PURPOSE: This clinical trial is aimed at evaluating the impact of prostate cancer screening on cancer-specific mortality.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Forty-six thousand four hundred and eighty-six (46,486) men aged 45-80 years registered in the electoral roll of the Quebec city area were randomized in 1988 between screening and no screening. Screening included measurement of serum prostatic specific antigen (PSA) using 3.0 ng/ml as upper limit of normal and digital rectal examination (DRE) at first visit. African American men bear disproportionate burden of prostate cancer (PCa) that can be reduced by early detection. A 15-minute culturally appropriate PCa education intervention developed to communicate effective, relevant, and balanced PCa screening information to low-income African American men was evaluated in men 42 years and older who had not been screened in one year. Endoanorectal ultrasonography (EARUS) may be used for diagnosing various anorectal disorders. EARUS is easy to perform, has a short learning curve, and causes less discomfort than routine digital examination. We investigated the effect of prostatic inflammation on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and per cent-free PSA levels changing after antibacterial therapy.
