Disgust and Other Negative Emotions in the Relationship between Mental Contamination and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Mental contamination (MC) refers to feelings of internal filthiness associated with contamination obsessions. Ego-dystonic memories and thoughts can trigger MC, although it can also be activated by trauma, which is associated with the onset of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research shows that MC, negative emotions and PTSD can occur simultaneously. Despite considerable interest from researchers and clinicians, to the best of our knowledge, no systematic review has been carried out on the relationship between disgust and other negative emotions with MC and PTSD. Therefore, …

Psychological Adaptive Mechanism Maturity Predicts Good Outcomes in Treatment for Refractory PTSD.

Background: Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) severity follows a bell-shaped curve ranging from mild to severe. Those in the severe range often receive the most intensive treatments, including targeted residential rehabilitation stays. These are expensive and welcome ways to improve their effectiveness. We hypothesized that positive change among subjects treated in a 45-day residential rehabilitation format would be associated with the maturity levels of measurable Psychological Adaptive Mechanisms (PAMs), alternately ego defense mechanisms. Methods: In this association study, adult male p…

Psychedelic-assisted therapy research for depression and PTSD has been fast tracked in the United States with the Food and Drugs Administrat … oural Science (CBS)/Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to those multiple challenges, including ego inflation, traumatic memories, and the perceived presence of entities. A methodology aligned with biological mechanisms, psychological processes and therapeutic contexts may be advantageous for improving outcomes. This model expands ACT by integrati …

Growth at adolescence. Clinical correlates.

Several highly significant changes occur within a relatively short period of time during adolescence. Great alteration in physique, developmental progress in thinking, and psychologic gains toward attaining ego identity take place but not always synchronously. Attention is paid to physical changes because they are visible and are of intense concern to adolescents, but physicians and other professionals should remember cognitive and psychosocial growth are affected by physical growth, and vice versa. Often there is a temporary disequilibrium in the relationship of these three areas of growth, a…

Psychedelic Experiences and Finitude in Serious Illness: A Qualitative Synthesis.

CONTEXT: People living with serious illness frequently experience intense existential suffering related to awareness of finitude. Psychedeli … acilitated experiences of transcendence, including symbolic encounters with death, expansion of the ego's boundaries, spiritual experiences of connection and unity, and emotionally challenging experiences. These experiences enabled the reconstruction of personal narratives and the reinterpretation of suffering as transformative. In the post-experience …

Three principles of mental functioning in psychoanalytic theory and practice.

In this essay I have reformulated the relationship of the pleasure principle, reality principle, and Nirvana principle. I have linked this conception of the three principles of mental functioning to the idea of the paranoid-schizoid position. And I have attempted to demonstrate the utility of these various notions for illuminating the analyst's sleepiness during analytic sessions.

Unrealistic representations of "the self": A cognitive neuroscience assessment of anosognosia for memory deficit.

Three cognitive components may play a crucial role in both memory awareness and in anosognosia for memory deficit (AMD): (1) a personal data base (PDB), i.e., a memory store that contains "semantic" representations about the self, (2) monitoring processes (MPs) and (3) an explicit evaluation system (EES), or comparator, that assesses and binds the representations stored in the PDB with information obtained from the environment. We compared both the behavior and the functional connectivity (as assessed by resting-state fMRI) of AMD patients with aware patients and healthy controls. We found tha

Predictors of withdrawal: possible precursors of avoidant personality disorder.

Relations of avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) with shyness and inhibition suggest that a precursor of AvPD is withdrawal. Using a sample of 4.5- to 7-year-olds studied four times, 2 years apart, four and three classes of children differing in trajectories of mother- and teacher-reported withdrawal, respectively, were identified. Mothers and teachers generally did not agree on children's trajectories but the pattern of findings in the two contexts did not differ markedly. The mother-identified high and declining withdrawal class, in comparison with less withdrawn classes, and the teacher-id
