Association between "Life's Essential 8" cardiovascular health and apparent treatment-resistant hypertension among US adults from the NHANES, 2005 to 2018.

BACKGROUND: The association between healthy lifestyle and American Heart Association (AHA) Life's Essential 8 (LE8) score and apparent treatment-resistant hypertension(aTRH)remains uncertain. We aimed to explore the association between healthy lifestyle and higher LE8 score and apparent treatment-resistant hypertension in the general population. METHODS: Using NHANES data from 2005 to 2018, we included and analyzed information on 7,474 participants eligible for this study. The association between LE8 and aTRH was explored using logistic regression models, and the association between LE8 and a

Association between renin-angiotensin antagonism and COVID-19-related mortality in patients with essential hypertension: A single center, retrospective cohort study.

There is conflicting evidence in select mouse models and humans that suggest angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 expression is increased due to treatment with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ACEI/ARBs). Given the wide range of conditions that these medications treat, further evaluation is necessary to determine safety in the context of COVID-19. We sought to determine the association between use of ACEI/ARBs and COVID-19 severity in patients with essential hypertension. We included 714 patients with essential hypertension diagnosed with COVID-19 and admi…

Serum miR-195-5p Exhibits Clinical Significance in the Diagnosis of Essential Hypertension with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus by Targeting DRD1.

OBJECTIVES: Diagnosis and management of essential hypertension (EH) or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by combining comprehensive treatment and classificatory diagnosis have been continuously improved. However, understanding the pathogenesis of EH patients with concomitant T2DM and subsequent treatment remain the major challenges owing to the lack of non-invasive biomarkers and information regarding the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Herein, we collected 200 serum samples from EH and/or T2DM patients and healthy donors (N). Gene-expression profiling was conducted to identify candidate microR…

Improved assessment of arterial stiffness using corrected cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI0) in overweight adolescents with white-coat and essential hypertension.

Arterial stiffness is a marker of vascular damage. Although adiposity increases cardiovascular risk, the relationship between paediatric ove … and CAVI0 in hypertensive adolescents seems to counterbalance the early arteriosclerotic effect of essential hypertension. The increase in CAVI, but not CAVI0, in overweight white-coat hypertensives could be attributable to residual BP dependence of CAVI, which is not present in CAVI0. Under certain conditions, CAVI0 may offer a clinically relevant improved assessment …

Does acute serotonergic type-2 antagonism reduce blood pressure? Comparative effects of single doses of ritanserin and ketanserin in essential hypertension.

We have studied the acute effects of the serotonergic type-2 (5-HT2) antagonists ketanserin and ritanserin given as single oral doses to patients with essential hypertension. Ketanserin has alpha 1-antagonist properties, whereas ritanserin is largely devoid of alpha 1-receptor binding affinity. Ketanserin (40 mg orally) caused a significant reduction (p less than 0.03) of sitting mean arterial pressure over the 8-h period following drug administration by an average of 15.4 +/- 3.2 mm Hg (mean +/- SEM) as compared to a reduction of 8.5 +/- 2.2 following placebo. In contrast, ritanserin had no s…

Two Cases of Gastric Varices with Left-sided Portal Hypertension Due to Essential Thrombocythemia Treated with Gastric Devascularization or Partial Splenic Embolization.

Left-sided portal hypertension (LSPH) is a condition of extrahepatic portal hypertension that often results in bleeding from isolated gastric varices (GVs). LSPH is sometimes caused by myeloproliferative diseases, such as essential thrombocythemia (ET). We herein report two cases of GVs with LSPH due to ET that were successfully controlled by gastric devascularization (GDS) or partial splenic embolization (PSE). Since each patient with LSPH due to ET has a different pathology, optimal treatment should be performed depending on the patient's condition, such as platelet counts, hemodynamics, or
