Effect of vacuum-release teat versus standard teat use on feeding milestones and breastfeeding outcomes in very preterm infants: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Breast milk is important to infant health, yet shorter breastfeeding duration is reported for preterm infants. Both breast and bottle feeds are given in the neonatal unit, with full oral feeding often the last milestone to be achieved prior to discharge home. Unlike standard bottle teats, a vacuum release teat requires the application of negative intra-oral pressure to release milk, and so may facilitate breastfeeding in preterm infants. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of vacuum release teat use on timing of achievement of the first full oral feed and on fir

QuEChERS methodology and Gas Chromatography-mass spectrometry for detection of 345 pesticide residues in Egyptian poultry feed: a comprehensive study.

Animal feed significantly influences the content and quality of animal products consumed by humans and plays a crucial role in the food chain. To simultaneously analyze 345 pesticide residues in poultry feed, a modified Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe (QuEChERS) method was developed, utilizing gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). Validation studies were conducted with spiked pesticide standards, and commercial poultry feed samples were analyzed. The linearity of the QuEChERS method was evaluated, showing high coefficients of determination (R2 ≥0.995) for all

Initiation of adaptive feeding within 24 h after burn injury improves nutritional therapy for severely burned patients.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Nutritional therapy is a crucial component of treatment for severely burned patients. Although overly aggressive enteral nutrition immediately after burn injury has potential risks, nutritional disruption after a severe burn can also increase infection risk and delay wound healing. For approximately six decades, the Ruijin Hospital Burn Center has used two distinct approaches for patients during the early period after burn injury: complete fasting or adaptive feeding. Notably, adaptive feeding more closely resembles enteral nutrition. In this retrospective study, we

A Dog's Dinner: Factors affecting food choice and feeding practices for UK dog owners feeding raw meat-based or conventional cooked diets.

INTRODUCTION: Food selection is an area of dog ownership where owners have direct control over their pet's wellbeing. While commercial cooked complete foods remain the majority component of many dog diets, there is increasing interest in alternative options including natural and raw ingredients. This study aimed to provide further data regarding feeding practices and diet choice for UK dog owners with a focus on raw meat diets. METHODS: An online survey available to all UK dog owners and advertised through sources including social media and at Crufts was conducted from February to March 2020.

The role of the nurse in support of breast feeding.

The nurse can provide information about, and support of, breast feeding. The prenatal nurse can inform the mother of the advantages of breast feeding to herself and her baby. The labour and delivery nurse can aid the mother in her first contact with the baby and reassure the mother who has a Caesarean birth, or a premature or sick infant, that she too can nurse. The postpartum nurse can help breast feeding to continue by providing frequent maternal-infant contact during the mother's hospital stay. The nursery nurse supports breast feeding by refraining from giving the baby other fluids. The pa

Feeding strategies for premature infants: beneficial outcomes of feeding fortified human milk versus preterm formula.

BACKGROUND: In a large-scale study of feeding strategies in premature infants (early vs later initiation of enteral feeding, continuous vs bolus tube-feeding, and human milk vs formula), the feeding of human milk had more effect on the outcomes measured than any other strategy studied. Therefore, this report describes the growth, nutritional status, feeding tolerance, and health of participating premature infants who were fed fortified human milk (FHM) in comparison with those who were fed exclusively preterm formula (PF). METHODS: Premature infants were assigned randomly in a balanced two-wa

INTRODUCTION: United States national guidelines around infant feeding in the setting of maternal HIV were updated significantly in 2023. The updated guidelines encourage evidence-based counseling and emphasize shared decision-making around infant feeding, supplanting a blanket recommendation for replacement feeding. This scoping review seeks to capture the shift in clinical practices and perspectives of people living with HIV and their healthcare providers since 2023. METHODS: Our review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) extension for sco

Tube Feeding Duration Associated with Socioeconomic Factors in Infants with Congenital Heart Disease: Single Center Study.

Infants with congenital heart disease are often discharged home with tube feeding after undergoing cardiac surgery. Clinical factors have been shown to impact tube feeding duration after cardiac surgery, but there is less information about how socioeconomic factors impact tube feeding duration. This retrospective cohort study was conducted among infants who underwent congenital heart disease surgery within 60 days of birth and were discharged from the hospital with tube feeding from 2016 to 2023 (N = 102). Tube feeding duration, neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES), self-reported race and e
