Despite aggressive antibiotic therapy and surgical debridement, Aeromonas necrotizing fasciitis (NF) can lead to high amputation and mortality rates. Our study compares the different antibiotic minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) via Epsilometer tests (E-tests) between non-survivors and survivors of Aeromonas NF of limbs. A prospective review of 16 patients with Aeromonas NF was conducted for 3.5 years in a tertiary coastal hospital. E-tests were conducted for 15 antimicrobial agents to determine the MIC value for Aeromonas species. These patients were divided into non-survival and surviv

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review is to discuss the latest evidence of epidemiology, diagnostic methods, and treatment of necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) with a particular focus on necrotizing fasciitis (NF).
RECENT FINDINGS: NSTIs have been historically referred to as NF but encompass a broader range of infections, with variable rates ranging from 0.86 to 32.64 per 100 000 person-years, influenced by factors such as climate and seasonal variations. They have diverse microbiological profiles categorized into different types based on the involved pathogens, including polymic

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis is a very rare complication of a bacterial infection that can have a dental cause. This type of infection typically affects fascial plane, which has a poor blood supply and can affect soft tissue and cervical fascia and can spread quickly causing infection of mediastinum. Initially, in the first stage, the overlying tissues are unaffected, and this can delay diagnosis and surgical intervention. Incidence in children is extremely rare and can be frequently associated with various other general pathologies that decrease the immune system response. We present a case

Acute appendicitis is considered one of the most common surgical emergencies with low morbidity and mortality. However, delay in the diagnosis may lead to perforation of the appendix. Hence, complications may arise, including necrotizing fasciitis, a rare complication of a perforated appendix. We present a case of perforated appendicitis complicated by necrotizing fasciitis leading to rapid deterioration. A 75-year-old male patient presented to our emergency room with a three-day history of right lower quadrant abdominal pain and abdominal distention. On admission, computed tomography (CT) sca

Background: Secondary aortoenteric fistula is an iatrogenic complication after aortic reconstructive surgery presenting with gastrointestinal bleeding and/or infectious symptoms. Infrequently, it may manifest with nonspecific and atypical clinical signs. We present a case of necrotizing fasciitis of the thigh complicating secondary aortoduodenal fistula, diagnosed with CT-scan. Case presentation: A 67-year-old man with a history of an open aortic-bifemoral bypass 6 years ago was admitted for a progressively swollen and painful right thigh for the last month. Through laboratory and morphologica

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a deadly disorder that can be challenging to diagnose on history and examination alone. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is widely available and has been increasingly used for diagnosing skin and soft tissue infections. We performed a systematic review to determine the accuracy of POCUS for diagnosing NF with subgroup analyses of the accuracy of specific POCUS examination components.
METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, LILACS, the Cochrane databases, Google Scholar, and bibliographies of selected articles were assessed for all retrospective, prospective,

RATIONALE: The diagnosis of lymphoma in routine diagnostics can be challenging due to clinical, morphological and immunphenotypical overlap with unusual reactive processes termed "pseudolymphomas."
PATIENT CONCERNS: 45-year-old male that underwent surgical debridement for a necrotizing fasciitis of the thigh with concomitant excision of a regional lymph node.
DIAGNOSES: The lymph node demonstrated an architecture-effacing activation and proliferation of lymphoblasts and was initially misdiagnosed as an aggressive lymphoma. Only in consideration of the clinical context and with the help of ad

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare and quickly progressing infection and leads to 100% mortality if untreated. Quick diagnosis and an early and radical surgical treatment are essential for stopping bacterial progression. Unfortunately, the absence of clear clinical signs makes the diagnosis often challenging. Therefore, we searched for easy determinable predictive laboratory markers for NF. This is the first study which includes lactate values in a new score. A retrospective analysis of patients with NF (n = 44) and patients with erysipelas (n = 150) was performed. Lactate values, patients'

We report the first case of necrotizing fasciitis and bacteremia caused by Bifidobacterium breve. Some Bifidobacterium breve strains are known as probiotic bacterium. However, it causes bacteremia in infants and immunocompromised patients. Our patient developed necrotizing fasciitis which was thought to have been infected from chronic diabetic foot ulcers. Bifidobacterium breve was isolated from the patient's blood and soft tissue sample. The patient underwent amputation and intravenous antibiotics administration.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a surgically diagnosed infection of the deep soft tissues that results in high mortality. It is usually caused by aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and group A Streptococcus. Metallosis is characterized by the deposition of metal debris in the blood that causes metal poisoning and tissue damage. The abrasion of metal components that occurs after joint replacements causes metallosis, which may lead to severe complications. We report a rare case of metallosis-induced necrotizing fasciitis of the right thigh. Metallosis should be considered as a cause of necrotizing fasciiti

The present paper is a case-based review on rare complications of illegal abortion, i.e., necrotizing fasciitis missed early by the treating gynecologists which landed up into a negligence tort against the physicians. The common complications of the abortion like incomplete abortion, haemorrhage, sepsis, etc. are usually handled successfully by the gynecologists; however, early detection often missed when a rare complication like necrotising fasciitis occurs. Eventually leading to litigations in case of death of the patient. The newer techniques have reduced the complications in medically term

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an aggressive rapidly spreading infection of the skin and the subcutaneous tissue. Its occurrence in the breast is extremely rare especially after routine procedures like core-needle biopsy. We present the case of a 35-year-old non-lactating female who presented with swelling and a necrotic patch with pus discharge over her right breast following a core needle biopsy. She was immediately treated with aggressive debridement and culture-specific intravenous antibiotics following which she had an uneventful recovery. It is quintessential to diagnose the condition and

Necrotizing fasciitis and myositis caused by group A streptococci (GAS) are among the most fulminating infections, with a mortality rate of 20% to 30%. Although numerous regimens have been utilized in attempts to control these devastating infections, such as combinations of various antimicrobial agents and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) as well as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, none have been the complete answer. Zhu and colleagues have utilized a transposon-directed insertion-site sequencing (TraDIS) protocol to identify 126 genes of M1 and 116 genes of M28 strains of GAS required for myositis

A 51-year-old woman presented to our facility with an open wound in the left breast. This was associated with a hard, non-mobile, tender lesion palpable underneath. The wound contained central necrosis with surrounding purulent discharge and accompanying erythema. Following radical debridement of the breast down to the pectoralis fascia the patient had a vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) device dressing applied. Histological examination was consistent with necrotizing fasciitis of the breast.

The genus Apophysomyces belonging to the order Mucorales is increasingly being reported as a cause of mucormycosis in immunocompetent patients. We report a case of necrotizing fasciitis caused by Apophysomyces variabilis in a 52-year-old immunocompetent male who sustained thermal burn in his right leg following a road-traffic accident. There was rapidly progressive necrosis of skin, soft tissues and underlying muscles which required extensive surgical debridement. Microscopic examination of excised tissues revealed broad aseptate fungal hyphae. Fungal culture on Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) s
