Broiler chickens were raised in separate rooms kept at temperatures of either 27 C or 16 C from 28 through 39 days of age. At the high temperature mouth breathing was recorded, but it was absent at the lower temperature. The number of dust particles in the air was greater in the warm rooms. More than 50% of the chickens in warm rooms had microscopic lesions in the bronchi of their lungs, whereas fewer than 5% of chickens in cold rooms had such lesions. Sixty new employees in a cotton textile mill were followed up for five years to study their occurrence of byssinosis and its natural history. Results showed that the workers complained more cough, expectoration and other respiratory irritation symptoms at their early exposure to cotton dust, and the frequency of chest tightness in them reached the peak one year after exposure and remained at higher level later. In this report of a 5-yr longitudinal study of workers employed at six cotton textile mills, exposure and across-shift FEV1 change were evaluated as possible predictors of the annual change in FEV1 for yarn manufacturing workers. Guinea-pigs were exposed for 14 days to an aerosol of titanium dioxide (TiO2) dust to produce macrophage blockade. Groups of the animals were later infected by aerosol with Legionella pneumophila. Histological and ultrastructural studies showed that TiO2 dust alone was inert and non-fibrogenic and even at 6 weeks induced no pathological lesions in the lungs, apart from accumulation of macrophages in interalveolar septa.
