BACKGROUND: The opening of the frontal sinus represents a challenge in primary and revision surgery of the paranasal sinuses.
RESULTS: Newly developed frontal sinus punches were used in 35 cases of primary or secondary surgery of the frontal sinus, with a post operative follow-up period of up to 18 months. So far, the results are promising.
CONCLUSIONS: Forward-cutting angled punches adapted to the anterior skull base have been developed to reduce the risk of trauma to mucosal structures when broadly exposing the frontal sinus through an anterior approach.

OBJECTIVE: Management of chronic frontal rhinosinusitis is challenging with high rates of treatment failure, exacerbated by limitations of topical irrigation delivery. We hypothesize that intraoperative zero-degree visualization of the frontal sinus predicts improved postoperative irrigation penetration. Extending a Draf IIa frontal sinusotomy with a limited resection of the middle turbinate axilla-agger nasi complex can allow zero-degree endoscopic visualization of the frontal sinus. This study investigates the change in frontal sinus irrigation delivery after standard Draf IIa frontal sinuso

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks located within the frontal sinus can be difficult to repair effectively. Additional challenges arise from the need to simultaneously repair the leak or defect and to ensure the future patency of the sinus itself.
METHODS: The cases of two patients who underwent surgical repair of CSF leaks and skull base defects located in difficult to access locations within their frontal sinuses were reviewed.
RESULTS: Two patients with CSF leaks in the frontal sinus underwent surgery to repair the leaks. The leaks were in the superomedial and superolateral locat

BACKGROUND: Nasal irrigations and topical sprays have been demonstrated to have benefit in chronic sinusitis. Increasingly, it is evident that delivery system, patient anatomy, and inflammatory process have significant impacts on irrigant distribution.
METHODS: Intrasinus endoscopy was performed during sinus irrigation of 5 thawed fresh frozen cadavers (10 sides) before and after transnasal dilation of the maxillary, frontal, and sphenoid ostia with a 5-mm balloon.
RESULTS: Guidewire insertion created false passages through maxillary fontanelle on all of 10 attempts; 1 of 10 frontal insertio

Osteoma of the paranasal sinuses is a benign, well-defined and slow-growing tumor arising most commonly from the frontal sinus. The ethmoid and maxillary sinuses are less frequently involved. Very seldom, it may involve the orbit, usually by direct extension from the adjacent paranasal sinuses. We report a case of a huge osteoma in right ethmoid and maxillary sinuses with orbital extension that was accompanied by diplopia in a 20-year-old, previously healthy man. An external approach to the involved sinuses was utilized to remove the tumor completely after a successful maxilloethmoidectomy. Th

Introduction: Canine sinonasal aspergillosis (SNA) can present singular as a primary disease or secondary to concurrent sinonasal pathology. We hypothesized that treatment response and prognosis differ between both forms, particularly when sinusitis is present. Methods: In this retrospective study, 30 dogs with SNA were categorized as either group pA (primary aspergillosis) or group sA (secondary aspergillosis; with additional sinonasal pathology). History, diagnostics, endoscopic therapeutic intervention of affected nose and sinus, and follow-up data were analyzed. Results: Group pA included

Frontal sinus analysis has potential utility for detecting biologically related individuals. However, the methodological approach to its evaluation, as well as its informative value, have been questioned. The aim of this work is to introduce a new approach to evaluating the frontal sinus using the 'external supraorbital line' (ESOL) and to determine whether there are sex differences within families in frontal sinus measurements and whether frontal sinus similarity reflects known genetic relationships in both measurements and morphology. We examined the skeletal remains of 41 adult individuals

BACKGROUND: The frontal bone is an anatomical structure of the skull separated by the metopic suture in the childhood. The scientific literature indicates that metopic suture consolidates with closure in the early stages of life. Metopism is the term used to describe a metopic suture that persists up to the adulthood. Persistent metopic suture is associated potentially with the agenesis of the frontal sinus.
AIM: To investigate the prevalence of absent frontal sinuses in dry skulls with metopism.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was performed after the approval of the local Committee

INTRODUCTION: Endonasal surgery of the frontal sinuses is associated with impaired mucosal integrity, the aerodynamics of the nasal cavity, the configuration of intranasal structures. At the stage of early postoperative period, it is important to achieve rapid epithelialization of the mucous membrane, with the restoration of the functioning of the mucociliary transport system, drainage and ventilation of the sinuses, nasal congestion and as a result, early clinical recovery of the patient.
AIM: to prove the clinical efficacy of formulations containing sodium hyaluronate in the postoperative p

Tricho-dento-osseous syndrome (TDO) is characterized by abnormal bone, hair, and tooth morphology. However, the reported craniofacial abnormalities are not well characterized. The purpose of this study was to compare the craniofacial parameters of 25 subjects affected with TDO (A) with those of 15 unaffected relatives (U). Standardized lateral cephalograms were traced and digitized. Each subject's data were compared by age and sex to cephalometric standards (Bolton, Behrents); severity was scored by standard deviations from the standard mean, and then grouped into A vs. U. All cephalograms wer

This prospective study was performed to evaluate the reliability of ultrasonography for the detection of fluid and mucosal swelling in the frontal sinus. The evaluation was based on a comparison of the preoperative ultrasonographic results with the surgical findings in 27 frontal sinuses. Ultrasonography was found to be a reliable method for the demonstration or exclusion of mucosal swelling and accumulated fluid (sensitivity 92%; specificity 93%).

We report a case of Pott's puffy tumour in a 12-year-old. Owing to the late development of the frontal sinuses, frontal sinus infection in children is rare. When present it can lead to osteomyelitis associated with forehead swelling. Early diagnosis and active treatment prevent progression to life-threatening intracranial spread.

Management of frontal sinus fracture has been a matter of debate. Combined fractures of the anterior and posterior walls have been managed by various techniques, including observation, open reduction and internal fixation, ablation, obliteration, and, most recently, cranialization. The earlier techniques have met with frequent complications, including sinusitis, mucopyocele, cerebrospinal fluid leak, meningitis, and brain abscess, along with various chronic pain symptoms. Cranialization of the frontal sinus was first introduced for injuries of both walls with intracranial penetration. From 199

The authors present five patients with mucocele, submitted to neurosurgery. Two had mucoceles spreading from the frontal and/or the anterior ethmoidal sinuses and had only compressive mass symptoms, either on the ocular globe or on the frontal lobe or on both. Three patients had mucoceles growing from the sphenoid and/or posterior ethmoidal sinuses. In these latter, the mass symptoms were less evident. All the patients suffered excruciating retro-ocular pain and two presented cranial nerve damage. The correct diagnosis in these cases is crucial to avoid a too aggressive treatment since these p
