Identifying in-the-moment alterations in socioemotional connection in youth at clinical high risk for psychosis and their caregivers via positivity resonance.

Moments of shared positive emotions, or positivity resonance, can strengthen relationships while promoting well-being and health. However, positivity resonance's potential clinical relevance - including among youth at clinical high risk (CHR) and their caregivers - has yet to be investigated. The present laboratory-based dyadic interaction study examined positivity resonance behavior in 66 dyads across 126 participants (30 CHR youth-caregiver dyads; 36 typically developing youth-caregiver dyads) who engaged in 10-min conflict and pleasant videorecorded conversations. We used automated facial e

Face perception and impact of face masks at 6 months post-term age in preterm and term infants (The BabyFace Study).

The COVID-19 pandemic drastically changed face-to-face interactions, as face masks cover facial zones and affect face perception. Preterm birth is associated with altered face perception, which is important in socio-cognitive development. Use of face masks in neonatal units could further impede face perception development. We assessed the impact of face masks on face perception, in preterm (23–30 weeks gestation at birth, n = 24) and term infants (n = 24) at 6 months’ post-term age, using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The infants viewed alternating 5-s trials with images of fu

Implicit neural sensitivity for negatively valued social and non-social visual scenes in young adults exposed to childhood adversity.

BACKGROUND: Based on facial expression experiments, childhood adversity may be associated with threat-related information processing bias. Yet, it is unclear whether this generalizes to other threat-related stimuli, such as social and non-social visual scenes. METHODS: We combined fast periodic visual stimulation with frequency-tagging electroencephalography (EEG) and eye-tracking to assess automatic and implicit neural discrimination, neural salience and preferential looking towards negative versus neutral social and non-social visual scenes in young adults aged 16-24 years (51 with childhoo

Biased attention allocation in major depressive disorder: A replication and exploration of the potential effects of depression history.

BACKGROUND: Increased attention allocation to negative-valenced information and decreased attention allocation to positive-valenced information have been implicated in the etiology and maintenance of depression. The Matrix task, a free-viewing eye-tracking attention assessment task, has shown corroborating results, coupled with adequate reliability. Yet, replication efforts are still needed. Therefore, we replicated a previously published study in depression, using the same task and attention measures. We also explored the potential added effect of depression history on attention allocation.

The role of functional emotion circuits in distinct dimensions of psychopathology in youth.

Several mental disorders emerge during childhood or adolescence and are often characterized by socioemotional difficulties, including alterations in emotion perception. Emotional facial expressions are processed in discrete functional brain modules whose connectivity patterns encode emotion categories, but the involvement of these neural circuits in psychopathology in youth is poorly understood. This study examined the associations between activation and functional connectivity patterns in emotion circuits and psychopathology during development. We used task-based fMRI data from the Philadelph

Implications of depressive mood in OSAHS patients: insights from event-related potential.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a chronic breathing disorder characterized by recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep. Although previous studies have shown a link between OSAHS and depressive mood, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying mood disorders in OSAHS patients remain poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the emotion processing mechanism in OSAHS patients with depressive mood using event-related potentials (ERPs). METHODS: Seventy-four OSAHS patients were divided into the depressive mood and non-depressive mood groups according t

Test-Retest Reliability of Frontal and Parietal Alpha Asymmetry during Presentation of Emotional Face Stimuli in Healthy Subjects.

Resting-state and event-related frontal alpha asymmetry have been suggested as potential neurobiological biomarkers for depression and other psychiatric conditions. To be used as such, sufficient test-retest reliability needs to be demonstrated. However, test-retest reliability is underinvestigated for event-related alpha asymmetry. The objective of this study was to examine both short-term within-session and long-term between-session reliability of stimulus-related medial and lateral frontal as well as parietal alpha EEG asymmetry in healthy subjects during a simple emotional face processing

Transdiagnostic neural correlates of affective face processing in anxiety and depression.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether there are neurobiologic differences between various anxiety and depressive disorders, or whether they are characterized by shared neurobiologic variation that cuts across diagnostic boundaries. For instance, multiple anxiety disorders and depression may be characterized by abnormalities in blood oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) response during the processing of affective scenes and faces. To interrogate the shared or unique nature of these aberrations, research that examines the influence of transdiagnostic, dimensional predictors across multiple diagnoses is nee

Sensitivity to facial expressions among extremely low birth weight survivors in their 30s.

The current study investigated the impact of birth weight on the ability to recognize facial expressions in adulthood among the longest known prospectively followed cohort of extremely low birth weight survivors (ELBW; <1,000 g). We measured perceptual threshold to detect subtle facial expressions and confusion among different emotion categories in order to disentangle visual perceptual ability from emotional processing. ELBW adults (N = 64, Mage  = 31.9 years) were more likely than normal birth weight (NBW) controls (N = 82, Mage  = 32.5 years) to see fear in angry faces. This finding was not

"Blindsight" and subjective awareness of fearful faces: Inversion reverses the deficits in fear perception associated with core psychopathic traits.

Though emotional faces preferentially reach awareness, the present study utilised both objective and subjective indices of awareness to determine whether they enhance subjective awareness and "blindsight". Under continuous flash suppression, participants localised a disgusted, fearful or neutral face (objective index), and rated their confidence (subjective index). Psychopathic traits were also measured to investigate their influence on emotion perception. As predicted, fear increased localisation accuracy, subjective awareness and "blindsight" of upright faces. Coldhearted traits were inverse

Contribution of neuroimaging to the understanding of social cognition in epilepsy.

This narrative review aims to identify and summarize existing research to better understand the pathophysiological and neuroanatomical bases of social cognition deficits in people with epilepsy. The neuroanatomical basis of social cognition was primarily examined in healthy subjects. In healthy individuals, social cognition is supported by a complex network of interconnected brain regions. Facial emotion recognition relies on a distributed set of structures, including the occipitotemporal neocortex, the temporoparietal and prefrontal areas, and the putamen with a pivotal role of the amygdala.

Verbal and facial expression cues in emotional alignment.

Emotional alignment during conversation, defined as the mutual recognition of and exchange of appropriate emotional expressions between interlocutors, is essential for successful interactions, and can be elicited by both verbal content and facial expressions. But do facial expressions produced during conversation correspond more directly to the emotion expressed through the interlocutor’s words or their facial movements? Are different emotions, expressed via facial expressions and storytelling, equally influential on listeners’ emotional processing? To address this, we examined emotional align

Exploring emotion recognition in adults and adolescents with anorexia nervosa using a body motion paradigm.

OBJECTIVE: There is consistent evidence of difficulties in social cognition in adults with anorexia nervosa (AN), but less is known about adolescents. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability to recognise emotion expressed in body movement in adults and adolescents with AN. METHOD: One hundred and ninety-three females participated in the study (AN = 97: 61 adults and 36 adolescents). The performance of participants with AN on a body emotion recognition task was compared to age-matched healthy controls (HC = 96). RESULTS: AN participants were significantly worse than HC recognisin

I'm looking through you: Mentalizing in frontotemporal dementia and progressive supranuclear palsy.

Mentalizing and emotion recognition are impaired in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). It is not clear whether these abilities are also disturbed in other conditions with prominent frontal lobe involvement, such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Our aim was to investigate social cognition (facial emotion recognition, recognition of social norms violation and mentalizing) in bvFTD and PSP. The neural basis of these functions in PSP and bvFTD groups, by analysis of structural neuroimaging, were also investigated. Twenty-three bvFTD patients, 21 PSP patients and 23 healthy

Neurophysiological mechanism of possibly confounding peripheral activation of the facial nerve during corticobulbar tract monitoring.

OBJECTIVE: To improve the recognition and possibly prevent confounding peripheral activation of the facial nerve caused by leaking transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) current during corticobulbar tract monitoring. METHODS: We applied a single stimulus and a short train of electrical stimuli directly to the extracranial portion of the facial nerve. We compared the peripherally elicited compound muscle action potential (CMAP) of the facial nerve with the responses elicited by TES during intraoperative monitoring of the corticobulbar tract. RESULTS: A single stimulus applied directly to t

Early detection and management of mesenteric traction syndrome using the hypotension prediction index: a case report.

Mesenteric traction syndrome (MTS) is a transient circulatory disturbance characterized by sudden hypotension, tachycardia, and facial flushing following mesenteric manipulation during abdominal surgery. Early recognition is essential; however, conventional monitoring often detects these events only after hemodynamic deterioration. We report a 68-year-old man who underwent distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy under combined general and thoracic epidural anesthesia. Sixteen minutes after the start of surgery, the hypotension prediction index (HPI)-an artificial intelligence-based monitoring sy

Analysis of facial expressions in parkinson's disease through video-based automatic methods.

BACKGROUND: The automatic analysis of facial expressions is an evolving field that finds several clinical applications. One of these applications is the study of facial bradykinesia in Parkinson's disease (PD), which is a major motor sign of this neurodegenerative illness. Facial bradykinesia consists in the reduction/loss of facial movements and emotional facial expressions called hypomimia. NEW METHOD: In this work we propose an automatic method for studying facial expressions in PD patients relying on video-based METHODS: 17 Parkinsonian patients and 17 healthy control subjects were asked
