The mechanisms of electrical neuromodulation.

The central and peripheral nervous systems are specialized to conduct electrical currents that underlie behaviour. When this multidimensional electrical system is disrupted by degeneration, damage, or disuse, externally applied electrical currents may act to modulate neural structures and provide therapeutic benefit. The administration of electrical stimulation can exert precise and multi-faceted effects at cellular, circuit and systems levels to restore or enhance the functionality of the central nervous system by providing an access route to target specific cells, fibres of passage, neurotra

Dynamic Conformal Neural Electroactive Biointerfacing Sustains Bioelectronic Coupling for Spinal Cord Repair.

Stable bioelectronic coupling in mechanically active tissues remains challenging because conventional interfaces rely on static architectures that cannot dissipate deformation-induced interfacial stress, resulting in progressive contact failure and signal instability. Here, we report an injectable magnetoelectric hydrogel that forms a dynamic conformal neural electroactive tissue-biointerface (DyCONNECT) with deformable neural tissues. By integrating polydopamine-modified magnetoelectric nanoparticles within a dynamically adaptive conductive network, DyCONNECT combines tissue adhesion, electri

Model Structures and Electron Transfer Properties of Conductive Nickel-Organic Nanoribbons in Cable Bacteria.

Cable bacteria are multicellular bacteria capable of centimeter-scale conduction through a regular fiber network embedded in their cell envelope. The conductivity of these fibers is extremely high for biological materials and rivals that of the best synthetic conductive polymers, but the underlying electron transport mechanism remains elusive. Recent microscopic and spectroscopic evidence indicates that each fiber embeds a bundle of intertwined nanoribbons as the conductive conduit. Each nanoribbon consists of a one-dimensional nickel-organic framework, built from stacked nickel bis(1,2-dithio

Catechol-Functionalized Poly(ionic liquid)-Based Self-Healing Adhesive Hydrogel for Repairable Wearable Sensor and Self-Powered System.

Conductive hydrogels have risen as a promising material for flexible wearable sensors. However, achieving a hydrogel that simultaneously possesses high mechanical properties, conductivity, self-healing ability, and adhesion remains a challenge. Herein, we developed a dual-network ionic conductive hydrogel (P-P(C-A)-PA) by incorporating poly(vinyl alcohol) and a copolymer of catechol-modified ionic liquid and acrylamide. The optimized hydrogel exhibited outstanding mechanical performance (stress: 883 kPa, strain: 1120%), self-healing efficiency (stress recovery of 58.6% ± 4.6% and toughness rec

Simultaneous Determination of Six Inorganic Anions in Animal Whole Blood Using Ion Chromatography With Suppressed Conductivity Detection.

A sensitive and robust ion chromatography method with suppressed conductivity detection (IC-CD) was developed and validated for the simultaneous quantification of six inorganic anions (fluoride, nitrite, bromide, nitrate, phosphate, and sulfate) in animal whole blood. The method employed a carbonate-bicarbonate eluent (4.5-mM Na2CO3, 0.8-mM NaHCO3) at a flow of 1 mL/min and an anion-exchange column (4 × 250 mm, Dionex IonPac AS23 RFIC) to achieve baseline resolution of all analytes within a 30-min run. Sample preparation involved protein precipitation with ice-cold methanol followed by centrif

Visible Light-Rectified Chemiresistive Sensing in Two-Dimensional Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Photo-activated chemiresistive gas sensors using two-dimensional conductive metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) hold great promise for low-power, real-time environmental monitoring; however, how visible light modulates sensing responses toward gas molecules with different characteristics remains poorly understood. Here, we systematically investigate the gas-sensing behavior of four representative 2D c-MOFs toward oxidizing and reducing gases under red and blue light illumination, respectively. A pronounced light-rectified sensing behavior is observed across all four materials, with the respon

Dual functional rGO/Fe3O4/PANI nanocomposite anodes for enhanced performance of microbial fuel cells.

A dual chamber microbial fuel cells was developed using biomass derived reduced graphene oxide (E-rGO) synthesized from Ensete ventricosum corm waste as an anode material for simultaneous bioelectricity generation and heavy metal remediation. To enhance electrochemical performance, an E-rGO/Fe3O4/PANI NC anode was fabricated and evaluated for the removal of Cr (VI) and Pb (II) from wastewater. Incorporation of Fe3O4 NP and polyaniline improved electrical conductivity, surface characteristics, and interfacial charge transfer properties. Structural, morphological, optical, and thermal properties

Intrinsically Adhesive and Conductive Hydrogel Bridging the Bioelectronic-Tissue Interface for Biopotentials Recording.

Achieving high-quality biopotential signal recordings requires soft and stable interfaces between soft tissues and bioelectronic devices. Traditional bioelectronics, typically rigid and dependent on medical tape or sutures, lead to mechanical mismatches and inflammatory responses. Existing conducting polymer-based bioelectronics offer tissue-like softness but lack intrinsic adhesion, limiting their effectiveness in creating stable, conductive interfaces. Here, we present an intrinsically adhesive and conductive hydrogel with a tissue-like modulus and strong adhesion to various substrates. Adhe

Fully physical crosslinked BSA-based conductive hydrogels with high strength and fast self-recovery for human motion and wireless electrocardiogram sensing.

The emergence of protein hydrogel sensors has attracted intensive attention because of their biocompatibility and biodegradability, and potential application in wearable electronics. However, natural protein hydrogel sensors commonly exhibited low conductivity, weak mechanical strength, and unsatisfactory self-recovery performance. Herein, a fully physical crosslinked conductive BSA-MA-PPy/P(AM-co-AA)/Fe3+ hydrogel based on methacrylic anhydride (MA)-modified and polypyrrole (PPy)-functionalized bovine serum albumin (BSA) introduced into poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (P(AM-co-AA)) matrix wa

Nanoengineered Sprayable Therapy for Treating Myocardial Infarction.

We report the development, as well as the in vitro and in vivo testing, of a sprayable nanotherapeutic that uses surface engineered custom-designed multiarmed peptide grafted nanogold for on-the-spot coating of an infarcted myocardial surface. When applied to mouse hearts, 1 week after infarction, the spray-on treatment resulted in an increase in cardiac function (2.4-fold), muscle contractility, and myocardial electrical conductivity. The applied nanogold remained at the treatment site 28 days postapplication with no off-target organ infiltration. Further, the infarct size in the mice that re

Differences in nerve excitability properties across upper limb sensory and motor axons.

OBJECTIVE: The excitability of motor and sensory axons of the main upper limb nerves were compared to characterise the differences between nerves and provide a guide for future studies in human diseases with median neuropathy at the wrist. METHODS: Axonal excitability studies were undertaken on median and ulnar motor (APB and ADM) and sensory axons (D2 and D5) and the superficial radial axons (D1) using a threshold tracking technique. RESULTS: Compared to the median, ulnar motor axons had reduced early depolarising threshold electrotonus (TEd40(10-20 ms) p = 0.02) and superexcitability (p =

Ultrasensitive and Wearable Carbon Hybrid Fiber Devices as Robust Intelligent Sensors.

The growing applications of wearable electronics, electronic textiles, and biomedical devices have sparked explosive demand for high-performance flexible sensors. Herein, we report a facile approach for fabricating a highly sensitive carbon hybrid fiber, which is composed of a graphene fiber skeleton and carbon nanotube (CNT) branches. In this hierarchical fiber, in situ grown CNTs prohibit the stacking of graphene sheets and bridge graphene layers simultaneously, making the hybrid fiber fluffy and conductive. Due to the well-designed architecture, the assembled fiber sensor exhibits satisfact

Extremely elastic and conductive N-doped graphene sponge for monitoring human motions.

Due to the extraordinary properties of great elasticity, ultralow density, and good electrical conduction, macroporous graphene bulk materials are the promising candidate as the sensing materials for flexible electronics. Although a large number of progresses have been made, the piezoresistive effect of graphene does not completely meet requirements for various applications yet. Herein, the nitrogen-doped graphene sponge (NGS) material with well-ordered and uniform macroscopic porous structure in long range has been developed by a simple and low-cost strategy by combining hydrothermal and ther

Novel Methodologies in Regional Anesthesia for Knee Arthroplasty.

Maximizing analgesia is critical following joint arthroplasty because postoperative pain is a major barrier to adequate physical therapy. Continuous peripheral nerve blocks have been the mainstay for acute pain management in this population; however, this and similar techniques are limited by their duration of action. Cryoneurolysis and peripheral nerve stimulation are two methodologies used for decades to treat chronic pain. With the advent of portable ultrasound devices and percutaneous administration equipment, both procedures may now be suitable for treatment of acute pain. This article re
