Irritant contact dermatitis is the most frequent cause of occupational hand eczema and results from undue environmental demands on the skin. Preventive measures to reduce the irritant stress to the skin is the best method of tackling this problem.

Chemicals that may cause allergy are being used in structure nails. In this case report two structure nail makers are described, who were diagnosed with occupational asthma in clinical studies. The studies included an inhalational exposure simulating the work. The causative agents of occupational asthma are apparently the acrylate compounds contained in the chemicals; use of these compounds has previously been linked with allergic contact dermatitis and asthma. Since the making of structure nails involves health risks, such work requires appropriate premises and personal protection.

Contact dermatitis is a serious public health and dermatologic concern. The prevalence of contact dermatitis in the United States was estimated to be 13.6 per 1000 population according to the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey using physical examinations by dermatologists of a selected sample of Americans. The American Medical Care Survey estimated that for all American physicians dermatitis is the second most common dermatologic diagnosis proffered. It is essential that government, industry, and dermatologists work together to enhance regulatory methods to control and prevent

1. The prevalence of latex allergy in health care workers is estimated to be between 10% and 17%. 2. Reactions from wearing latex gloves can include irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and contact urticaria from latex proteins. 3. Individuals with a history of atopy, multiple surgeries early in life (particularly with bladder catheterization), or allergies to certain foods are considered at risk of latex allergy. 4. An early intervention protocol and documentation forms are offered for occupational health nurses faced with assessing potentially latex allergic employees.

Medical undergraduate tutorials in occupational medicine were introduced in 1993 in Singapore. The tutorials discuss three case studies of patients likely to be encountered in primary health care practice--occupational dermatitis, tinnitus in a noise-exposed worker, and the finding of anaemia in a pre-employment examination. The cases are used to illustrate the importance of identification of occupational factors in the causation of disease; consideration of occupational factors in the management of disease; and measures for prevention of occupational and work-related diseases and promotion of

BACKGROUND: Exposure to nickel, cobalt and chromate are important causes of occupational contact dermatitis.
OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of nickel, cobalt and chromate allergy in a population of consecutive patients and to investigate the possible association with individual and occupational risk factors.
PATIENTS/METHODS: A total of 14 464 patients (67.6% women and 32.4% men) with suspected allergic dermatitis underwent patch tests. The associations between patch test results and occupations were studied by multivariate logistic regression analysis.
RESULTS: About 24.6% of the p

BACKGROUND: The impact of skin disease on heath-related quality of life (QoL) is often underrecognized, and there is little research about health-related QoL in patch-tested populations.
OBJECTIVE: A pilot study to assess baseline QoL in dermatitis patients referred to a specialized center for patch testing.
METHODS: A convenience sample of patients presenting for patch testing (n = 107) completed a survey, Skindex-16+5, which measures QoL in four domains: symptoms, emotions, functioning, and occupational.
RESULTS: Responses were indexed from 0 (never bothered) to 100 (always bothered). Emo

Hand eczema (HE) imposes a significant socioeconomic burden, particularly in severe and occupational cases. To identify major allergens and associated factors in Chinese patients with HE referred for patch testing, we conducted a retrospective cohort study included 788 cases of HE detected from 4438 patients who were patch-tested in Shanghai, China, between 2018 and 2023. The HE group had an 82.23% patch-test positivity rate. N-Isopropyl-N-Phenyl-4-Phenylenediamine were more common in the HE than in the non-HE group after false discovery rate (FDR) correction (FDR-adjusted p < 0.05), while oth

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers have an increased risk of occupational dermatoses. In January 2002, the Department of Social Medicine, Occupational and Environmental Dermatology of the University of Heidelberg started organizing special prevention courses for this group of employees in cooperation with the Accident Prevention & Insurance Association for Health Care Workers (BGW). The major aims are to improve individual skin protection and skin care habits, as well as to optimize diagnostic procedures and therapy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The two-day course has up to 14 participants. Teaching uni

BACKGROUND: Nickel is the most common cause of contact allergy and an important risk factor for hand eczema. Visualization techniques may be powerful in showing exposures. The dimethylglyoxime (DMG) test might be used to establish skin exposure to nickel.
OBJECTIVES: To develop and evaluate methods for visualization of nickel on the skin by the DMG test and hand imprints.
METHODS: Nickel solutions at different concentrations were applied in duplicate on the hands in healthy subjects (n = 5). The DMG test and acid wipe sampling for quantification were then performed. Hand imprints were taken

This cross-sectional study was carried out in Mansoura, Egypt to assess the prevalence of occupational dermatoses and their possible risk factors on a convenience sample of car mechanics. Sociodemographic and occupational data were collected, and clinical examination was done. Prevalence of skin diseases was 45.4% and that of exclusively occupational skin diseases was 9.2%. Irritant contact dermatitis, eczema, and tar/oil acne were the most common types (4.6%, 3.1%, 3.1%, respectively). The logistic regression analysis revealed that the risk of occupational dermatoses increased significantly w

BACKGROUND: Asthma and atopic dermatitis are common allergic conditions that contribute to substantial health loss, economic burden, and pain across individuals of all ages worldwide. Therefore, as a component of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021, we present updated estimates of the prevalence, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), incidence, and deaths due to asthma and atopic dermatitis and the burden attributable to modifiable risk factors, with forecasted prevalence up to 2050.
METHODS: Asthma and atopic dermatitis prevalence, incidence, DALYs, a

The American Contact Dermatitis Society named toluene-2,5-diamine sulfate (PTDS) the 2025 Allergen of the Year. Toluene-2,5-diamine sulfate is widely used as an alternative to para-phenylenediamine (PPD) in hair dyes but is itself a potent and likely underreported contact allergen. Cross-reactivity with PPD is common. Allergic contact dermatitis to PTDS manifests similarly to PPD reactions and disproportionately affects hairdressers and individuals who frequently use hair dye. Clinical recommendations include patch testing for PTDS and PPD (with consideration of delayed readings), occupational

Atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis are among the most common dermatologic conditions encountered by the primary care clinician. Their presentation varies and can mimic infectious and other noninfectious conditions, making a thorough history essential, with particular emphasis on exposure to environmental and occupational irritants, as well as recognition of commonly affected sites. For all of these conditions, control of symptoms is often the goal of treatment, starting with general supportive care measures like frequent emollient use and often relying on topical steroidal and nonsteroid

Contact allergies are common cause of eczema in all age groups and are one of the most common causes of occupational disability. Contact dermatitis (CD) can be divided into irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. Distinguishing between irritant and allergic triggers of CD by clinical and histologic examinations can be challenging. The approach to patients with CD should consist of a detailed (work and leisure) history, skin examination, patch tests with allergens based on history, physical examination, education on materials that contain the allergen and adequate therapy and prevention.
