A concise self-report scale can identify high expressed emotions and predict higher relapse risk in schizophrenia.

PURPOSE: Although high expressed emotions (EE) is one of the most significant predictors for schizophrenic relapse, the assessment of EE is often impeded by the demanding Camberwell Family Interview (CFI) that is required to be conducted by specifically trained staff. To enable a more efficient assessment of EE, we developed the 12-item Concise Chinese Level of Expressed Emotion Scale (CCLEES) and reported its predictive and concurrent validity in this study. METHODS: A one-year prospective study design was adopted. Totally 101 participants diagnosed with schizophrenia were recruited from the…

Evidence for Anger Saliency during the Recognition of Chimeric Facial Expressions of Emotions in Underage Ebola Survivors.

One of the crucial features defining basic emotions and their prototypical facial expressions is their value for survival. Childhood traumatic experiences affect the effective recognition of facial expressions of negative emotions, normally allowing the recruitment of adequate behavioral responses to environmental threats. Specifically, anger becomes an extraordinarily salient stimulus unbalancing victims' recognition of negative emotions. Despite the plethora of studies on this topic, to date, it is not clear whether this phenomenon reflects an overall response tendency toward anger recogniti…

Self-assessed limited prosocial emotions do not distinguish community youth with psychosocial problems from those without them.

BACKGROUND: In DSM 5, conduct disorder was expanded with the new specifier 'with limited prosocial emotions (LPE)'. These callous-unemotional traits have been emphasized as the 'core' of psychopathy syndrome providing greater information about current and future impairment. Individuals with callous-unemotional traits have shown elevated levels of impairment, and these traits have been suggested to serve as a useful indicator for psychiatric vulnerability and psychosocial maladjustment also among community youth. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of LPE in a sample o…

How the 'warped' relationships between nurses' emotions, attitudes, social support and perceived organizational conditions impact customer orientation.

AIMS: Much research focuses on organizational culture and its impact on customer orientation or emotional states and their impact on job satisfaction and well-being. This study aims to combine the complex roles of nurses' emotion states and job satisfaction in a model that identifies the effects of standards for service delivery (organizational culture), supervisor and co-worker support and the development of customer orientation. BACKGROUND: A previous study examined the relationships between nurses' personal resources, job satisfaction and customer orientation. This study examines how these

On angry leaders and agreeable followers. How leaders' emotions and followers' personalities shape motivation and team performance.

Do followers perform better when their leader expresses anger or when their leader expresses happiness? We propose that this depends on the follower's level of agreeableness. Anger is associated with hostility and conflict-states that are at odds with agreeable individuals' goals. Happiness facilitates affiliation and positive relations-states that are in line with agreeable individuals' goals. Accordingly, the two studies we conducted showed that agreeableness moderates the effects of a leader's emotional displays. In a scenario study, participants with lower levels of agreeableness responded

Gender differences in sense of coherence, perceived social support, and negative emotions among drug-abstinent israeli inmates.

This study examines gender differences in the sense of coherence, perceived social support, and negative emotions among drug-abstinent Israeli inmates. One hundred nineteen inmates have participated in this study (65 men and 54 women). The findings indicate that among female inmates, abstinence of more than a year is related to a decrease in sense of coherence and to an increase in their perceived friend support. In contrast, among male inmates, abstinence of more than a year is related to an increase in sense of coherence and no change at all in their perceived friend support. In addition, ho…

Which graphic symbols do 4-year-old children choose to represent each of the four basic emotions?

The purpose of this study was to investigate which graphic symbols are perceived by typically developing 4-year-old children as the best representation of four basic emotions. Participants were asked to respond to questions by using graphic symbols taken from PCS, PICSYM, and Makaton for four basic emotions: happy, sad, afraid, angry. The purpose was to determine which graphic symbol the children selected as a representation of an emotion. Frequencies of choices per symbol were obtained and the different symbols were analysed in terms of facial features that distinguish them from each other. T…

Emotions in vowel segments of continuous speech: analysis of the glottal flow using the normalised amplitude quotient.

Emotions in short vowel segments of continuous speech were analysed using inverse filtering and a recently developed glottal flow parameter, the normalised amplitude quotient (NAQ). Simulated emotion portrayals were produced by 9 professional stage actors. Separated /a:/ vowel segments were inverse filtered and parameterized using NAQ. Statistical analyses showed significant differences among most of the emotions studied. Results also demonstrated clear gender differences. Inverse filtering, together with NAQ, was shown to be a promising method for the analysis of emotional content in continuo…

Drug-induced actions on brain neurotransmitter systems and changes in the behaviors and emotions of depressed patients.

Despite cumulative evidence that the tricyclic drugs result in significant changes in the functioning of brain serotonergic (5-HT) and nordrenergic (NE) systems, such changes have not been found to be associated with recovery from depression. Based upon evidence that the 5-HT and NE systems were associated with different emotions, it was hypothesized that changes in these systems were associated with different components of behavior in drug-responsive patients and not with changes in the "whole" disorder. Findings from this multihospital study of 104 unipolar and bipolar depressed patients sho…

The Paradox of Positive Emotions in the LGBTQIA+ Community: Examining Relationships with Alcohol Misuse and Interpersonal Support.

BACKGROUND: LGBTQIA+ community members report greater risks for alcohol misuse problems. In response, researchers are encouraged to identify protective factors in the development of prevention programming. Namely, it is important to deconstruct how LGBTQIA+ individuals use support mechanisms to buffer the effects of risk factors (positive emotions) on alcohol misuse outcomes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether social support indices moderated the relationship between positive emotions and alcohol misuse. METHODS: A community sample of 169 LGBTQIA+ individuals completed a series…

Unravelling dynamic trajectories of epistemic emotions in a technology-enhanced problem-solving task: A multimodal data approach.

BACKGROUND: Scholars have reached a consensus on the influential roles and dynamic characteristics of epistemic emotions during the problem-solving process; however, few research provided empirical evidence to reveal the temporal progression of these emotions. AIMS: This study leverages multimodal data-self-reports and physiological sensors-to examine variations in a focal epistemic emotion across learning phases and performance levels and to uncover transition patterns among different epistemic emotions. SAMPLES: A total of 105 students enrolled in a five-year undergraduate medical program …

Efficacy of Acupuncture in Alleviating Negative Emotions in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Preliminary studies have indicated that acupuncture may play a role in the management of negative emotions in patients with PCOS. Consequently, a meta-analysis was conducted to assess the validity of acupuncture as a therapeutic modality for treating negative emotional symptoms in patients with PCOS. METHODS: A meticulous search of nine databases was performed to identify randomized controlled trials assessing the effectiveness of acupuncture in the management of negative emotions in individuals diagnosed with PCOS…
