Separation from the CDC and its consequences for the public health workforce: findings from the CDC WISE Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Since January 2025, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shed more than one-quarter of its workforce through layoffs, contract cancellations, and fellowship terminations, raising urgent questions about the consequences for affected individuals and for national public health capacity. METHODS: We surveyed 430 former CDC employees, contractors, and fellows to examine the economic, health, and psychological impacts of these separations. RESULTS: Among respondents representing over 7300 combined years of public health experience, nearly 80% experienced involunta

Earnings Quality Measures and Excess Returns.

This paper examines how commonly used earnings quality measures fulfill a key objective of financial reporting, i.e., improving decision usefulness for investors. We propose a stock-price-based measure for assessing the quality of earnings quality measures. We predict that firms with higher earnings quality will be less mispriced than other firms. Mispricing is measured by the difference of the mean absolute excess returns of portfolios formed on high and low values of a measure. We examine persistence, predictability, two measures of smoothness, abnormal accruals, accruals quality, earnings r

DRG payment for long-term ventilator patients--revisited.

This article provides a follow-up to an evaluation originally presented in Chest of the financial impact of diagnosis related group (DRG) payment for long-term ventilator-dependent Medicare patients at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center. Since the results of our original study were presented, the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) has created two new DRGs for patients who have respiratory principal diagnoses to help recognize the resource intensiveness associated with mechanical ventilator support. The original 95 patients' payment, which was originally calculated to be $2.2

Secondary Caregiving in Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias: A Scoping Review of Their Challenges and Contributions.

The experiences, roles, key contributions, and support provided by secondary caregivers of people with dementia are underexplored when compared to primary caregivers. This scoping review mapped the existing literature on secondary caregivers. The review followed the PRISMA-ScR framework. Data was subtracted to focus on caregiving outcomes, and on thematic patterns across both qualitative and quantitative designs. Findings from the selected articles (N = 10) indicated that secondary caregivers provide emotional, logistical, and financial support. They also experienced psychological distress, gu…

Challenges to accessing behaviour support services for people with intellectual disability before and after the NDIS.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the extent to which behaviour support services are accessible under Australia's National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). METHOD: We conducted semi-structured interviews with families who support a member with an intellectual disability and challenging behaviour. We analysed this data with a supply and demand access framework initially designed for health care and described the lived experiences of participants and their families accessing behaviour supports. Results show that while the NDIS has improved participants' ability to pay for behaviour (and ot

Public assistance program and food diversity among older people: a cross-sectional study using the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study data : Public assistance program and food diversity.

BACKGROUND: Food diversity plays an important role in people's healthy and affluent lives. However, poverty and eating alone can create multi-dimensional barriers to food diversity. Although public assistance programs guarantee a minimum income to people in need, financial support alone may not be sufficient to support the health of people in poverty. This study aimed to identify the differences in food diversity intake between older recipients of public assistance and non-recipients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilized data from the Japanese Gerontological Evaluation Study (2022), i…

A qualitative exploration of the reasons and influencing factors for pregnancy termination among young women in Soweto, South Africa: a Socio-ecological perspective.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy termination is an essential component of reproductive healthcare. In Southern Africa, an estimated 23% of all pregnancies end in termination of pregnancy, against a backdrop of high rates of unintended pregnancies and unsafe pregnancy terminations, which contributes to maternal morbidity and mortality. Understanding the reasons for pregnancy termination may remain incomplete if seen in isolation of interpersonal (including family, peer, and partner), community, institutional, and public policy factors. This study therefore aimed to use a socio-ecological framework to qual

Evaluating quality of life changes in patients with cleft lip or palate: a mixed method pre- and postsurgical analysis in Karachi.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) is the most common orofacial congenital disability, presenting significant medical, psychological, and social challenges. In Pakistan, the incidence of CLP is high, estimated at one in 523 live births, but accurate data are lacking due to the absence of a birth registry. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for improving outcomes. This study evaluated the impact of CLP on patients' quality of life in Karachi, comparing pre- and post-surgical phases. METHODS: A sequential exploratory quantitative-qualitative mixed-methods study was conducted at

Fear of diagnosis as a barrier to the screening and diagnosis of breast cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer diagnosis primarily occurs through mammography and biopsy. Treatment options span from surgery to chemotherapy, contingent on the cancer stage. While preventative measures such as lifestyle adjustments like weight management and reduced alcohol intake can reduce cases of breast cancer, challenges persist in accessing timely screening and treatment, especially in low- and middle-income areas of the country. METHODS: This survey engaged 59 US mothers 16 years and older with breast cancer. Administered to ensure distinct responses, it included questions covering family

Beyond the hospital: family caregivers' experiences in supporting stroke recovery in Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke remains a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability globally, with profound consequences for both survivors and their families. In Ghana, where formal post-stroke rehabilitation and long-term care services are limited, family caregivers play a central role in supporting stroke survivors. However, there is limited qualitative evidence on how caregivers understand stroke and experience caregiving within their sociocultural context, creating a gap in knowledge needed to inform context-specific interventions. METHODS: This qualitative study explored the experiences

Caregivers' Perceptions of the Impact of Palliative Care: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Population aging and the rising prevalence of multimorbidity have contributed to increased levels of dependency, placing informal caregivers at the forefront of home-based care delivery. Although palliative care (PC) aims to support both patients and their families, evidence regarding caregivers' own perceptions and experiences of this role remains limited. Furthermore, the extent to which community PC teams shape caregivers' lived experience is still insufficiently understood. METHODS: This qualitative phenomenological study involved conducting four semi-structured interviews w
