Association of Social Adversity with Comorbid Diabetes and Depression Symptoms in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos Sociocultural Ancillary Study: A Syndemic Framework.

BACKGROUND: U.S. Hispanics/Latinos experience high lifetime risk for Type 2 diabetes and concurrent psychological depression. This comorbidity is associated with poorer self-management, worse disease outcomes, and higher mortality. Syndemic theory is a novel social epidemiological framework that emphasizes the role of economic and social adversity in promoting disease comorbidity and health disparities. PURPOSE: Informed by the syndemic framework, this study explored associations of socioeconomic and psychosocial adversity (low income/education, trauma history, adverse childhood experiences,

Intergenerational communication regarding Indian Residential Schools: Implications for cultural identity, perceived discrimination, and depressive symptoms.

Two studies assessed the nature of parental communication about the trauma of Indian Residential Schools (IRSs) in relation to the psychological distress of their adult offspring, and whether the link between parental communication and distress was mediated by offsprings' greater awareness of collective discrimination or sense of pride in cultural identity. In Study 1, an online survey of Indigenous participants from across Canada (N = 498) demonstrated a curvilinear relation between the extent to which parents talked about their negative IRS experiences and the severity of depressive symptoms

Clinical and forensic pathways in the treatment and redress of racial trauma.

OBJECTIVE: Racial trauma, stemming from individual and systemic experiences of racism, has increasingly been recognized as a source of significant psychological and functional harm (Carter, 2007; Mosley et al., 2021). This article examines two frameworks for conceptualizing racial trauma: the diagnostic framework, which emphasizes cumulative trauma and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5-consistent symptomatology, and the psychological injury framework, which focuses on proximal functional impairment and positions harm as an external consequence of race-based discrimination

Psychosocial Issues in the Era of New AIDS Treatments from the Perspective of Persons Living with HIV.

In the past, HIV disease meant an almost invariably downward health course. New highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) regimens have improved the health outlook for many persons living with HIV/AIDS but may create new psychological and coping challenges. In this study, open-ended, in-depth interviews were undertaken with an ethnically diverse sample of 44 purposively selected men and women with HIV disease who were on HAART regimens. The interviews were transcribed and qualitatively coded to identify major themes. While patients responding well to the regimens held optimistic views for t

Psychometric Evaluation and Refinement of the Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Self Report: Development of the LPFS-SR Short-Forms.

The DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) provides a dimensional framework for assessing personality dysfunction, and the Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Self Report (LPFS-SR) is a widely used instrument for evaluating the construct. However, its psychometric properties and practical feasibility remain areas of concern due to its extensive item length and structural misspecification. A sample of 344 participants was recruited to assess the psychometric properties of the LPFS-SR using bifactor modeling and item response theory (IRT) analyses. We replicated general fact

The protective and promotive effects of parent racial-ethnic socialization on Asian American adolescents' psychosocial well-being: A daily-diary study.

Families of color often face daily racist incidents that lead to dynamic interactions and race-based messaging between parents and children; however, few studies have examined this phenomenon in Asian American families. Using 60 days of daily-diary data from a national sample of 108 adolescents (53.7% girls; range = 11-18-year-old; Mage = 14.8 years, SDage = 1.7, 29.6% low-income), this study examined (a) how different forms of parental racial-ethnic socialization (PRES) moderated associations between racial-ethnic discrimination (RED) and Asian American adolescents' psychosocial well-being an

Major discriminatory events and risk for psychotic experiences among Black Americans.

Racism is a multidimensional construct that impacts risk for psychosis through various complex pathways. Previous research has yet to fully explore how major racial discriminatory events contribute to risk for psychotic experiences in the general population. We examined the National Survey of American Life to analyze the effects of 9 major racial discriminatory events on lifetime psychotic experiences among Black Americans. By examining each event separately, we found that police discrimination was associated with increased risk for lifetime psychotic experiences after adjusting for demographi

Quality of life and social support as key determinants of anxiety and depression in Myasthenia Gravis: evidence from a Chinese cohort.

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune disorder frequently accompanied by anxiety and depression, which aggravate disease burden. Evidence on the relationship between clinical characteristics and psychological symptoms in MG remains inconsistent. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 93 Chinese MG patients. Clinical and demographic data were collected, and anxiety and depression were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Associations were examined by correlation, chi-square tests, and logistic regression with false discovery rate (FDR)

The Impact of Gender Affirming Medical Care During Adolescence on Adult Health Outcomes Among Transgender and Gender Diverse Individuals in the United States: The Role of State-Level Policy Stigma.

Purpose: Gender affirming medical care (GAMC) aims to alleviate gender dysphoria by helping people align their physical body more closely with their gender identity. Bills seeking to limit or prohibit GAMC for trans children and adolescents have become a controversial topic. This study aimed to examine whether exposures to GAMC during adolescence are associated with adult psychological and general health outcomes, and to demonstrate the mechanism through which state-level legislation may work to moderate the association. Methods: We conducted analyses using data from the 2015 U.S. Transgender

Overlap of heartburn, functional dyspepsia, and irritable bowel syndrome in a population sample: Prevalence, temporal stability, and associated comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: Co-occurring (overlapping) irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), functional dyspepsia (FD), and heartburn has been observed. However, whether it is a distinct entity has not been established, nor what clinical, demographic, lifestyle, and psychological traits are associated with it. This study sought to estimate the prevalence and temporal stability of this overlap and to identify features specific to it in order to gain some insights into the potential etiopathogenesis. METHODS: Two waves of a survey to a population-representative sample were conducted 3 years apart, recruiting 1312 in

Persistent impairments in hippocampal, dorsal striatal, and prefrontal cortical function following repeated photoperiod shifts in rats.

Cognitive impairments are observed when learned associations are being acquired or retrieved during a period of circadian disruption. However, the extent of the functional impacts on previously acquired associations following circadian rhythm re-entrainment is unknown. The impacts of repeated photoperiod shifts on learning and memory in male and female rats were examined. For these experiments, rats were trained on a spatial version of the Morris water task (MWT) and a visual discrimination task designed for the 8-arm radial maze. Following asymptotic performance on these tasks, rats experienc

The Alternative Model of Personality Disorders: Assessment, Convergent and Discriminant Validity, and a Look to the Future.

The Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) is a dimensional, empirically based diagnostic system developed to overcome the serious limitations of traditional categories. We review the mounting evidence on its convergent and discriminant validity, with an incursion into the less-studied ICD-11 system. In the literature, the AMPD's Pathological Trait Model (Criterion B) shows excellent convergence with normal personality traits, and it could be useful as an organizing framework for mental disorders. In contrast, Personality Functioning (Criterion A) cannot be distinguished from person

Psychological distress, loneliness, and satisfaction with life during the COVID-19 pandemic: a longitudinal study comparing migrants and non-migrants in Norway.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted migrants' health and well-being, with some effects becoming evident months into the crisis. Psychological distress, loneliness, and satisfaction with life, which are indicators closely tied to mental health and well-being, were critically affected during the pandemic. However, comparative longitudinal studies of these parameters across migrant and non-migrant population remain scarce. This study compares the evolution of psychological distress, loneliness, and satisfaction with life during the pandemic between migrants and non-migra
