Training of Anesthesiologists in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Case Study From Ecuador.

BACKGROUND: Low- and middle-income countries are currently experiencing a significant shortage of physicians trained in anesthesia. This shortage has been widely attributed to multifactorial causes, including limited local training capacity, workforce migration, underfunded health education systems, and poor national workforce planning. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the state of postgraduate anesthesia training in Ecuador focusing on the structure of current programs and the competencies of their senior residents. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two-phases.

The impact of intersectionality on the experience of medical trainees.

Diverse trainees have different training experiences than non-diverse trainees; however, it has not been demonstrated if the number of diverse traits (DTs) (i.e. intersectionality) contributes to worse experiences. Our objective was to understand if the number of DTs a trainee has impacts their training experience. We distributed a survey to medical trainees at Mass General Brigham from 15/12/23 to 15/4/24. DTs were based on race/ethnicity, gender-identity, sexual orientation, birthplace, disability, and highest parental education. A total of 134 responses were obtained. Respondents with 1 DT

Radiation Oncology Workforce: Supply and Demand.

Since 2017, the specialty of radiation oncology has experienced its fifth consecutive year of decline in residency applicants, resulting in a high number of unmatched positions. The cause of this precipitous decline is multifactorial. Factors cited include concerns about future job opportunities, the decreased pass rate in the ABR radiation biology and physics boards examinations in 2018, and the continued lack of formal exposure to radiation oncology during medical school training. We summarize the issues facing the field of radiation oncology and discuss how we could learn from similar exper

Impact of a formal manual small-incision cataract surgery curriculum in an American ophthalmology residency program.

PURPOSE: Global ophthalmology educational activities often include the ability of ophthalmology residents to partake in low-resource clinical care at home and abroad. Low-resource surgical techniques have become a pillar of education during formalized global ophthalmology fellowships. A formal manual small-incision cataract surgery (MSICS) curriculum was started in the University of Colorado's residency training program to meet the growing demand for this surgical skill and to allow for more sustainable outreach work from our graduates. The survey was conducted to collect evaluations on the va
