[Water-electrolyte and acid-base changes during extracorporeal circulation].

Changes in fluid, electrolyte and acid-base balance were evaluated in 8 patients during extracorporeal circulation. H2O increase and osmolarity and colloid osmotic pressure decrease, due to priming and perfusion technique used for cardiopulmonary by pass, were found. Mild respiratory alkalosis was also present. K+ serum, because of KCL supplements, was always maintained within the normal values, while Na+ serum concentration was low, despite of large amounts of Na+ infused during perfusion. After examination of disturbances in fluid, electrolyte and acid-base balance, the Authors report the pe

Acid-base and electrolyte disturbances in dogs with gastric dilatation-volvulus.

Blood samples from 57 dogs with gastric dilatation-volvulus were analyzed for acid-base, blood gas (P02, Pco2), and electrolyte abnormalities. Although a variety of pH, blood gas, and electrolyte disturbances were recorded, metabolic acidosis and hypokalemia were common findings. Three dogs had hypochloremic-hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis. Attempts to correlate the severity of pH, blood gas, and electrolyte derangements with duration of disease, heart rate, respiratory rate, or a mathematical index based on the sum of these variables were unsuccessful. It was concluded that acid-base and flui

[Role of hormonal compounds in regulating electrolyte metabolism in emotional stress].

The emotional stress simulated by examinations taken by medical students led to a decrease of sodium concentration in blood. This was a result of a simultaneous increase of mineralocorticoids and a decrease of glucocorticoids responsible for sodium concentration in blood. Both inhibition of glucocorticoids and stimulation of mineralocorticoids were associated with a high activity of plasma renin and a low concentration of adrenocorticotropic hormone.

Acid-base and electrolyte alterations associated with salivary loss in the pony.

Esophageal fistulas were made in 6 ponies to evaluate whole blood acid-base values and serum and salivary electrolyte alterations associated … alosis. The alkalosis probably resulted from renal compensation of electrolyte imbalances. Salivary electrolytes were in high concentrations, probably because of increased salivary flow rates. Initial saliva was rich in Na, Cl, and K, but progressive reduction in salivary Na and Cl concentrations occurred during the 5-day collection period. These electrolyte s …

Effect of acetazolamide in blood acid-base and electrolyte values in dogs.

The effects of acetazolamide administration on arterial blood acid-base equilibrium and electrolyte concentrations were evaluated in 13 clinical patients and in a 4-week experiment in 6 conditioned mixed-breed dogs. Findings included persistent acidemia characterized by hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis, elevated partial pressure of oxygen, and mild depletion of potassium. Changes in the partial pressure of carbon dioxide were variable, and there was no change in plasma sodium concentration or osmolality. Measured disturbances were apparent within 12 hours of the commencement of acetazolamide

[Conductometry in determining measurements of urine electrolyte concentration (author's transl)].

1. Na+ concentration, measured by the flame photometer, cryoscopic osmolality, and the specific electrolyte conductivity of urine show a close statistical correlation if only small amounts of a molecular disperse solution are dissolved in the urine. 2. Since conductance of a fluid is an expression of its ion concentration, better relationships exist between Na+ concentration and conductivity than between Na+ concentration and osmolality. 3. In the presence of large amounts of glucose in the urine, osmolality no longer represents the electrolyte content, and therefore no longer serves as a para

Central pontine myelinolysis. Two cases with associated electrolyte disturbance.

Two patients with central pontine myelinolysis are described. Both were middle aged women presenting with a history of protracted vomiting and drowsiness. Hyponatraemia (serum sodium 96 to 100 mmol/L) was a feature in both patients. No underlying malignancy, alcoholism, malnutrition or other serious disease was identified. Correction of electrolyte abnormalities was accompanied by deterioration in level of consciousness and development of a neurological syndrome characterized by quadriparesis, dysphasia and mutism. Death followed and histopathological examination confirmed classical myelinolys

[Electrolyte metabolism in alcoholic patients during therapy and prolonged abstinence].

The author studied the dynamics of development of the Na+ and K+ content in the blood plasma, erythrocytes and urine in 82 patients with chronic alcoholism during the period of active antialcohol treatment. It was established that the content of Na in the blood plasma was decreased while its excretion with urine increased. Signs of mineral-corticoid insufficiency remained even 2--3 years following treatment.

Circling behavior in rats with 6-hydroxydopamine or electrolytic nigral lesions,

Unilateral destruction of dopaminergic cell bodies in the substantia nigra zona compacta (SNC) was performed in rats using either electrocoagulation or chemical lesioning (6-hydroxydopamine, 6-OHDA). Neostriatal dopamine concentration ipsilateral to an electrolytic lesion was 34% of the contralateral side 2-3 weeks after operation; serotonin and noradrenaline brain levels were not altered. In contrast, dopamine and noradrenaline forebrain concentrations ipsilateral to a 6-OHDA lesion were 20 and 31%, respectively, of the contralateral side. After 6-OHDA, dopamine concentrations in the ipsilate

Azolimine: a nonsteroidal antagonist of the effects of mineralocorticoids on renal electrolyte excretion.

Azolimine, CL 90,748, an imidazolidinone, displayed the capacity to antagonize the effects of mineralocorticoids on renal electrolyte excretion in several animal models. Although large doses of azolimine produced natriuresis in adrenalectomized rats in the absence of exogenous mineralocorticoid, its effectiveness was greater in the presence of a steroid agonist. However, in conscious dogs given an infusion of saline plus dextrose, azolimine was only effective when desoxycorticosterone (DCA) was administered. The drug, therefore, may not be a pure competitive antagonist of mineralocorticoid, bu

[Action of ornid and papavperine on the biopotential and electrolytic balance of the vascular wall].

The influence of ornidium (bretylan) and papaverine on the biopotential and electrolytes metabolism in the vascular wall was studied in tests with cats. With their single administration ornidium (30 mg/kg) and papaverine (10 mg/kg) were found to increase the electrongegative biopotential and the potassium content in the vasculr wall. Ornidum causes the amount of magnesium to augment in the wall of venous vessels and of calcium--in the abdominal aorta. When used course-wise papaverine dose not produce any changes in the biopotential, but increases the potassium content in the venous vessels and…

Electrolyte disturbances in beer drinkers. A specific "hypo-osmolality syndrome".

A syndrome is described which affects subjects whose consumption of beer is considerable but who take no or little ordinary food. The symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, and muscular weakness; the biochemical changes are hyponatraemia and hypokalaemia. The disorder is rapidly resolved by stay in hospital. Beer is poor in Na (1-2 meq. per litre). Consequently these patients' intake of Na was low, and the production of urea was very low.
