BACKGROUND: The utilization of mesh reinforcement of the inguinal area with polypropylene mesh has increased drastically over the last decade. Infertility due to obstructive azoospermia is a rare but serious complication following inguinal hernia repair, especially in young patients. An experimental method to investigate pulmonary granuloma formation in the guinea pig was established. Animals sensitized to human serum albumin (HSA) and challenged intravenously with HSA covalently linked to Sepharose 2B beads developed a specific granulomatous response. This intense pulmonary arterial, focally necrotizing, but mainly granulomatous inflammatory reaction developed 5 to 7 days after the administration of the HSA-bead conjugate. We discuss clinical symptoms and radiological findings of variable esophageal foreign bodies as well as therapeutic procedures in Caucasian pediatric patients. A retrospective study of 192 cases of suspected esophageal foreign bodies between 1998 and 2010 was conducted. Data were statistically analyzed by chi-square test. A foreign body was removed from a digestive tract of 163 children aged 6 months to 15 years (mean age 4.9). Most objects were located within cricopharyngeal sphincter. Among 84 surgically resected arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), four were found to have refractile foreign particles lined by endothelium in the vessel walls. In three cases, this was associated with granuloma formation. The particles were probably introduced during cerebral angiography. They represent a not unusual pathologic finding, are relatively more common in AVMs than in other neurosurgically excised lesions, and may have clinical significance, especially if abundant.

We presented 2 cases of lipogranuloma of the cheek following autologous fat injection. Facial autologous fat injection for soft tissue augmentation is a frequently used technique in the field of plastic surgery. Although this procedure was thought to be a safe procedure without foreign body reactions, there had been several case reports on lipogranuloma following autologous fat injection, especially into the periorbital area. In our cases, we experienced delayed lipogranulomas of the cheek area and successfully treated them with perioral excision.

Pulse granulomas are rare foreign body reactions to vegetable material characterized by hyaline rings or starch granules. Pulse granulomas have mainly been reported in association with lung aspirations, the oral cavity with a history of oral procedures and less frequently in intestinal fistulae, colonic diverticulae or stomach ulcers. Only one case involving the skin has been reported in a patient with jejunocutaneous and ileocutaneous fistulae. We report the second cutaneous pulse granuloma in a patient with a rectocutaneous fistula.

BACKGROUND: Adjunctive dural sealants such as BioGlue® are widely used to reinforce dural closure in cranial and spinal surgery. While generally effective, BioGlue® has been associated with inflammatory foreign-body reactions that may lead to delayed mass formation and neural compression. These delayed complications can mimic the original pathology.
