Effectiveness of phenylpropanolamine in the management of moderate obesity.

Phenylpropanolamine (PPA), an over-the-counter drug, is used for weight reduction but its effectiveness is controversial. One hundred and one ambulatory subjects (85 female; 16 male), 21-61 years old, 15-45% overweight but otherwise healthy, were studied. The study was divided into two phases: (i) a double blind (DB), placebo-controlled (P) phase in which all subjects took placebo for two weeks and subsequently took PPA, 75 mg sustained release or placebo for six weeks and (ii) an extended double blind phase in which subjects chose to continue up to 20 weeks. All subjects were instructed on a

Food restriction retards aging of the pineal gland.

The effects of chronic (40%) food restriction from 6 weeks of age were studied in aging male Fisher 344 rats. When compared with 3-month-old, ad libitum fed rats, pineal N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity had declined to less than 30% and pineal and serum levels of melatonin to 40% after 28 months when feeding had been ad libitum. Food restriction significantly retarded this development (P less than 0.05) giving NAT and melatonin levels which were twice as high as in the ad libitum fed group. Nighttime levels of pineal serotonin (5-HT) were similar in food-restricted and ad libitum fed old rat

Eating disorders, perceived control, assertiveness and hostility.

There are anecdotal claims that eating disorder patients perceive themselves as highly controlled by the family and by society, but that they do not show assertive behaviour towards controllers. Anorexic and bulimic females were compared with female psychiatric patients, dieters and non-dieting controls on measures of eating disorder symptomatology, locus of control, assertiveness, inwardly directed hostility, family control and family encouragement of independence. Eating disorder patients reported significantly more external control, more inwardly directed hostility, less self-assertion and

[Methodologic approach to the therapeutic problem of infant and childhood obesity. Review of the literature and personal experience].

Notwithstanding the high prevalence and morbidity, current knowledge of obesity is rather rudimentary. Nevertheless recent findings have enabled us to surmount anachronistic nosographic generalizations whereby excess weight was attributed only to inappropriate and excessive food intake and the lack of physical exercise. Various studies indicate that there are complex interactions in determining weight excess: genetic, psychosocial, cultural but also biochemical factors are incriminated and it is now recognised that the aetiology of obesity is multifactorial and that, consequently, there are di

Abnormal eating attitudes in London schoolgirls--a prospective epidemiological study: factors associated with abnormal response on screening questionnaires.

One thousand and ten unselected London state schoolgirls were screened by questionnaire to identify an 'at risk' cohort displaying abnormal eating attitudes and two control cohorts, one with probable general psychiatric morbidity, one without. Members of all cohorts were assessed at interview for the presence of eating disorder and for putative risk factors implicated in the development of anorexia nervosa. A prevalence rate of 0.99% was detected for clinical eating disorder and 1.78% for the partial syndrome of eating disorder. Factors specifically associated with abnormal eating attitudes we

Substitution of sugar-sweetened beverages with other beverage alternatives: a review of long-term health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Excessive consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) has become an intractable public health concern worldwide, making investigation of healthy beverage alternatives for SSBs imperative. AIM: To summarize the available evidence on the effects of replacing SSBs with beverage alternatives on long-term health outcomes. METHOD: We systematically retrieved studies from six electronic databases from inception to November 2013. Prospective cohort studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the effects of substituting beverage alternatives for SSBs on long-term health

Lowering dietary crude protein and cation-anion difference to reduce manure ammonia emissions in lactating cows.

The objectives of the study were to determine the effects of reducing dietary CP, reducing DCAD, or the combination of reducing CP and DCAD on lactation performance and manure NH3 emissions. A total of 16 mid-lactating Holstein cows were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with a 21-d period consisting of 14-d diet adaptation and 7-d sample collection. Cows were randomly assigned to: CON, a control diet (17.0% CP and 221 mEq/kg DCAD on a DM basis); RCP, a reduced-CP diet (15.2% CP and 221.4 mEq/kg DCAD on a DM basis); RDCAD, a reduced-DCAD diet (16.8% CP and -11 mEq/kg DCAD on a DM

Lost in translation: dietary management of cardiovascular risk factors is seldom implemented.

OBJECTIVE: To assess dietary management of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) in the general population. METHOD: Cross-sectional study conducted between 2009 and 2012 on 4811 participants (2567 women, 58±11years) living in Lausanne, Switzerland. RESULTS: Sixteen percent of participants diagnosed with overweight/obesity reported a slimming diet. Slimming diet was associated with diagnosis of hypertension: Odds ratio and (95% confidence interval): 0.61 (0.40-0.93); older age [0.84 (0.58-1.21), 0.79 (0.53-1.18) and 0.47 (0.27-0.81) for [50-60[, [60-70[ and [70+ years, respectively]; female gen

The effects of a high-protein, low-fat, ketogenic diet on adolescents with morbid obesity: body composition, blood chemistries, and sleep abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and metabolic impact of a high-protein, low-carbohydrate, low-fat ketogenic diet (K diet) in the treatment of morbidly obese adolescents with initial weights of >200% of ideal body weight. METHODS: Six adolescents, aged 12 to 15 years, weighing an average of 147.8 kg (range, 120.6-198.6 kg) and having an average body mass index of 50.9 kg/m (39.8-63.0 kg/m), consumed the K diet for 8 weeks. Daily intake consisted of 650 to 725 calories, which was substantively in the form of protein (80-100 g). The diet was very low in carbohydrates (25 g) and fat (25 g). T

Combined effects of dietary protein type and fat level on the body fat-reducing activity of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in rats.

The interaction of dietary protein type and fat level on the body fat-reducing activity of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) was studied in male rats fed diets containing casein (CAS) or soy protein (SOY) as a protein source with low fat (LF, 6.0% soybean oil) or high fat (HF, 13.0% soybean oil) combinations for 4 weeks. CLA was added at the 1.0% level to all diets. The weight of perirenal adipose tissue tended to be lower in the SOY groups than in the corresponding CAS groups, and the difference between the LF diets was significant. The weight of epididymal adipose tissue showed a similar but in

Inositol deficiency diet and lithium effects.

OBJECTIVES: A major hypothesis explaining the therapeutic effect of lithium (Li) in mania is depletion of inositol via inhibition of inositol monophosphatase. However, inositol is also present in the diet. Restriction of dietary inositol could theoretically enhance the effects of Li. METHODS: We used dietary inositol restriction in animal studies and also devised a palatable diet for humans that is 90% free of inositol. RESULTS: Dietary inositol restriction significantly augmented the inositol-reducing effect of Li in rat frontal cortex. Li reduced inositol levels by 4.7%, inositol-deficient

The DASH diet and blood pressure.

High blood pressure (also called hypertension) is one of the most important and common risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) and other chronic diseases. National guidelines recommend that all individuals with blood pressure readings of 120/80 mm Hg or higher adopt healthy lifestyle habits, including the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, to manage their blood pressure. The DASH diet, which is high in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products and reduced in fat, has been shown in large, randomized, controlled trials to reduce blood pressure signifi
