A review of evidence-based management of infectious ocular surface disease in shelter-housed domestic cats.

Infectious ocular surface disease (IOSD) is a common problem in shelter-housed domestic cats and has a widespread negative impact on animal welfare. While the common etiological agents are well-described, addressing IOSD in large groups of animals presents a management challenge to the clinician and logistical challenges to shelter employees. Treatments, diagnostics, and prevention strategies that are effective in privately owned or experimental animals may be impractical or ineffective in the shelter environment. This review article focuses on the relative prevalence of etiological agents in

Atypical microbial keratitis.

Atypical microbial keratitis refers to corneal infections caused by micro-organisms not commonly encountered in clinical practice. Unlike infections caused by common bacteria, cases of atypical microbial keratitis are often associated with worse clinical outcomes and visual prognosis. This is due to the challenges in the identification of causative organisms with standard diagnostic techniques, resulting in delays in the initiation of appropriate therapies. Furthermore, due to the comparatively lower incidence of atypical microbial keratitis, there is limited literature on effective management

The Role of Vitrectomy in the Management of Fungal Endophthalmitis.

Fungal endophthalmitis is an important cause of vision loss worldwide with a large body of literature describing the treatment of the disease. The evidence supporting the use of pars plana vitrectomy in the management of fungal endophthalmitis is largely comprised of case reports and case series and demonstrates the important role of vitrectomy surgery. Vitrectomy can improve the likelihood of establishing the diagnosis, enhance the treatment of infection by removing fungal elements in the vitreous, aid in the removal of other inoculated intraocular structures, and is an important tool in the

[Visual system involvement in selected zoonotic diseases. II. Trichinellosis].

Trichinellosis is the medical problem that is still actual in our country. The paper presents recent taxonomic data regarding Trichinella spp. as well as selected epidemiologic aspects. Pathomechanism of trichinellosis and the outline of clinical pathology are also discussed. The image of lesions involving organ of sight, diagnostic methods and treatment are described with details as well. The paper is highlighting the role of ophthalmologist in early diagnosis of trichinellosis.

Ocular manifestations of systemic infections.

Ocular involvement, mainly uveitis or retinochoroiditis, is common in various systemic diseases, such as endogenous endophthalmitis, Lyme disease, human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I infection, toxoplasmosis, and toxocariasis. Recent progress, especially in laboratory microbiologic testing, has enabled us to reliably diagnose many formerly idiopathic intraocular inflammatory diseases. A group of systemic infectious diseases, including those discussed here, are implicated as a body of emerging or re-emerging diseases that have appeared in the past two decades and are thought to have a close

Immune responses drive chorioretinitis and retinal pathology after neonatal CMV infection.

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) causes a common congenital infection leading to long-term neurological impairments including brain, cochlear, and ocular pathology. Infection of newborn mice with murine (M)CMV is an established model of neuropathology caused by congenital CMV infection, with recent work suggesting that brain pathology may be driven by immune responses. In the eye, however, CMV retinitis is thought to result from virus-driven necrosis in the absence of T cell responses. We found that MCMV infection of newborn mice recapitulates human eye disease after congenital CMV infection, inclu

Infectious diseases of the conjunctiva and cornea.

The modern local antibiotics, such as the aminoglycosides and quinolones, are very successful in treating infectious conjunctivitis and keratitis. More notably in some Third World countries, however, suppurative keratitis is found in more than half of the infectious disease cases caused by Fusarium species. Here, of course, treatment should be antifungal. The emergence of some problematic microorganisms is related to contact lens wear. Pseudomonas, for example, have the ability to adhere to contact lenses and thus form microcolonies, which are protected by biofilm that predisposes to infection

Indications for eye removal in southern Nigeria.

To determine the trend in frequency and clinical indications of surgical removal of eyes in a tertiary eye centre in Calabar, Nigeria. This is a 10-year retrospective review of patients who underwent surgical removal of eyes in a tertiary centre. The clinical records were reviewed (between Jan 2001 and Dec 2010) for demographic data, type of surgery, and clinical indications. A total of 137 eyes were surgically removed within the study period. Of these 46 were children (<16 years). There were 85 males and 52 females giving a M:F ratio of 1.6:1. Clinical indications for surgical eye removal inc

Post-Traumatic Endophthalmitis: A Mini-Review.

Post-traumatic endophthalmitis comprises 25-30% of all endophthalmitis cases. Post-traumatic endophthalmitis is an important clinical condition that may have serious anatomical and functional consequences. The type of pathogenic microorganism, nature of the injury, the presence of a foreign body, and the geographical region in which the trauma occurred are all important factors influencing both treatment and prognosis. Unlike postoperative endophthalmitis, there is not a confirmed treatment protocol recommended by the Endophthalmitis-Vitrectomy Study Group in traumatic cases. In this study, we
