Comparison of methods for assessing snoring.

Objective measurements of several sound level indices were made on 32 subjects referred because of snoring and who subsequently underwent uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). The measurements were repeated approximately 6 months post-UPPP. The indices were compared with the subjective assessment of snoring by both the subject and his/her bed partner. Correlations between objective and subjective assessments were generally weak and were strongest when the supine posture only was considered. The index which correlated best with subjective assessment was the level which 1% of the sound level samples

Autorotation test abnormalities of the horizontal and vertical vestibulo-ocular reflexes in panic disorder.

Patients with panic disorder often describe dizziness as a disturbing symptom, with more severe episodes reported than in other psychiatric populations. Nineteen patients diagnosed as having a panic disorder were tested for vestibulo-ocular (VOR) abnormalities with the Vestibular Autorotation Test (VAT), a computerized test of the high-frequency (2 to 6 Hz) VOR. The patients were unselected for the presence or absence of balance disorders. Results showed VOR abnormalities, relative to a normal population, in the horizontal and/or vertical VORs of all 19 patients. Vestibulo-ocular reflex asymme

Clinical and electrophysiological features of tilted disc syndrome.

Nine patients with tilted disc syndrome were examined psychophysically and electrophysiologically. Visual field defects did not correspond to fundus abnormalities in half of the eyes. Visual evoked responses were more reduced than electroretinogram responses. These results indicate that associated visual field defects and impairment of visual acuity were related not only to a localized staphylomatous ectasia of the posterior globe but also to a lesion of the inner retinal layer, optic nerve, or more proximal visual pathway. This suggests that a developmental abnormality in the embryonic retina

Low-frequency harmonic acceleration as a test of labyrinthine function: basic methods and illustrative cases.

These preliminary findings reveal that low-frequency harmonic acceleration can be used to detect unilateral peripheral deficits that agree with caloric findings. However, the responses to sinusoidal acceleration are less variable than the caloric responses and allow one to more closely evaluate changes in pathology with time. Therefore, it appears that harmonic acceleration provides additional information that is useful in confirming other test results and that a complete otoneurologic evaluation should include this type of rotational testing.

Dissecting beta-state changes during timed movement preparation in Parkinson's disease.

An emerging perspective describes beta-band (15-28 Hz) activity as consisting of short-lived high-amplitude events that only appear sustained in conventional measures of trial-average power. This has important implications for characterising abnormalities observed in beta-band activity in disorders like Parkinson's disease. Measuring parameters associated with beta-event dynamics may yield more sensitive measures, provide more selective diagnostic neural markers, and provide greater mechanistic insight into the breakdown of brain dynamics in this disease. Here, we used magnetoencephalography i

Signal identification system for developing rehabilitative device using deep learning algorithms.

Paralyzed patients were increasing day by day. Some of the neurodegenerative diseases like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Brainstem Leison, Stupor and Muscular dystrophy affect the muscle movements in the body. The affected persons were unable to migrate. To overcome from their problem they need some assistive technology with the help of bio signals. Electrooculogram (EOG) based Human Computer Interaction (HCI) is one of the technique used in recent days to overcome such problem. In this paper we clearly check the possibilities of creating nine states HCI by our proposed method. Signals were c

Quantitative Autofluorescence Intensities in Acute Zonal Occult Outer Retinopathy vs Healthy Eyes.

IMPORTANCE: Acute zonal occult outer retinopathy (AZOOR) remains a challenging diagnosis. Early recognition of the disease depends on advances in imaging modalities that can improve phenotyping and contribute to the understanding of the underlying pathogenesis. OBJECTIVES: To expand the range of approaches available to assist in the identification of AZOOR by multimodal imaging and to analyze the fundus lesions by quantifying short-wavelength fundus autofluorescence (quantitative fundus autofluorescence [qAF]) and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANT

A hybrid platform based on EOG and EEG signals to restore communication for patients afflicted with progressive motor neuron diseases.

An efficient alternative channel for communication without overt speech and hand movements is important to increase the quality of life for patients suffering from Amiotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or other illnesses that prevent correct limb and facial muscular responses. Often, such diseases leave the ocular movements preserved for a relatively long time. The aim of this study is to present a new approach for the hybrid system which is based on the recognition of electrooculogram (EOG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) measurements for efficient communication and control. As a first step we show th

Event-related potentials of self-face recognition in children with pervasive developmental disorders.

Patients with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) often have difficulty reading facial expressions and deciphering their implied meaning. We focused on semantic encoding related to face cognition to investigate event-related potentials (ERPs) to the subject's own face and familiar faces in children with and without PDD. Eight children with PDD (seven boys and one girl; aged 10.8+/-2.9 years; one left-handed) and nine age-matched typically developing children (four boys and five girls; aged 11.3+/-2.3 years; one left-handed) participated in this study. The stimuli consisted of three face im

Kjellin's syndrome: fundus autofluorescence, angiographic, and electrophysiologic findings.

OBJECTIVE: Syndromes with genetically determined retinal diseases and concurrent multiple neurologic abnormalities are rare. Kjellin described an autosomal recessive entity with spastic paraplegia, mental retardation, amyotrophia, and macular dystrophy. We sought to further characterize the retinal phenotype and to contrast fundus changes and the genotype to Stargardt's disease in a young patient with progressive Kjellin's syndrome. DESIGN: Observational case report and family genetic study. PATIENTS: One affected and 11 unaffected members of a family with Kjellin's syndrome were investigate

Vitamin A status in relation to electroretinographic and electrooculographic findings in HIV infection.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the electrooculogram (EOG) and an expanded battery of electroretinograms (ERGs) in HIV-infected subjects without retinopathy at two different levels of immunosuppression. Consideration was given to the possible effects of serum levels of vitamin A. METHODS: Two groups of neurologically normal HIV-positive subjects with CD4+ cell counts of <200 (n=17) or >400 (n=19) were contrasted with 20 HIV-negative controls. Rod ERGs, oscillatory potentials and cone ERGs were obtained using ganzfeld stimulation. A sequence of dark- and light-adapted EOG recordings was analyzed to

Ocular neuromyotonia: three case reports with eye movement recordings.

The objective of this article was to evaluate the etiologies, findings, and treatment of ocular neuromyotonia (ONM) in three case reports. The etiologies of ONM were determined by the histories, neuroradiologic tests, or biopsies. Clinical observations, videotaping, and electronic eye movement recordings documented the eye movement abnormalities. Intermittent diplopia developed several years after myelography with thorium dioxide (Thorotrast), radiation treatment for a pituitary tumor, and radiotherapy for medulloblastoma of the posterior fossa. All of the patients had intermittent, variable t

Dysmature EEG pattern in EEGs of preterm infants with cognitive impairment: maturation arrest caused by prolonged mild CNS depression.

The significance of mild sustained brain injury in the pathogenesis of perinatal brain damage was investigated using serial EEG recordings performed on 102 early preterm infants surviving beyond 2 years of age. Sixteen infants (16%) elicited mild depression of background EEG activities in the neonatal period. Of nine infants with mild depression of prolonged duration (more than 3 weeks), five (56%) were diagnosed as having cognitive impairment in the follow up study. Four showed no signs of cerebral palsy, while one had cerebral palsy. The infants with cognitive impairment showed mild prolonge

Immunoperoxidase study of the endolymphatic sac in Menière's disease.

A growing body of evidence suggests that some cases of Menière's disease may be mediated by immune mechanisms. Because endolymphatic sac dysfunction is believed to be an underlying cause of Menière's disease, this study used immunohistochemical techniques to demonstrate the presence of immune complex deposition in the sacs of patients with Menière's disease. Positive immunoglobulin G (IgG) staining was noted in 10 of 23 sac biopsies from Menière's patients, with 2 specimens showing perivascular deposition. Only 1 of 5 control specimens was only slightly positive for IgG. Clinical correlation s

Prominent eye movements during NREM sleep and REM sleep behavior disorder associated with fluoxetine treatment of depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The clinical polysomnographic (PSG) reports of 2,650 consecutive adults studied during 41 months were reviewed retrospectively to identify all patients treated with fluoxetine or tricyclic antidepressants. The PSG reports of four other adult groups were also reviewed: periodic limb movement (PLM) disorder (n = 28); sleep terror/sleepwalking (ST/SW) (n = 54); rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) (n = 70); patients with clinically unremarkable sleep during two consecutive PSG studies (n = 30). Standard PSG recording and scoring methods were employed. A total of 1.5% (n = 41) an

Relative validity of self-reported snoring as a symptom of sleep apnea in a sleep clinic population.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative validity of responses to three different questions about snoring as indicators for sleep apnea in a population referred to a sleep clinic. Secondary goals were to evaluate the meaning of a "don't know" response to these questions and to examine how the associations between snoring and sleep apnea are influenced by demographics. Results from 1,409 patients in a sleep clinic indicated that nearly all levels of estimated snoring frequency were associated with a greater likelihood of sleep apnea. In addition, a "don't know" response indicated
