Stealing behavior and impulsivity in individuals with kleptomania who have been arrested for shoplifting.

OBJECTIVES: Kleptomania is characterized by strong urges to steal and is one of only a few psychiatric disorders defined by illegal behaviors, but the clinical characteristics of individuals with kleptomania who have faced legal consequences due to their behavior are poorly understood. METHOD: From 2001 to 2012, we recruited 107 adult participants with DSM-IV kleptomania. Participants with a history of shoplifting-related arrest (N=82) were compared with those who had no such history (N=25) on demographics, clinical features, and a self-report measure of impulsivity. RESULTS: Participants wh

Contributions of family environment and parenting processes to sexual risk and substance use of rural African American males: a 4-year longitudinal analysis.

This study sought to identify factors that forecast sexual risk and alcohol or other substance use patterns among 411 rural African American males as they transitioned from middle childhood to late adolescence. In addition, an exploration was undertaken to examine the contribution of both risk and protective factors in distinguishing rural African American males at highest risk for engaging in risky sexual behavior and elevated substance use from those with relatively low risk of engaging in these behaviors. Findings revealed that exposure to negative life events during middle childhood has pr

Prenatal sulfur dioxide exposure induces changes in the behavior of adult male mice during agonistic encounters.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the most important pollutants of the western countries, responsible for several cardiopulmonary diseases in humans. SO2 affects both young and adult people, causing low work productivity with social and economical costs extremely high for the communities. To test whether or not SO2 produces changes in social and/or agonistic behavior of laboratory animals, outbred CD-1 male mice were prenatally exposed to different SO2 concentrations (0, 5, 12, or 30 ppm) up to pregnancy day 14. At adulthood, following a 4-week isolation period, they underwent an aggressive encou

Story worlds as social armor: Novel reading habits attenuate the autistic-traits to social anxiety pathway.

OBJECTIVE: Autistic traits are common in school-age children and frequently co-occur with social anxiety, which can precipitate behavioral problems. Guided by Social Motivation Theory and the Reading-Empathy framework, we tested whether children's self-directed novel-reading habits (NRH) buffer the pathway from autistic symptoms to behavioral problems via social anxiety. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was completed by 1240 pupils aged 8-15 years from mainstream schools in Luzhou, China. Measures included the Childhood Autism Rating Scale, Social Anxiety Scale for Children, Child Behavior C

Social economic decision-making and psychopathy: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Psychopathy is a personality construct that encompasses a constellation of traits reflecting emotional dysfunction and antisocial behavior. This constellation has consistently been linked to poor decision-making, often focused on personal and monetary gains at the others' expense. However, there remains a lack of a systematic examination of how psychopathy is related to the prospect of obtaining monetary gains as a function of social context. Therefore, we conducted a series of meta-analyses to elucidate these relationships. Our findings indicated that elevated levels of psychopathy are relate

Public Health and Prisons: Priorities in the Age of Mass Incarceration.

Mass incarceration is a sociostructural driver of profound health inequalities in the United States. The political and economic forces underpinning mass incarceration are deeply rooted in centuries of the enslavement of people of African descent and the genocide and displacement of Indigenous people and is inextricably connected to labor exploitation, racial discrimination, the criminalization of immigration, and behavioral health problems such as mental illness and substance use disorders. This article focuses on major public health crises and advances in state and federal prisons and discuss

Mode II Behavior of High-Strength Concrete under Monotonic, Cyclic and Fatigue Loading.

An economically efficient yet safe design of concrete structures under high-cycle fatigue loading is a rather complex task. One of the main reasons is the insufficient understanding of the fatigue damage phenomenology of concrete. A promising hypothesis states that the evolution of fatigue damage in concrete at subcritical load levels is governed by a cumulative measure of shear sliding. To evaluate this hypothesis, an experimental program was developed which systematically investigates the fatigue behavior of high-strength concrete under mode II loading using newly adapted punch through shear

The antiviral immunity of ticks against transmitted viral pathogens.

Ticks, being obligate hematophagous arthropods, are exposed to various blood-borne pathogens, including arboviruses. Consequently, their feeding behavior can readily transmit economically important viral pathogens to humans and animals. With this tightly knit vector and pathogen interaction, the replication and transmission of tick-borne viruses (TBVs) must be highly regulated by their respective tick vectors to avoid any adverse effect on the ticks' biological development and viability. Knowledge about the tick-virus interface, although gaining relevant advances in recent years, is advancing

Sex-based differences in right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex roles in fairness norm compliance.

Social norms are a common motivator or de-motivator of behavior through the need of humans to comply with acceptable behaviors of their social groups. Converging evidence from functional neuroimaging and noninvasive brain stimulation studies suggest that the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) is involved in social norm compliance. Extending this view, we suggest that rDLPFC may not act uniformly when men and women face different types of fairness norm compliance situations, and that there may be a sequential update of norm compliance after experiencing punishment. Using High-Definit

The association between heroin expenditure and dopamine transporter availability--a single-photon emission computed tomography study.

One of the consequences of heroin dependency is a huge expenditure on drugs. This underlying economic expense may be a grave burden for heroin users and may lead to criminal behavior, which is a huge cost to society. The neuropsychological mechanism related to heroin purchase remains unclear. Based on recent findings and the established dopamine hypothesis of addiction, we speculated that expenditure on heroin and central dopamine activity may be associated. A total of 21 heroin users were enrolled in this study. The annual expenditure on heroin was assessed, and the availability of the dopami

Risk factors for repeated gonococcal infections: San Francisco, 1990-1992.

Gonococcal (GC) infections are very common and are sustained by a core group of persons who often have repeated GC infections. Identifying individual risk factors for repeated GC infection is essential so that infection control programs can develop better strategies for decreasing the incidence of GC infection. A case-control study among high-risk persons found that being African American, having previous chlamydia infection, and having less than a high-school education were associated with repeated GC infections. Remarkably, measures of sexual behavior and access to health care were not assoc

U.S. transgender women's preferences for microeconomic interventions to address structural determinants of HIV vulnerability: a qualitative assessment.

BACKGROUND: Transgender women in the United States (U.S.) experience a disproportionate burden of HIV infection and challenges to engagement in HIV prevention and care. This excess burden is driven by structural and economic inequities. Microeconomic interventions may be effective strategies for reducing HIV inequities for this population. However, few studies have explored transgender women's preferences for microeconomic interventions to address structural determinants of HIV vulnerability. METHODS: We conducted individual interviews with 19 adult transgender women in 2 U.S. cities (Richmon

Evaluation of Girls Invest, an economic empowerment intervention to address social and economic risks associated with intimate partner violence among adolescent girls in Ibadan, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence and associated negative consequences of intimate partner violence (IPV) (23–49%) against girls has been well-documented in Nigeria. This study evaluated Girls Invest, an app-based economic empowerment intervention, to address social and economic factors associated with IPV among girls ages 15–19 in low-income communities in Ibadan, Nigeria. Satisfaction, acceptability, and feasibility of the intervention were also assessed. METHODS: We conducted a 2-armed randomized-controlled trial (16 schools, 8 schools per arm) among girls ages 15–19 (n = 258) to compare the

Exploring the influence of behavioral factors on depression and anxiety scores during the COVID-19 pandemic: insights from the Virginia statewide COVIDsmart longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been growing concern about the declining mental health and healthy behaviors compared to pre-pandemic levels. Despite this, there is a lack of longitudinal studies that have examined the relationship between health behaviors and mental health during the pandemic. In response, the statewide COVIDsmart longitudinal study was launched. The study's main objective is to better understand the effects of the pandemic on mental health. Findings may provide a foundation for the identification of public health strategies to mitigate future negative imp

Long-term high-fat diet consumption by mice throughout adulthood induces neurobehavioral alterations and hippocampal neuronal remodeling accompanied by augmented microglial lipid accumulation.

High-fat diet (HFD) consumption is generally associated with an increased risk of cognitive and emotional dysfunctions that constitute a sizeable worldwide health burden with profound social and economic consequences. Middle age is a critical time period that affects one's health later in life; pertinently, the prevalence of HFD consumption is increasing among mature adults. Given the growing health-related economic burden imposed globally by increasing rates of noncommunicable diseases in rapidly aging populations, along with the pervasive but insidious health impairments associated with HFD

Model-based economic evaluation of non-pharmacological interventions for fatigue in patients with long-term medical conditions in the UK.

BACKGROUND: Persistent fatigue is a frequent symptom in chronic medical conditions. Systematic reviews of non-pharmacological interventions for fatigue have identified interventions that are effective at reducing fatigue, but there is limited published evidence on the cost-effectiveness of these interventions. OBJECTIVE: To identify non-pharmacological fatigue interventions that have the potential to be cost-effective in patients with long-term medical conditions. DESIGN: Decision analytic modelling with intervention costs estimated from staff time and quality-of-life outcomes mapped from a

Fear of losing money? Aversive conditioning with secondary reinforcers.

Money is a secondary reinforcer that acquires its value through social communication and interaction. In everyday human behavior and laboratory studies, money has been shown to influence appetitive or reward learning. It is unclear, however, if money has a similar impact on aversive learning. The goal of this study was to investigate the efficacy of money in aversive learning, comparing it with primary reinforcers that are traditionally used in fear conditioning paradigms. A series of experiments were conducted in which participants initially played a gambling game that led to a monetary gain.

A concurrently available negative reinforcer robustly decreases cocaine self-administration in male and female rats.

Continued drug-taking despite adverse consequences is hypothesized to be an insidious behavioral hallmark of drug addiction. Although most preclinical research has focused on drug self-administration in the presence of positive punishment, another source of potential adverse consequences is behavioral allocation away from negative reinforcers (i.e., escape/avoid electric shock) and towards drug reinforcers. The goals of the present study were to establish a discrete-trial cocaine-vs-negative reinforcer choice procedure in male and female rats and determine sensitivity of choice behavior to env

Selecting suitable entities to implement blockchain in green agricultural supply chains.

Blockchain implementation in green agricultural supply chains can be undertaken independently by manufacturers or retailers or jointly by both in industrial practices. However, most existing studies predesignate implementation entities artificially and largely ignore firms' endogenous economic willingness, which restricts the practical explanatory capability. Addressing this research gap, this study systematically explores firms' implementation willingness and the optimal selection of blockchain implementers in green agricultural supply chains, thereby offering targeted decision-making insight
