The authors present the neuropathological and clinical findings of four cases of ceroid lipofuscinosis or Batten's disease. In two cases the autopsy findings showed brain atrophy and nerve cells packed with cytoplasmic granules compatible with lipofuscin. Histochemical analysis of frozen, thin sections revealed the distribution of alkaline phosphatase (ALPase) in 47 primary intracranial neoplasms in humans. The cytoplasm of meningioma cells exhibited the strongest ALPase reactivity. Pretreatment of these materials by levamisol indicated that the isozymes of ALPase had the characteristic liver-bone-kidney form. The interpretation of immunoperoxidase staining of frozen tissue sections can be severely limited by the presence of endogenous peroxidase enzymes in the tissue. Previously recommended methods of reducing this enzyme activity were examined, but were found to be unsatisfactory when applied to the small intestine. The nature and intensity of inflammatory cellular infiltrate in the implantation sites of 10 complete molar pregnancies were evaluated by immunohistochemical staining of frozen tissue sections with monoclonal antibodies. As compared to the implantation site in normal pregnancy, there was an increase in the number of infiltrating inflammatory cells in the molar implantation site. An extremely rare type of congenital malformation of the oesophagus with double atresia and a midportion oesophageal cyst without fistula is presented. The long course of its diagnosis and definitive management are discussed. The interposition of the "cystic" part between the upper and lower segments to produce continuity of the oesophagus by means of a double anastomosis is warranted only if the cyst is sizeable enough to allow a good anastomosis without tension. Furthermore immediate histological frozen sections should demonstrate the cyst to be a part of the oesophagus.

Activity of acid non-specific esterase (ANAE) in infiltrating lymphocytes in nine patients with mycosis fungoides and four patients with parapsoriasis en plaques was examined in frozen tissue sections. Within the dermal infiltrate 81.7 +/- 6.1% of all lymphocytes contain this enzyme in mycosis fungoides, 74.7 +/- 3.3% in parapsoriasis en plaques. Spindle epithelial tumour with thymus-like differentiation (SETTLE) is a very rare neck malignancy arising from thymic tissue or branchial pouch, mostly seen in the early decades of life. Transduodenal resection (TDR) of lesions near the ampulla of Vater is an alternative to the Whipple pancreaticoduodenectomy.
