Induction of vitreolysis and vitreous detachment with hyaluronidase and perfluoropropane gas.

To simulate the posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) in the rabbit, 1 IU hyaluronidase and/or 0.2 ml of perfluoropropane gas was intravitreally injected. Ophthalmoscopic, light microscopic examination prepared by cryotechnique, electron microscopic examination, and electroretinogram were done on the 3rd and 28th postoperative days. As a result, the eyes undergone simultaneous intravitreal injection of 1 IU hyaluronidase and 0.2 ml perfluoropropane gas showed membranous structure split from the internal limiting membrane of the superior retina in 3 days after injection. The eyes also demonstrate

Potential role of PFOB enhanced sonography of the kidney. II. Detection of partial infarction.

Aside from its ability to assess flow velocity within vessels, color Doppler and gray-scale sonography cannot distinguish perfused from non-perfused tissues. In this study we evaluated whether Perfluorooctylbromide (PFOB), a sonographic contrast agent given i.v., could aid sonography with this recognition. Partial renal infarction was produced by a 1 mm bead embolized in the right, the left, or both renal arteries of 20 normal rabbits. The sonographer, unaware of rabbit assignment, attempted to diagnose the infarct 24 hours later. All 20 rabbits were studied with gray-scale and color Doppler s

Sweat lactate threshold heart rate monitoring based on multi-parameter electrochemical sensing and lactate excretion rate analysis.

Lactate is an important biomarker for assessing anaerobic metabolism and exercise intensity, and its continuous non-invasive monitoring is valuable for sports medicine and rehabilitation. However, sweat-based lactate sensing still faces two major challenges: the physiological interpretation of sweat signals remains under discussion, and sensor stability is often limited under dynamic conditions. In this work, we developed a flexible enzymatic electrochemical sensing platform based on toluidine blue O (TBO) and a Nafion cation-exchange membrane. The electrostatic interaction between the sulfona

Differential toxicity of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in wild-type and Oatp1d1 mutant zebrafish larvae.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is a persistent and bioaccumulative member of the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) family widely used in various industrial applications and consumer products. In this study we present a comprehensive analysis of the effects of PFOS exposure on zebrafish embryos with respect to possible role of the organic anion transporting polypeptide 1d1 (Oatp1d1) membrane transporter, focusing on the differential responses between wild-type (WT) and Oatp1d1 mutant embryos. Significant differences in mortality rates were observed, with LC50 values of 23.57 μM for W

Gut-ovary axis mediated synergistic reproductive toxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics and perfluorobutanoic acid co-exposure: pyroptotic signaling and probiotic mitigation.

Polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPLs) and perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) are pervasive contaminants of great concern and can enter human body primarily through gastrointestinal tract. However, their single and combined effects on female reproductive health remain poorly explored. In this study, PFBA was found to be adsorbed onto PS-NPLs through both chemical and physical interactions. Compared with single exposure, co-exposure to PS-NPLs (0.04 mg/d) and PFBA (0.28 mg/d) for 28 days caused more severe ovarian toxicity in rats, as evidenced by decreased primordial follicles, increased follicular atr

Regional assessment of PFAS in drinking water in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach, South Florida: Implications for environmental exposure and exploratory links with liver cancer mortality.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent anthropogenic contaminants of growing environmental and public health concerns. This study presents a regional assessment of PFAS contamination in tap water (n = 147) across 18 ZIP codes in Miami-Dade (MD) and 22 ZIP codes in Palm Beach (PB) counties, South Florida, U.S., selected according to liver cancer mortality quartiles to explore potential PFAS exposure-health associations. Sixteen PFAS were analyzed using solid phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Concentrations were higher in MD

Association of F-53B Nephrotoxicity with Oxidative Stress-Mediated Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Altered Autophagy-Apoptosis Crosstalk.

6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (F-53B, also known as 6:2 Cl-PFESA) is a major alternative to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and a widespread environmental pollutant with potential public health hazards. However, its nephrotoxic effects and underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigated renal injury induced by environmentally relevant concentrations of F-53B and delineated the mechanistic cascade using a mouse model combined with quantitative proteomic and molecular biological approaches. Male C57BL/6 mice were exposed to 0, 4, 40, and 400 μ

Combined pollution risk of partially fluorinated microplastics: Strong interaction with organic arsenic revealed by quantum chemical calculations.

The fluorination degree of microplastics significantly influences their environmental behavior and combined pollution risks. This study employed quantum chemical calculations to explore the adsorption mechanisms of p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA) onto non-fluorinated polyethylene (PE), partially fluorinated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), and perfluorinated polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) microplastics. PVDF displayed the strongest interaction energy (-43.1 kJ/mol) with p-ASA, higher than those of PE (-32.3 kJ/mol) and PTFE (-25.5 kJ/mol), indicating its greater potential for combined pollution risk.

Impact of perfluorooctanoic acid on sperm function and early development in Prochilodus magdalenae: implications for aquatic species reproduction.

Given the well-documented capacity of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) to induce endocrine alterations, this study aimed to investigate the toxicity of PFOA on sperm kinetics and larval viability of Prochilodus magdalenae (bocachico), Colombia's most economically significant freshwater fish species. Gametes were obtained through hormonal induction of P. magdalenae broodstock, and in vitro fertilization was performed to obtain larvae. The semen was activated either with water or water containing different PFOA concentrations (10-500 µM). Sperm motility (both total and specific types), progressivit

Fate and effects of flupyradifurone and sulfoxaflor on non-target soil-dwelling invertebrates.

Flupyradifurone and sulfoxaflor are 2 novel insecticides registered for global use. They were developed as alternates to neonicotinoids, and their subsequent use restrictions, based on impacts on non-target organisms. Although structurally distinct, both alternatives share the same mode of action as neonicotinoids, raising concerns about their potential risks to non-target soil invertebrates. The fate and toxicity of flupyradifurone and sulfoxaflor in soil were assessed, tested both as pure chemicals and in commercial formulations (Sivanto™ Prime and Closer™ Insecticide, respectively). The hal

Spatial-temporal patterns of perfluoroalkyl substances in the biota of the Laurentian Great Lakes: A meta-analysis.

To better understand the dynamics of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in complex freshwater ecosystems, we performed a systematic meta-analysis of PFAS distributions and spatiotemporal variance in biota of the Laurentian Great Lakes watersheds. We reviewed 50 publications that contained 2489 records (primarily of fish and birds) spanning 42 years of biological sampling. Using this dataset, we built generalized additive models for six compounds-perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and five perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs)-routinely detected in biological tissues. Estimated conce

Environmental toxins, PFAS exposure, and brain metabolism: A new angle in Alzheimer's disease pathophysiology.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease with a complicated cause and effect, usually associated with amyloid-β plaques, tau pathology, and neuroinflammation. Recent research indicates that changes in brain energy metabolism play a crucial role in the progression of AD. Additionally, persistent environmental toxins, particularly per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), have attracted considerable attention due to their widespread occurrence, ability to accumulate in living organisms, and neurotoxic effects. This chapter explores the connection between PFAS exposur
