Comment on Rodríguez-Cortés et al. Individual Circadian Preference, Eating Disorders and Obesity in Children and Adolescents: A Dangerous Liaison? A Systematic Review and a Meta-Analysis. Children 2022, 9, 167.

This commentary critically examines the article by Rodríguez-Cortés et al. on the links between circadian preferences, eating disorders, and obesity in pediatric populations, emphasizing the association between evening chronotypes and disordered eating behaviors. Key findings highlight the increased prevalence of food addiction (FA) and night eating syndrome (NES) among evening-oriented children and adolescents, though the article's reliance on studies with adult samples limits the generalizability of its conclusions. Additionally, the ambiguous classification of FA and NES within broader eati

Association Between Time Preferences and Masticatory Function in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Eating is fundamental to life, encompassing not only nutritional intake but also emotional, social and communicative functions. Since the global ageing population grows, assessing eating ability-related issues, particularly masticatory dysfunction, is of significance. Masticatory dysfunction impairs food absorption, elevates the risk of choking and contributes to malnutrition. Time preferences, such as time discounting and present bias, influence health behaviours and may be related to masticatory function; however, this relation remains unclear. OBJECTIVE(S): This study aimed to

Sex and Age Differences in the Effects of Food Frequency on Metabolic Parameters in Japanese Adults.

Owing to differences in dietary preferences between men and women, the associations between dietary intake frequency and metabolic parameters may differ between the sexes. A retrospective observational study of the checkup findings of 3147 Japanese individuals (968 men, 2179 women) aged 20-59 years was conducted to examine differences in dietary habits and associations between food frequency and blood parameters (eGFR, HbA1c, uric acid, and lipids) by sex and age. Males were more likely to consume meat, fish, soft drinks, and alcohol, whereas women were more likely to consume soybeans, dairy p

The effect of adolescent inhalant abuse on energy balance and growth.

The abuse of volatile solvents such as toluene is a significant public health concern, predominantly affecting adolescents. To date, inhalant abuse research has primarily focused on the central nervous system; however, inhalants also exert effects on other organ systems and processes, including metabolic function and energy balance. Adolescent inhalant abuse is characterized by a negative energy balance phenotype, with the peak period of abuse overlapping with the adolescent growth spurt. There are multiple components within the central and peripheral regulation of energy balance that may be a

Behavioral effects of amphetamine in streptozotocin-treated rats.

Experimentally-induced diabetes can modify the behavioral and neurochemical effects of drugs acting on dopamine systems, possibly through insulin-related regulation of dopamine transporter activity. In this study, several behavioral procedures were used to examine possible changes in sensitivity to amphetamine and other drugs in rats rendered diabetic by a single injection of streptozotocin. Conditioned place preference developed to food (Froot Loops) in both control and diabetic rats, demonstrating that conditioned place preference with tactile stimuli can occur in streptozotocin-treated rats

Dietary preference, biological aging, and incident dementia: a prospective cohort study.

Dietary patterns are modifiable determinants of dementia risk, but the interactions between individual dietary preference profiles, biological aging, and dementia risk remain unclear. We aimed to investigate associations of dietary preference profiles with biological aging and incident dementia, as well as the potential modifying effect of genetic susceptibility. Dietary preference profiles were identified using latent profile analysis on food preferences questionnaire data. Cox models estimated the association between dietary preferences and dementia risk and their interaction with genetic ri…

Exploring the Association Between Multidimensional Dietary Patterns and Non-Scarring Hair Loss Using Mendelian Randomization.

BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and alopecia areata (AA) impose significant psychosocial burdens. While pharmacological and surgical treatments exist, the role of dietary factors remains underexplored due to methodological limitations in observational studies. This Mendelian randomization (MR) study investigates causal relationships between 187 dietary exposures and hair loss, leveraging genetic variants to address confounding biases. METHODS: Genome-wide association study (GWAS) data from 161,625 UK Biobank participants were analyzed, focusing on food preferences and intake patterns.…

Significance of additives to enhance the acceptance of poison bait in poultry rodents of Haripur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

Rodent infestation on poultry farms incurs heavy economic losses to this industry by causing feed loss and disease introduction. Development and continuous improvement of rodents control techniques are vital to minimize and control the damages caused by rodents. Here, we test the feed preference of rodents for locally available and palatable food grains viz. millet (whole), wheat (cracked) and rice (broken) and taste additives namely whole egg (5%), eggshell (5%), peanut cracked (5%) and yeast (2%) that were offered mixed in millet-wheat (50:50 by wt.) bait. We tested the preferences of differ

XiangshaLiujunzi decoction alleviates the symptoms of functional dyspepsia by regulating brain-gut axis and production of neuropeptides.

BACKGROUND: Chinese medicine xiangshaliujunzi decoction (XSLJZD) plays a key role in treating functional dyspepsia (FD), a common clinical gastrointestinal disorder. However, the mechanism of this disease is unclear. Brain-gut axis regulates food intake behaviour, and this regulatory mechanism is mediated by neuropeptides. Brain-gut axis impairment and neuropeptide alteration may be the pathological mechanisms of FD, and brain-gut axis regulation may influence the action of medicine. METHODS: In our experiment, the effect of XSLJZD on FD was evaluated in terms of food intake, sucrose preferen

Interleukin-10 (IL-10) but not Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) produces increased motor activity and abnormal exploratory patterns while impairing spatial learning in Balb/c mice.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a potent endotoxin, which produces "sickness behaviours" including loss of weight, loss of interest in food and decreased exploration. LPS has also been shown in some studies to cause deficits in various learning and memory abilities, while in others these LPS-induced learning impairments have been attributed to performance-related deficits rather than learning deficits per se. Here, we use the novelty-preference paradigm, a task that minimises performance-related factors such as motivation, in an attempt to extract and examine the effects of LPS on spatial learning

Wheat Flour Intake Promotes Weight Gain and Metabolic Changes in Mice.

This study examined the metabolic effects of wheat flour intake on body weight regulation in mice. Male and female C57BL/6 mice were given free access to standard chow and wheat-based foods, including bread and baked wheat flour, and food preference, energy expenditure, hepatic gene expression, and blood metabolite profiles were analyzed. Mice showed a strong preference for wheat-based foods, leading to significant body weight gain despite comparable caloric intake. Wheat flour consumption was associated with reduced energy expenditure, increased adiposity, and elevated circulating insulin and
