, montmorillonite, and kaolin) in regulating N conversion. The res

Accumulation and characteristics of fluorescent dissolved organic matter in loess soil-based subsurface wastewater infiltration system with aeration and biochar addition.

Subsurface wastewater infiltration systems (SWISs) have been widely used to treat rural domestic sewage. However, the low nitrogen removal and severe clogging problem always restrict the sustainability of SWISs for wastewater treatment. This study investigated the effects of aeration and biochar on the accumulation of nutrients and dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the substrate of loess soil-based SWISs for understanding the accumulation characteristics of DOM and the enhanced decontamination mechanism. The results showed that biochar addition could not improve the accumulation of nitrogen an

The first metagenome of activated sludge from full-scale anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (A2O) nitrogen and phosphorus removal reactor using Illumina sequencing.

The anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (A2O) process is globally one of the widely used biological sewage treatment processes. This is the first report of a metagenomic analysis using Illumina sequencing of full-scale A2O sludge from a municipal sewage treatment plant. With more than 530,000 clean reads from different taxa and metabolic categories, the metagenome results allow us to gain insight into the functioning of the biological community of the A2O sludge. There are 51 phyla and nearly 900 genera identified from the A2O activated sludge ecosystem. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Nitrospirae and Chloro

Factors affecting public-supply well vulnerability in two karst aquifers.

Karst aquifers occur in a range of climatic and geologic settings. Nonetheless, they are commonly characterized by their vulnerability to water-quality impairment. Two karst aquifers, the Edwards aquifer in south-central Texas and the Upper Floridan aquifer in western Florida, were investigated to assess factors that control the movement of contaminants to public-supply wells (PSWs). The geochemistry of samples from a selected PSW or wellfield in each aquifer was compared with that from nearby monitoring wells and regional PSWs. Geochemistry results were integrated with age tracers, flow model

Simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal in the sulfur cycle-associated Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (EBPR) process.

Hong Kong has practiced seawater toilet flushing since 1958, saving 750,000 m(3) of freshwater every day. A high sulfate-to-COD ratio (>1.25 mg SO4(2-)/mg COD) in the saline sewage resulting from this practice has enabled us to develop the Sulfate reduction, Autotrophic denitrification and Nitrification Integrated (SANI(®)) process with minimal sludge production and oxygen demand. Recently, the SANI(®) process has been expanded to include Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (EBPR) in an alternating anaerobic/limited-oxygen (LOS-EBPR) aerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR). This paper presen

[Effect of SO2 volume fraction in flue gas on the adsorption behaviors adsorbed by ZL50 activated carbon and kinetic analysis].

The influence of SO2 dynamic adsorption behaviors using ZL50 activated carbon for flue gas desulphurization and denitrification under different SO2 volume fraction was investigated experimentally, and the kinetic analysis was conducted by kinetic models. With the increase of SO2 volume fraction in flue gas, the SO2 removal ratio and the activity ratio of ZL50 activated carbon decreased, respectively, and SO2 adsorption rate and capacity increased correspondingly. The calculated results indicate that Bangham model has the best prediction effect, the chemisorption processes of SO2 was significan

Divalent metal addition restores sulfide-inhibited N(2)O reduction in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) inhibits the last step of the denitrification process, i.e. the reduction of nitrous oxide (N(2)O) to dinitrogen gas (N(2)), both in natural environments (marine sediments) and industrial processes (activated sludge, methanogenic sludge, BioDeNOx process). In a previously published study, we showed that the inhibitory effect of sulfide to N(2)O reduction in mixed microbial communities is reversible and can be counteracted by dosing trace amounts of copper. It remained, however, unclear if this was due to copper sulfide precipitation or a retrofitting of the copper cont

Nitrous oxide reductase genes (nosZ) of denitrifying microbial populations in soil and the earthworm gut are phylogenetically similar.

Earthworms emit nitrous oxide (N2O) and dinitrogen (N2). It has been hypothesized that the in situ conditions of the earthworm gut activates ingested soil denitrifiers during gut passage and leads to these in vivo emissions (M. A. Horn, A. Schramm, and H. L. Drake, Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 69:1662-1669, 2003). This hypothesis implies that the denitrifiers in the earthworm gut are not endemic to the gut but rather are regular members of the soil denitrifier population. To test this hypothesis, the denitrifier populations of gut and soil from three different sites were comparatively assessed by

Enhanced rapid acclimation of nitrifying sludge to sulfamethoxazole stress via exogenous quorum-sensing signal molecules.

Nitrifying sludge is capable of simultaneous removal of high-concentration ammonia nitrogen and sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Quorum sensing mediated by acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) has emerged as a potential regulatory tool to modulate microbial community function and stress resistance. However, the effects of AHLs on nitrifying sludge under SMX stress remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether AHLs can facilitate the acclimation of nitrifying sludge under SMX exposure. Sequencing batch reactor experiment results demonstrated that under the shock loading of 500 μg/L SMX, the additio

Macroinvertebrates, a forgotten player in the nutrient dynamics of riparian buffer zones.

One of the main causes of poor ecological surface water quality in Europe is nutrient enrichment due to agricultural activities. Riparian buffer zones, the vegetative zones between agricultural land and surface waters, have proven to retain and remove nutrients, yet with highly variable effectivity. So far, the role of invertebrates as an explanation for this variability remains severely overlooked. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the contribution of invertebrates to nutrient retention and removal processes of riparian buffer zones. Only four articles on invertebrate activity in riparian

Different effects of bio/non-degradable microplastics on sewage sludge compost performance: Focusing on antibiotic resistance genes, virulence factors and key metabolic functions.

Microplastics (MP) have aroused increasing concern due to the negative environmental impact. However, the impact of bio/non-biodegradable MPs on the sludge composting process has not been thoroughly investigated. This study examined antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), virulence factors (VFs), and microbial community functions in sludge compost with the application of polylactic acid (PLA) and polypropylene (PP), using metagenomic sequencing. The findings indicated that both types of MPs could extend the thermophilic phase, enhance microbial activity, and inhibit the formation of humic acids. C

Comparative impact analysis of nitrate reduction by typical components of natural organic compounds in magnetite-bearing riparian zones.

As the key interface, the nitrate removal capacity of riparian zones is receiving close attention. Although naturally occurring organic compounds in this environment play a pivotal role in shaping microbial communities and influencing the nitrate removal capacity, the relevant research is inadequate. Given the complexity of riparian environments, in this study, we added representative natural organic matter (fulvic acid, butyric acid, naphthalene, starch, and sodium bicarbonate) as carbon conditions and incorporated magnetite to simulate riparian zone components. The study investigated the nit
