BACKGROUND: Ebstein's anomaly (EA) is a rare congenital heart disease with significantly phenotypic heterogeneity, accompanied with multiple associated phenotypes. The classification of cases with EA based on a standardized vocabulary of phenotypic abnormalities from Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) and its association with adverse clinical outcomes has yet to be investigated.
METHODS: We developed a deep phenotyping algorithm for Chinese electronic medical records (EMRs) from the Fuwai Hospital to ascertain EA cases. EA-associated phenotypes were standardized according to HPO annotation, and a

In Ebstein's anomaly, percutaneous atrial septal defect (ASD) closure for the treatment of hypoxemia due to a right-to-left interatrial shunt remains controversial. We report the case of a 40-year-old woman with Ebstein's anomaly who developed cyanosis and shortness of breath on exercise. Her symptoms improved after percutaneous ASD closure and her clinical course has been good during follow-up. The balloon ASD occlusion test, combined with dobutamine stimulation before the procedure, is useful to confirm treatment indication. A prior electrophysiological evaluation is also important because E

Ebstein's anomaly is a rare congenital heart disorder that causes displacement of the tricuspid valve towards the apex of the heart. Patients with this anomaly rarely survive beyond the age of 70 without surgical correction. When such patients survive till adulthood, they tend to present with atrial arrhythmias. Although radiofrequency ablation is harder to successfully complete due to disrupted anatomy of the heart, it can be the best choice for terminating arrhythmias in such patients. Here, we present a case of a 76-year-old patient with an uncorrected Ebstein's anomaly that presented with

Ebstein's anomaly is defined as the significant apical displacement of the tricuspid valve causing tricuspid regurgitation. Although a variety of concomitant lesions have been previously described, we herein introduce an unusual presentation. Our patient was an 86-year-old man with a primary presentation of typical chest pain in the setting of recently diagnosed coronary artery disease with concomitant Ebstein's anomaly. We found mild-to-moderate tricuspid regurgitation, bicuspid aortic valve, persistent left superior vena cava, and patent foramen ovale. The patient had suffered from chest dis

A 13-year-old boy presented with right atrial aneurysm and downward displacement of the anterior leaflet in the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle, without tricuspid valve regurgitation. Paroxysmal atrial flutter was caused by an abnormal electrical re-entry circuit, which could not be treated using catheter radiofrequency ablation. Therefore, the patient underwent surgical ablation and resection of the enlarged right atrial wall. The anterior leaflet of the tricuspid valve was plastered and displaced downward into the right ventricle, which resembled Ebstein's anomaly. Pathological eval

We report the case of a young patient with repaired Ebstein's anomaly who developed severe tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy and a large apical thrombus as a consequence of sustained atrial flutter with a 2:1 conduction. In spite of a dramatic course in hospital with prolonged mechanical resuscitation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, she survived and made a rapid and full recovery. This remarkable case underlines that atrial arrhythmias, the most common complication in adults with congenital heart disease, may have devastating outcomes when timely recognition is missed and treatment d

Non-compaction of the ventricular myocardium is a congenital dysfunction of ventricular morphogenesis caused by the arrest of normal embryogenesis of the ventricles. It is considered as a rare disease and can involve both ventricles but commonly the left ventricle. It is classified into isolated non-compaction of the ventricles and non-compaction associated with other congenital heart defects. Its association with Ebstein's anomaly is very rare. We are reporting a rare case of severe heart failure and complex cardiac anomaly including biventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy, Ebstein's anom

A 54-year-old man, scheduled for a clavicle fracture repair, appeared asymptomatic with 120 beats x min(-1) tachycardia and ECG abnormalities in preoperative anesthetic interview. He was not suffering from pain derived from clavicle fracture despite tachycardia. He was consulted with a cardiac physician. Downward displacement of tricuspid valve was detected by echocardiography and he was diagnosed Ebstein's anomaly. Right-left shunt did not exist, tricuspid regurgitation was grade I, and LV function was within normal ranges. Hence our anesthetic goal was to avoid arrhythmia, anesthesia was ind

A 26-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of exertional dyspnea (New York Heart Association III), general fatigue and palpitations over the past 2 months. She had normal psychosomatic development until adulthood, no previous pregnancies and a history of rheumatic fever at young age. Although she referred a slow gradual worsening of general conditions for 2 years, no clinical evaluations were previously performed.

We sought to determine whether cerebral vascular resistance and left ventricular myocardial performance (LVTei) are abnormal in fetuses with Ebstein's anomaly. The pulsatility index of the middle cerebral artery (MCAPI) and umbilical artery (UAPI), LVTei, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and fetal cardiovascular profile score in 11 fetuses with Ebstein's anomaly were evaluated by fetal echocardiography. MCAPI/UAPI values were calculated for the Ebstein's anomaly group. The control group included 44 healthy fetuses of uncomplicated pregnancies matched for gestational age (according to

We present a case of Ebstein's anomaly revealed by symptoms occurring at high altitude. A 63 year old male with no previous symptoms of cardiovascular disease developed acute severe shortness of breath when walking up a flight of stairs at an altitude of 2500 m. Echocardiography showed apical displacement of the tricuspid valve. Exercise capacity at sea level was normal, as were oxygen saturation at rest and maximal exercise. We think that the patient's symptoms can be explained by increased afterload on the right ventricle during exercise at high altitude. The functional capacity of the small

Cyanotic neonates with Ebstein's anomaly associated with pulmonary atresia are a subgroup with the high mortality rate in pediatric cardiac surgery. We report a case of a severely symptomatic low birth weight neonate with Ebstein's anomaly and pulmonary atresia. A biventricular repair with Danielson-type tricuspid valve repair was performed. The baby tolerated the procedure with adequate hemodynamics, but died of peritoneal hemorrhage on the second postoperative day. This report could be an addition to the recent literature regarding the feasibility of biventricular repair for symptomatic neon

OBJECTIVES: We sought to describe a new technique for tricuspid valve repair in Ebstein's anomaly and to report early echocardiographic results, as well as early and midterm clinical outcomes.
METHODS: From November 1993 through August 2005, 40 consecutive patients with Ebstein's anomaly (mean age, 16.8 +/- 12.3 years) underwent a new surgical repair modified from Carpentier's procedure, the principal details of which are as follows. The anterior and posterior tricuspid valve leaflets are mobilized from their anomalous attachments in the right ventricle, and the free edge of this complex is r

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate efficacy of one-step and two-step surgery approach in patients with arrhythmias combined with Ebstein's anomaly.
METHODS: Fifty-three patients with Ebstein's anomaly combined with tachyarrhythmias (58.5% men, 41.5% women, mean age 21.6+/-10.7 years) were operated on. In group A (32 patients), one-step surgical correction (simultaneous intraoperative elimination of arrhythmias and congenital heart defect repair) was performed, whereas in group B (21 patients), two-step surgery was performed with initial elimination of arrhythmogenic substrate by transcatheter radiofreque

We describe our experience in using live/real time three-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography (3D TTE) in the assessment of five adult patients with Ebstein's anomaly. The technique was found useful in assessing the distribution and extent of tethering of each of the three leaflets of the tricuspid valve (TV) to the underlying right ventricular walls and the ventricular septum. The characteristic bubble-like appearance resulting from bulging of the non-tethered areas of the TV leaflets was also well visualized in three dimensions and their size measured. Thus, an estimate of the nontethe

Ebstein's anomaly, although the most common malformation of the tricuspid valve, is a rare disease. Its association with other syndromes and extracardiac anomalies is very rare and has been reported in only a few cases. A case of prenatal diagnosis of Ebstein's anomaly in a patient with Down's syndrome is reported.
