The Scottish Scurvy Epidemic of 1847.

This paper examines the emergence of scurvy in several parts of Lowland Scotland during 1847. At ÿ rst the condition was not recognised because of a mistaken, persistent belief that scurvy was only seen at sea, despite the work of James Lind who showed that sea and land scurvy were one and the same. Professor Christison failed initially to recognise the disease and wrongly thought it was caused by a lack of milk in the diet; colleagues elsewhere correctly attributed scurvy to the loss of the potato in the diet of the poor.

Vulnerable Children in a Dual Epidemic.

Two epidemics-Covid-19 and opioid use disorder (OUD) -are creating short- and long-term mental and physical health risks for vulnerable children and adolescents. Information about the risks to children from exposure to the coronavirus is still fragmentary, but even many healthy children are not getting appropriate health care, such as vaccinations or monitoring of developmental milestones during the Covid-19 pandemic. Children living in poverty are at heightened risk. Youngsters who are already dealing with OUD in their families-2.2 million as of 2017-face serious consequences stemming from tr…

[Cognitive bias in the context of epidemic].

In connection with the scope and duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, the clinical judgement of clinicians and medical practitioners could be influenced such that diagnostic errors (delays and inaccuracies) may ensue. We hereby recall through two clinical scenarios the constant need for practitioners to take a step back in reflecting of the diagnostic process to avoid the « tunnel effect » which may result in delaying common and frequent infectious diseases. The flu-like symptoms presented by these patients (fever, myalgia and asthenia…) quickly prompted our emergency room colleagues to suspect

Quarantine as a tool of epidemic fight.

Until the 19th century, the factor causing epidemics was not known, and the escape from a place where it occurred as well as isolation of patients was considered to be the only effective way to avoid illness and death. Quarantine in a sense similar to modern times was used in 1377 in Ragusa, today's Dubrovnik, during the plague epidemic. It was the first administratively imposed procedure in the world's history. It was later used in Venice and other rich port cities in the Mediterranean. On the territory of today's Poland, quarantine measures were used by the so-called Mayor of the Air - Lukas…

[Epidemic and research progress of babesiosis].

Babesiosis is an emerging parasitic disease, distributed globally in Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, and Australia, and the United States is still the country with the largest number of babesiosis cases reported. Babesiosis in China is mainly distributed in the northeast, followed by the southwest and other regions. As a new vector-borne infectious disease, babesiosis poses a serious threat to human health, and its research foundation is relatively weak, so it requires more attention and recognition. The research hot spots on babesiosis are screening of diagnostic antigens, and

The United States opioid epidemic.

The United States opioid epidemic is a nationwide public health crisis. Initially driven by increased consumption and availability of pharmaceutical opioids, an increasing number of opioid overdoses are now related to heroin and illicitly manufactured fentanyl and fentanyl analogs. Addressing this epidemic requires addressing the stigma associated with opioid use disorders and its treatment, improving access to efficacious treatment options, specifically methadone and buprenorphine, and reducing opioid overdose fatalities with distribution of the opioid antagonist and overdose reversal agent n

Solving the Opioid Epidemic in Ohio.

On May 31, 2017, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine took a step in fighting Ohio's opioid epidemic, bringing the first of many lawsuits against five top pharmaceutical companies. However, under Federal and State law, there is an exception called the Learned Intermediary Doctrine, which can absolve drug manufacturers of liability from any misconduct that might be found and transfer that liability to a treating physician. This exception is the way many drug manufacturers were able to avoid being held responsible in the past. This Note proposes that with the current pending lawsuit in the State of

Bronchiectasis: an emerging global epidemic.

Bronchiectasis has an increasing profile within respiratory medicine. This chronic and irreversible airways disease is common but suffers from a lack of evidenced based therapy for patients and, a lack of understanding of its inherent heterogeneity. Research focused on bronchiectasis must therefore be prioritized if we are to adequately address this evolving clinical problem. This special issue on bronchiectasis focuses on its clinical, microbiological and therapeutic aspects. By bringing together a unique collection of original research and review articles, we hope this issue will showcase in

Pediatric Trauma - An Emerging Epidemic.

We enrolled 911 children aged <12 years presenting to the trauma center of a tertiary-care hospital (over a period of 18 months) with history of injuries. Majority (582; 63.9%) of children had sustained injuries at home; 56 (6.1%) had severe injuries based on Pediatric Trauma Score. Of road traffic accidents victims (n=232), majority (40.5%) were two-wheeler pillion riders or pedestrians (31.9%). More Indian data are required and efforts are needed to prioritize injury prevention efforts in children.

An unusual cause of epidemic thyrotoxicosis.

We describe the case of four patients consulting for headache and tachycardia of brutal onset. Their biological data were compatible with primary hyperthyroidism with low TSH and high T4 serum levels. Serum thyroglobulin level was low and Tc-scintigraphy showed decreased uptake with a homogenous pattern. These results allowed to conclude a thyrotoxicosis caused by thyroid hormones intake. History taking revealed consumption of beef neck meat containing all or parts of the bovine thyroid gland. Evolution was favourable with beta-blockers. A literature review of « hamburger thyrotoxicosis » is p

Visceral leishmaniasis: a forgotten epidemic.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL or kala-azar) is most endemic in Asia and Africa and commonly affects young children. It is usually caused by Leishmania donovani or Leishmania infantum that are transmitted by Phlebotomine sand flies. Transmission may be anthroponotic or zoonotic or both, depending on the endemic area. Clinical features include fever, hepatosplenomegaly, weight loss and pancytopenia. Younger age, malnutrition and immunosuppression (HIV infection, use of immunosuppressive drugs) are risk factors. Many infections remain asymptomatic. Diagnosis is made by demonstration of the Leishmani

Porcine epidemic diarrhea in China.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) is a contagious intestinal disease caused by Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) that characterized by vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. PEDV was first identified in the 1980s in China, and since then, it has become one of the most common viral causes of diarrhea. In October 2010, a large-scale outbreak of PED caused by a PEDV variant occurred in China, resulting in tremendous economic losses. This review presents a comprehensive description of PEDV history, prevalence, molecular features, and prevention and control strategies in China.

Zika virus epidemic: an update.

Zika Virus (ZIKV), previously the cause of only rare and sporadic human infections, is now considered a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Over the past two years, ZIKV has become a pandemic encompassing much of the Americas. ZIKV is now proven to cause microcephaly and ophthalmic anomalies in the newborn. Hydrops fetalis, developmental delay, and other anomalies are increasingly being attributed to ZIKV infection in fetuses and neonates. Sequelae of congenital infection and rapid spread of ZIKV throughout the Americas has catapulted Zika virus concerns to the forefront of the m

An epidemic model with a multistage vaccine.

Many diseases, such as the seasonal flu, tetanus, and smallpox, can be vaccinated against with a single dose of a vaccine. However, some diseases require multiple doses of a vaccine for immunity. For example, Hepatitis B requires three doses of a vaccine, with the second occurring about 1 month after the first and the third occurring about 5 months after the second, for immunity. Diseases requiring a multistage vaccine such as Hepatitis B can have extra complications with its vaccination program, as some who start the doses may forget to complete the program or could become infected before com
