[The cerebrovascular effects of motion sickness].

In rabbits with implanted electrodes, a diminished reactivity of vascular vessels to functional tests of physical and chemical nature was revealed although the level of cerebral blood flow generally increased. This suggests a reduction of compensatory capacity of the brain circulation system which can result in a change of the brain tissue water balance under the effects leading to an alteration of cerebral outflow and sometimes accompanying seasickness. This was corroborated by the evidence on a change in cerebral tissue impedance under the combined effect of antiorthostatism and seasickness,

Vestibular, olfactory, and vibratory responses of nucleus basalis prosencephali neurons in pigeons.

Evoked multiple unit responses were recorded through chronically implanted electrodes from the nucleus basalis prosencephali of the pigeon (Columba livia) upon vibratory stimulation of the beak-tip and airborne auditory stimulation, thus confirming earlier anatomical and physiological findings. Electrical stimulation of the olfactory nerve led to similar short latency responses. A specific directional sensitivity to rotatory vestibular stimulation was observed. Pitch motions of the head in the downward direction evoked the most pronounced multi-unit responses. These results support the suggest

Spinal cord stimulation as a tool for physiological research.

The use of spinal cord stimulation for alleviation of disabilities due to motor neuron lesions has provided the opportunity to explore a new approach to measurement of spinal cord physiology. Externalized leads of epidural electrodes provide the possibility of recording evoked spinal cord activity, while both externalized or implanted leads can be used to study cortical evoked responses and twitches induced by spinal cord stimulation. The use of such electrophysiological techniques can be expected to expand greatly the applicability of the technique for alleviating motor disabilities, through

Permanent programmable pacemakers in the management of recurrent tachycardias.

Patient reports are presented to indicate the application of standard implanted programmable pacemakers with endocardial electrodes for long-term overdrive suppression of recurrent ventricular tachycardia, and their adaptability to non-invasively induced burts of rapid ventricular pacing to cardiovert that arrhythmia. In carefully preselected patients with bradycardia-tachycardia syndrome, this type of programmable pacemaker may also be used to convert paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia by short bursts of rapid ventricular pacing. In addition, the advantage of non-invasively instituting o

Peroneal nerve conduction velocity after chronic electrical stimulation.

The effects of electric stimulation on nerve conduction velocity of the peroneal nerve via surgically implanted electrodes was evaluated in a group of nine hemiplegic patients. After a mean duration of 25 months nerve conduction velocity averaged 47.3 meters/sec in the uninvolved and 46.1 meters/sec in the stimulated (paretic) extremity. In a control group of ten hemiplegic subjects who did not receive stimulation, nerve conduction velocity averaged 43.1 meters/sec in the hemiplegic leg, and 41.3 meters/sec in the uninvolved leg. These differences were not statistically significant. Maximum do

Penile pressures and muscle activity associated with erection and ejaculation in the dog.

A needle-tipped polyvinyl catheter or subminiature pressure transducer was implanted in the corpus cavernosum penis (CCP), corpus spongiosum penis (CSP), or bulbus glandis to determine the pressure during coitus in 42 dogs. Silver ring electrodes were implanted in the ischiocavernosus (IC) and bulbospongiosus (BS) muscles to monitor the electromyographic (EMG) activity of these muscles. The CCP pressure increased from 26 mmHg in the quiescent state to 161 mmHg at mild erection of the penis in the presence of a receptive female. During the intromission phase of coitus, the mean peak CCP pressur

ChroMOS: a "microwire-like" CMOS neural probe for chronic neural recordings in mice.

Achieving stable and continuous monitoring of signals of numerous single neurons in the brain faces the conflicting challenge of increasing the microelectrode count while minimizing cross-sectional shank dimensions to reduce tissue damage, foreign-body-reaction and maintain signal quality. Passive probes need to route each microelectrode individually to external electronics, thus increasing shank size and tissue-damage as the number of electrodes grows. Active complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) probes overcome the limitation in electrode count and density with on-probe frontend, ad

Posterior semi-circular canal electrode misplacement in Goldenhar's syndrome.

Literature documents the incidence of electrode misplacement within the range of 0.2% to 5.8% with the superior SCC as the most common site, followed by the vestibule. In this report, we present the finding of electrode misplacement in the posterior SCC in a child with Goldenhar syndrome which was subsequently corrected. This child with bilateral congenital profound SNHL presented for unilateral cochlear implant surgery. Intraoperatively, the lateral SCC bulge, stapes, oval window, round window niche and pyramid were noted absent, leading to a surgical decision in favour of a subtotal petrosec

[Myocardial ischemia caused by ICD electrodes?].

We report on a 65 year old man, in whom an ICD was implanted. Seven months later we found a remarkable close relation between the tip of the ICD electrode and the distal part of the left anterior descending artery (LAD). LAD seems to be compressed from electrode during systole. This is possibly the cause of an ischemia in myocardial scintigraphy.

Trends in Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) procedures vary by use of microelectrode recording (MER) and by unilateral or bilateral implantation. Our goal was to quantify national, regional, and state-level trends in total procedures, MER utilization, and unilateral vs. bilateral electrode implantation. METHODS: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services database was queried for patients undergoing DBS procedures from 2013 to 2023 yielding 27,846 total patients. Use of MER, unilateral vs. bilateral DBS electrode implantation, and procedure location were extracted. Data were analyzed using

Novel microscope-based visual display and nasopharyngeal registration for auditory brainstem implantation: a feasibility study in an ex vivo model.

PURPOSE: An auditory brainstem implant (ABI) represents an alternative for patients with profound hearing loss who are constrained from receiving a cochlear implant. The positioning of the ABI electrode influences the patient's auditory capacity and, therefore, quality of life and is challenging even with available intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring. This work aims to provide and assess the feasibility of visual-spatial assistance for ABI positioning. METHODS: The pose of the forceps instrument that grasps the electrode was electromagnetically navigated and interactively projected

Morbidity and infection in combined subdural grid and strip electrode investigation for intractable epilepsy.

The coverage of large surface areas of the brain for electrographic monitoring purposes necessitates a craniotomy to achieve comprehensive sampling. We undertook a review and prospective analysis over 3 years of 38 patients undergoing craniotomy for electrode implantation. The indication for invasive monitoring was to determine candidacy for resective surgery in patients whose seizure focus was not well localized by scalp electroencephalography and other noninvasive testing. Prophylactic cultures from the epidural space were obtained at electrode removal. There were five positive epidural cult

Design of an intracranial electrode for monitoring.

Direct recording of the electric brain activity gives more information than conventional electroencephalogram. Several authors have designed a variety of electrodes in order to solve the different problems of electrocorticography but in our opinion none of these fulfil the following features: easy implantation and extraction with minimal trauma; flexibility to allow placement over regions of the brain cortex that are difficult to access (interhemispheric fissure, medial aspect of the temporal lobe, frontobasal region, etc.), good quality recording. A multiple contact electrode which we think m

A Combinatory Therapy of Metformin and Dexamethasone Reduces the Foreign Body Reaction to Intraneural Electrodes.

Neural electrodes used for bidirectional communication between the nervous system and external devices like prosthetic limbs have advanced in neuroprosthetic applications. However, their effectiveness is hindered by the foreign body reaction, a natural immune response causing inflammation and fibrosis around the implanted device. This process involves protein adsorption, immune cell recruitment, cytokine release, and fibroblast activation, leading to a fibrous capsule formation and a decrease in electrode functionality. Anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic strategies have the potential to dimini

Multi-modal connectome analysis of the stereoelectroencephalography implantation effect: a case report.

Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) may induce seizure reduction in some patients, known as the implantation effect, but its network mechanism remains unclear. We investigated whether SEEG electrode insertion is associated with measurable brain network reorganisation using longitudinal multi-modal analysis. We studied a patient with drug-resistant right temporal lobe epilepsy who experienced seizure reduction after SEEG implantation and subsequently underwent anterior temporal lobectomy, achieving ILAE class 1a seizure freedom at 6-month follow-up. Structural connectivity from diffusion MRI, r

Long-Term Cochlear Implant Sensitivity in Patients With Far Advanced Otosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implantation in otosclerosis patients presents unique surgical and programming challenges. The success and satisfaction of these patients heavily depend on precise speech processor fitting. Increased bone growth and tissue mass associated with otosclerosis can hinder electrical current flow, adding resistance to stimuli transmission to ganglion cells. This study aimed to evaluate mid- and long-term cochlear implant fitting in otosclerosis patients compared to a control group. METHODS: This was a monocentric retrospective case-control study conducted at a tertiary referral

Staged deep brain stimulation for refractory craniofacial dystonia with blepharospasm: case report and physiology.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: We report the intraoperative results, subsequent course, and 1-year follow-up evaluation of a patient with medication-refractory craniofacial dystonia for whom we planned bilateral globus pallidus internus (GPi) deep brain stimulation (DBS) implantation but delayed the left GPi DBS implantation because of robust intraoperative effects of right GPi DBS. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old patient had a 5-year history of progressively severe, bilateral craniofacial dystonia with blepharospasm (Meige's syndrome) that was refractory to medications and to botulinum toxin

Abnormal Synchronization Between Cortical Delta Power and Ripples in Hippocampal Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Discriminating between epileptogenic and physiological ripples in the hippocampus is important for identifying epileptogenic (EP) zones; however, distinguishing these ripples on the basis of their waveforms is difficult. We hypothesized that the nocturnal synchronization of hippocampal ripples and cortical delta power could be used to classify epileptogenic and physiological ripples in the hippocampus. METHODS: We enrolled 38 patients with electrodes implanted in the hippocampus or parahippocampal gyrus between April 2014 and March 2023 at our institution. We divided 11 patients (1

Slow Wave Sleep Deficits in the Flinders Sensitive Line Rodent Model of Depression: Effects of Medial Forebrain Bundle Deep-Brain Stimulation.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is an affective disorder typically accompanied by sleep disturbances. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) is an emerging intervention for treatment-resistant depression, but its effect on sleep has not been closely examined. Here we aimed to characterise sleep deficits in the Flinders sensitive line, an established rodent model of depression, and investigate the consequences of MFB stimulation on sleep-related phenotypes. Rats were implanted with bilateral stimulation electrodes in the MFB, surface electrodes to record electrocortic
