In the submitted case-report the authors describe a combination of a reconstruction operation with an orthopaedic approach to a devastating injury of the shoulder and elbow in a 26-year-old patient after an electric current injury. The total extent of the skin damage was 13% T.B.S.A. with localization on the right side of the chest, right arm, left elbow and shoulder. After fascial excisions the proximal part of the humerus was amputated with fixation by means of cerclage to the scapula. This defect was covered with the musculus latissimus dorsi flap and the defect on the elbow was covered by

OBJECTIVE: To review the injury mechanism and the treatment progress of terrible triad of the elbow, and to analyze the direction of further research.
METHODS: Related literature concerning terrible triad of the elbow was extensively reviewed and comprehensively analyzed.
RESULTS: The main treatment of terrible triad of the elbow is operation. The ultimate goal of treatment is to reconstruct sufficient stability of the elbow. The treatment includes fixation of the coronoid by suture, screw or plate; fixation of radial head by screw and plate, partial or complete replacement of the radial hea

The usual terrible triad of the elbow consists of posterior dislocation of the elbow, radial head fracture and coronoid fracture. We describe a new variant of the terrible triad of the elbow consisting of fracture of the capitellum involving the full length of the trochlea and posterolateral dislocation of the elbow associated with coronoid fracture (type 1 Regan-Morrey). A 25-year-old girl was brought to the emergency ward with the history of having jumped from the third floor with an intention of committing suicide. She sustained multiple fractures, i.e, fracture ribs, bilateral intra-articu

Ipsilateral humerus and forearm fractures, or 'floating elbow,' are high-energy injuries, uncommon in children and usually due to falls or motor vehicle accidents. Early models of washing machines were associated with various reports of upper extremity injuries in children, mostly occurring when the child attempted to remove clothes from a spinning machine. Some of these accidents resulted in serious injuries, including amputation, but have become considerably less common with the introduction of improved safety features in modern appliances. We describe the successful management of a child wi

Background and objective Brachial plexus injuries more commonly affect the younger generation who constitute the productive workforce. The patients who sustain avulsion injuries of the brachial plexus are more often involved in high-velocity accidents. The avulsion injuries are surgically managed by nerve transfers. This study aimed to evaluate the demography of brachial plexus avulsion injuries. Materials and methods This retrospective study was conducted in January 2013 and included 21 patients treated from January 2007 to December 2011. Results Of the 21 patients, 20 were male and the most

The elbow is the second most commonly dislocated large joint and occurs with more frequency in sports men and women than in the general population. Understanding the normal anatomy, the mechanism of injury and the pathoanatomy of the injury to the soft tissue restraints about the elbow are important for obtaining a good result. Most elbow dislocations are stable once reduced and may be treated conservatively. However, if the elbow remains unstable then surgical treatment of the medial and lateral collateral ligament complexes is recommended. Repair using tensionable anchors allows the surgeon

A 34 years old male, labourer by occupation was brought to our trauma centre in an inebriated state with a history of fall from a height of approximately 10 feet. He complained of pain in the right elbow. A complete examination of the affected upper limb revealed an ipsilateral anterior shoulder dislocation and a posterior elbow dislocation with no other concomitant injuries. Both the dislocations were reduced conservatively and the patient was successfully managed. The patient is absolutely fine now, 6 months post his dislocation and has resumed back to his work. This case has been presented

PURPOSE: To report the clinical outcomes of thoracodorsal nerve (TDN) transfers to the triceps motor branches for elbow extension restoration in patients with partial brachial plexus injuries (BPI).
METHODS: Eight male patients of mean age 23 years and suffering from a partial BPI underwent direct coaptation of the TDN to the nerve of the upper medial and long heads of the triceps, an average 6 months after their accident.
RESULTS: Seven patients achieved M4 elbow extension strength and one patient M3, according to the BMRC scale, after a mean follow-up of 21 months.
DISCUSSION: Direct TDN

INTRODUCTION: Chondromalacia of the trochlear notch and stress fracture of olecranon are uncommon injuries in the throwing athletes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report an 18-year-old high school pitcher who had persistent postero-lateral elbow pain after a healed olecranon stress fracture of the right elbow. Diagnostic arthroscopy revealed chondromalacia of the trochlear notch.
RESULTS: After treatment with arthroscopic drilling and abrasion chondroplasty, he returned to competitive pitching 1 year later postsurgery. This rare association between chondromalacia and stress fracture of the olecr

UNLABELLED: Radial head subluxation, known as pulled elbow or nursemaid's elbow, is a common presentation to the Paediatric Emergency Department (PED). Fifty per cent of children present following an unwitnessed injury or with an atypical history. Furthermore, examination can be difficult in an upset or frightened child meaning the precise location of the injury is not always easily identifiable. Many children receive upper limb x-rays unnecessarily and others undergo attempted reduction for suspected pulled elbow when a fracture is the cause of their pain.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ability

BACKGROUND: A 'terrible triad injury of the elbow' (TTIE) refers to an injury pattern involving posterior dislocation of the ulnohumeral joint, fracture of the radial head, and fracture of the coronoid process of the ulna. It is a complex injury to the elbow joint and can result in long-term elbow instability, pain, stiffness, and arthritis. In specific cases, it may be treated conservatively, but in most circumstances, surgical stabilization is advised. The 'drop sign' is an objective static radiographically measured ulnohumeral distance of ≥4 mm seen intraoperatively and postoperatively. The treatment of comminuted fractures of the radial head with concomitant injuries of the ulnar complex by resection of the radial head usually does not provide satisfactory long-term results. Other than joint instability in the elbow and a limited range of motion, radius proximalisation in the sense of ulnocarpal impingement, osteoarthritis and pain in the elbow have been described. Between 1995 and 1997, 11 radial head prostheses were implanted in ten patients who had sustained a comminuted fracture of the radial head with concomitant injury to the ulnar complex. A follow-up survey was condu

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar fractures associated with ipsilateral forearm fractures, aptly termed as "floating elbow" is a rare injury in children after a fall from height. The various authors have reported their results with conservative treatment of one or both injuries to aggressive emergency operative fixation of both components.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: During a period of three years, the author managed four cases of floating elbow in children. All cases were managed by closed reduction and pinning of both components of the injury.
RESULTS: All patients recovered full elbow range of motion
