The nose is in the medial portion of the face and is frequently injured in trauma of this area. Due to its situation its structure and shape, and its essential function, this organ is particularly exposed in the case of facial burns. These injuries, are usually associated with larger injuries, and frequently with systemic problems, such as respiratory problems. The authors describe nasal burns in the larger context of facial burns, and summarize recent data on this topic. They then recall the fascinating story of rhinopoiesis through the ages. The third part is devoted to their personal approa

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between endoneurial fluid pressure (EFP) and electroneurography (ENoG) of the facial nerve was studied in order to evaluate the ENoG as the basis of pathophysiology of the decompression of the facial nerve.
METHODS: The values of ENoG were recorded by an instrument of physiology on the normal and crushed facial nerves of guinea pigs. Endoneurial fluid pressures were measured by a servo-nulling micropipette system at the same time. After the EFP were measured, the facial nerves were removed and fixed properly for examination under the light and electron microscope i

Injuries to the facial bones, orbits and adjacent soft tissue structures are common. Despite the increasing safety precautions in modern cars, facial injury is very often caused by motor vehicle accidents. Severe trauma to the face is a strong indication for radiological investigation. In the patient with maxillo-facial trauma, the radiological exploration of should answer two major questions: do the fractures involve areas that may alter the physiologic function of the sinuses, mouth, nasal vault or orbit?, and will the fracture result in any cosmetically detectable abnormality? The goal of t

Panfacial injuries are those that involve trauma to the lower, middle, and upper facial bones. They often are accompanied by multisystem- or polytrauma and require a team approach for management. Although stabilization of the overall status of the patient takes precedence, early and total restoration of facial form and function should be the goal of the maxillofacial surgeon.

Parotid trauma can lead to both short and long-term complications such as bleeding, infection, facial nerve injury, sialocele, and salivary fistula, resulting in pain and disfigurement. Facial injuries inferior to a line extended from the tragus to the upper lip should raise concern for parotid injury. These injuries can be stratified into three regions as they relate to the masseter muscle. Injuries posing the greatest risk of damage to Stensen's duct include those anterior to the posterior border of the masseter and necessitate exploration. When the duct is disrupted, emphasis should be plac…

Cranial nerve injury is disabling for patients, and facial nerve injury is particularly debilitating due to combined functional impairment and disfigurement. The most widely accepted approaches for reconstructing nerve gap injuries involve using sensory nerve grafts to bridge the nerve defect. Prior work on preferential motor reinnervation suggests, however, that motor pathways may preferentially support motoneuron regeneration after nerve injury. The effect of motor versus sensory nerve grafting after facial nerve injury has not been previously investigated. Insights into outcomes of motor ve
