Preschool irritability predicts child psychopathology, functional impairment, and service use at age nine.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the predictive validity and clinical significance of chronic irritability during early childhood. This prospective, longitudinal study examined associations of preschool chronic irritability with psychiatric disorders, functional impairment, and service use at age nine in a large community sample. METHODS: Four hundred and forty-six children were assessed at age three and again at age nine. Child psychopathology and functional impairment were assessed at age three with the Preschool Age Psychiatric Assessment (PAPA) with parents and at age nine with the Kiddi

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis for a known cryptic translocation: follow-up clinical report and implication of segregation products.

This report describes preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) of a couple with a known paternally-derived balanced cryptic translocation 46,XY.ish t(2q;17q)(210E14-,B37c1+;B37c1-,210E14+) in embryos from a couple who previously had a child with severe mental retardation and was previously described in this journal [Bacino et al., 2000]. This child inherited the unbalanced product of translocation from her father: 46,XX.ish der(2)t(2q;17q)pat(210E14-,B37c1+). The couple desired a normal offspring and sought PGD to avoid clinical pregnancy termination. They were treated three times with in vitro

The roots of paternal depression: Experienced and nonexperienced trauma or Folie a Deux?

The transition to fatherhood may be challenged with anxiety and trepidation. A high prevalence has been found for paternal depression and it is reactive to maternal depression. This review aims to address potential sources of paternal depression, which may have adverse consequences on child development. We describe through three hypotheses how fathers may be at risk of depression during the transition to fatherhood: (1) psychological (interacting with ecological systems); (2) brain functional∖structural changes; and (3) (epi)genomic. We propose that paternal stressful experiences during the tr

Oxytocin receptor gene polymorphisms (rs53576) and early paternal care sensitize males to distressing female vocalizations.

The oxytocinergic system is highly involved in social bonding and early caregiver-infant interactions. Here, we hypothesize that oxytocin receptor (OXTR) gene genotype and parental bonding history interact in influencing social development. To address this question, we assessed adult males' arousal (heart rate changes) in response to different distress vocalizations (human female, human infant and bonobo). Region rs53576 of the OXTR gene was genotyped from buccal mucosa cell samples, and a self-report Parental Bonding Instrument was used (which provide information about parental care or parent

The impact of father-son relationship on suicidal ideation in Chinese gay and bisexual men: the mediating role of masculinity and self-esteem.

BACKGROUND: In China, gay and bisexual men exhibit higher levels of suicidal ideation than their heterosexual counterparts do. The influence of the father–son relationship on mental health within this group remains understudied. This study aims to explore the interplay between the father‒son relationship and suicidal ideation and examine the potential mediating roles of masculinity and self-esteem in this relationship among young Chinese gay and bisexual men. METHODS: We conducted a survey involving 302 cisgender gay and bisexual young men (mean age = 23.99, SD = 3.68) and 250 cisgender hetero

A Mixed Methods Approach to Understand Mother-Father Relationship and Perceived Stress Among Black Pregnant Women.

BACKGROUND: Black women in the United States report moderate to high levels of perceived stress during pregnancy. Though lower levels of involvement and support from father of the baby (FOB) and higher levels of conflict have been associated with higher levels of maternal perceived stress, it is not clear how Black pregnant women experience the mother-father relationship and its influence on perceived stress. PURPOSE: To examine and describe the mother-father relationship and its role in experiences of perceived stress from the perspective of Black pregnant women. METHODS: Using a convergent

Limitations to intergenerational inheritance: subchronic paternal stress preconception does not influence offspring anxiety.

Independent studies have observed that a paternal history of stress or trauma is associated with his children having a greater likelihood of developing psychopathologies such as anxiety disorders. This father-to-child effect is reproduced in several mouse models of stress, which have been crucial in developing a greater understanding of intergenerational epigenetic inheritance. We previously reported that treatment of C57Bl/6J male breeders with low-dose corticosterone (CORT) for 28 days prior to mating yielded increased anxiety-related behaviours in their male F1 offspring. The present study

Effectiveness of psychosocial interventions for reducing parental substance misuse.

BACKGROUND: Parental substance use is a substantial public health and safeguarding concern. There have been a number of trials of interventions relating to substance-using parents that have sought to address this risk factor, with potential outcomes for parent and child. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions in reducing parental substance use (alcohol and/or illicit drugs, excluding tobacco). SEARCH METHODS: We searched the following databases from their inception to July 2020: the Cochrane Drugs and Alcohol Group Specialised Register; CENTRAL; MEDLINE; Embase

Parental marital disruption and intergenerational transfers: an analysis of lone elderly parents and their children.

Although one of the most marked demographic trends observed over the twentieth century is the increased rate of divorce, relatively little research has explored the effects of these changing marital patterns in the context of an aging society. Using a sample of lone elderly parents and their adult children, we analyze the direct and indirect effects of marital disruption on four important dimensions of intergenerational transfers: coresidence, financial assistance, adult children's provision of informal care, and parental purchase of paid care. Our findings suggest that divorce has deleterious

Parents of children with chronic health problems: programs of nursing research and their relationship to developmental science.

This review identified nurse researchers and research teams that have current programs of research focused on parents and parenting of children with chronic health problems. Researchers were included if they had at least five publications since 1990, with at least three of these articles first-authored. These programs of research were critiqued from a developmental science perspective. Multiple methods were used for the search, including examination of previous review articles, hand search of journals, online computer searches, and review of the curriculum vitae of authors. Seven programs of r

Association of Maternal and Paternal Depression in the Postnatal Period With Offspring Depression at Age 18 Years.

IMPORTANCE: Paternal depression during the postnatal period has been associated with adverse child outcomes. Family environment has been reported as a pathway for risk transmission from fathers to children. The influence of paternal depression during the postnatal period on offspring depression remains to be clarified. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between paternal depression in the postnatal period and offspring depression and explore potential mediating and moderating factors that influence any association between paternal and offspring depression. [Dreams and imaginations in the therapy of eating disordered patients].

Recently the integrative approach has been applied in the treatment of eating disorders with multicausal origin. In order to achieve long-term therapeutic effect, the psychodynamic interpretation is often needed and favoured as a part of the personal, multimodal therapeutic strategy. The present paper focuses on body image distortion as one of the most decisive and least influenceable symptom of the disorder. The symptom is interpreted along the body image distortion-body boundaries-self boundaries-autonomy line. With illustrative therapy details of dreams, imaginations, the authors aim to dem

Case Report: Pediatric Recurrent Acute Liver Failure Caused by Neuroblastoma Amplified Sequence (NBAS) Gene Mutations.

Acute liver failure (ALF) in childhood is a rapidly progressive, potentially life-threatening condition that occurs in previously healthy children of all ages. However, the etiology of ~50% of cases with pediatric ALF remains unknown. We herein report a 4-year-old Chinese girl with recurrent ALF (RALF) due to a mutation in the neuroblastoma amplified sequence (NBAS) gene. The patient had suffered from multiple episodes of fever-related ALF since early childhood. She had also suffered from acute kidney injury, hypertension, mild pulmonary hypertension, pleural effusion, and hypothyroidism. A no

Male gender identity and sexual behaviour.

One consequence of a heightened interest in intersubjectivity in the current psychoanalytic literature has been a relative neglect of the examination of unconscious fantasies. Presenting material from the analysis of three males, each of whom, in childhood and/or adolescence, hid his penis between his legs and looked at himself in a mirror naked, the author demonstrates the importance of attending to both unconscious fantasies and their manifestations within the interactive field of analysis. The first patient is a young child with a gender identity disorder, whose wish to be like his mother w

[Parent-child-interaction based diagnostic in high risk families with infants and toddlers].

This article deals with methods and instruments used to identify high risk parents and early developing risks of infants and young children during the pre- and postnatal period in order to develop early intervention strategies based on early diagnosis in the context of parent-child-relationship. The specific experiences of our research approaches, funded by the German ministry of education and research (BMBF) from 2003 to 2007 at the University of Applied Sciences in Potsdam in cooperation with the parent counselling centre "Vom Säugling zum Kleinkind" are reflected. An interaction and communi

Biologics and small molecules in the management of psoriatic arthritis: Reproduction related issues in female and male patients.

STRACTBackground: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is the musculoskeletal manifestation of psoriatic disease, an inflammatory systemic disease with a high incidence in the reproductive years. Biologic and targeted synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) as well as 'small molecules', are increasingly used to treat subtypes of PsA. Safety concerns exist in the field of fertility for PsA patients since the literature shows discordant results toward the influence of anti-psoriatic drugs.Areas covered: This comprehensive review critically reviews the available data on the safety of biolog
