Our objective was to assess the incidence, risk factors and clinical outcomes of dehiscence after foot surgery in diabetic patients. We used pooled patient-level data from two randomised clinical trials with 240 diabetic patients who required foot surgery for infections. Most patients (n = 180, 75.0%) had surgical wound closure. We defined dehisced surgical wounds (DSW) when the surgical site was not completely epithelialized with no drainage after sutures/staples were removed with a 2-week validation of healing. We evaluated the time to heal, re-infection, re-ulceration, hospital admissions a…

Objective: Our objective is to investigate the risk factors and predictive ability of severe diabetic foot (DF) and diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). Patients & methods: The efficacy of cystatin C in predicting the recurrence of DF and DFU was evaluated using a receiver operating characteristic curve. Results: The findings indicate that, in contrast to non-severe patients, severe cases exhibit elevated levels of cystatin C (p < 0.05). Additionally, a statistically significant increase in cystatin C levels was observed in the subgroup of patients with recurrent DFU (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Cystatin C…

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulceration (DFU) has become an increasingly common emergency presentation. These patients are presenting at a younger age and with increasingly complex co-morbidities. They require frequent hospitalisation for management of DFU which has significant consequences for management of health resources but also for quality of life in the diabetic patient population.
AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the development of a coordinated, streamlined acute diabetic foot pathway for management of in-patients presenting as emergencies with DFU on length of s…

BACKGROUND: Individuals living with diabetes run an increased risk of developing diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), leading to high costs to society and reduced quality of life for the individual. Regular screening is important to avoid complications.
AIM: To evaluate patients' and clinicians' experiences of using a digital tool, the D-Foot, in the screening of risk factors for developing DFUs. The secondary aims were to investigate whether patients had had their feet examined by a nurse or doctor during the past year, had been referred to podiatry and whether patients had received information abou…

AIM OF THE STUDY: Foot pronation is often associated with increased internal rotation of the lower limb, predisposing the knee joint to greater stress. However, the impact of the pronated foot on knee joint laxity has not been well understood. The study aims to find out the effect of the pronated foot on knee joint laxity.
METHODS: Forty adult participants were recruited for the study: 20 with asymptomatic pronated foot and 20 control subjects with the normal arched foot. Foot assessments were performed by navicular drop test and rearfoot angle measurements. Knee joint laxity was measured by …

BACKGROUND: Collapse of the foot arch is a one of the risk factors in medial tibial stress syndrome. Custom-made foot orthoses are used to reduce the collapse of foot arch, but the orthoses are designed for a specific shoe and cannot be used in other shoes. We developed an elastic foot orthosis that is highly fitted on the foot using thin films, is lightweight, and can be used with any shoe or without shoes. The purpose of this study was to investigate foot kinematics with our elastic foot orthosis during walking and running.
METHODS: We recruited 30 participants with asymptomatic flatfoot fo…

Foot and ankle physicians in China encounter quite a large amount of severe and complex deformities. The main cause of severe ankle and foot deformity is trauma, while the other causes may be neuromuscular diseases, improper reduction and fixation and so on. Staged procedure may sometimes be a safer way to correct deformities in the presence of severe soft tissue contracture. Periarticular osteotomy combined with soft tissue balancing can be used in treating severe varus ankle arthritis, including stage IIIb cases and patients with talar tilt of more than 10 degrees.

BACKGROUND: The most common reasons for unplanned admission to the hospital from outpatient surgery have the potential to be minimised or eliminated by peripheral nerve blocks (PNB). Tourniquets are commonly used in elective extremity surgery but it's use is mostly guided by personal preferences and does no correlate with the existing literature. Our aim was to explore the current practice of PNB and tourniquet use by foot and ankle surgeons in Australia.
METHODS: The Australian Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgery Society (AOFAS) annual meeting was held in Adelaide in 2011. Members were asked …

Variations in foot posture are associated with the development of some lower limb injuries. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship are unclear. The objective of this study was to compare foot kinematics between normal, pes cavus and pes planus foot posture groups using a multi-segment foot model. Ninety-seven healthy adults, aged 18-47 were classified as either normal (n=37), pes cavus (n=30) or pes planus (n=30) based on normative data for the Foot Posture Index, Arch Index and normalised navicular height. A five segment foot model was used to measure tri-planar motion of the re…

Hinged ankle-foot orthoses are prescribed routinely for the treatment of ankle joint deficits, despite the conflicting outcomes and the little evidence on their functional efficacy. In particular, the axis of rotation of the hinge is positioned disregarding the physiological position and orientation. A multi-segment model was utilized to assess in vivo the effect of different positions for this axis on the kinematics of foot joints. A special custom-made hinged orthosis was manufactured via standard procedures for a young healthy volunteer. Four locations for the mechanical axis were obtained …

Diplopodia is a rare congenital anomaly and has been described as extra digits, metatarsals, and tarsal bones that form an extra foot or foot-like structure. Various skeletal deformities and anomalies involving other organ systems can accompany diplopodia. Treatment consists of surgery, splinting, and physical therapy, planned according to each patient's specific condition. We present a patient who had diplopodia with distinctive anatomic features (with postaxial polydactyly and without any anomaly of the tibia or fibula) compared with the previously reported cases, and concomitant anomalies, …
