KNTC1 and MCM2 are the molecular targets of gallbladder cancer.

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder carcinoma is a malignant epithelial tumor of gallbladder with a high degree of malignancy. However, relationship between KNTC1 and MCM2 and gallbladder cancer is unclear. METHODS: GSE139682 and GSE202479 were downloaded from gene expression omnibus (GEO). Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened. Functional enrichment analysis and gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) were performed. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) Network was constructed and analyzed. Gene expression heat map was drawn. Comparative toxicogenomics database (CTD) analysis was performed to fin

Percutaneous Transhepatic Cholecystolithotomy by Holmium Laser for Non-high-Risk Patients with Symptomatic Gallbladder Stones.

BACKGROUND: The development of gallstones, also known as cholelithiasis, is one of the most common diseases associated with the gastrointestinal tract. In developing countries 10% to 15% of men and >25% of women experience gallstones. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the outcomes following percutaneous transhepatic cholecystolithotomy by holmium laser in non-high-risk patients with symptomatic gallbladder stones. METHODS: This was an intervention study without control and with longitudinal follow-up. Subjects included patients who had only gallbladder stones, a normal gallblad

Subtypes of Native American ancestry and leading causes of death: Mapuche ancestry-specific associations with gallbladder cancer risk in Chile.

Latin Americans are highly heterogeneous regarding the type of Native American ancestry. Consideration of specific associations with common diseases may lead to substantial advances in unraveling of disease etiology and disease prevention. Here we investigate possible associations between the type of Native American ancestry and leading causes of death. After an aggregate-data study based on genome-wide genotype data from 1805 admixed Chileans and 639,789 deaths, we validate an identified association with gallbladder cancer relying on individual data from 64 gallbladder cancer patients, with a

A review of recent data in the treatment of gallbladder cancer: what we know, what we do, and what should be done.

Gallbladder cancer is now considered a distinct clinical entity, allowing for a separate analysis from that of other malignancies of the biliary tree. Symptoms related to a malignant tumor of the gallbladder include jaundice and abdominal pain, or a palpable abdominal mass that occurs in a late stage of the disease. The majority of patients with operable gallbladder cancer are diagnosed by cholecystectomy performed for presumed benign disease, mostly cholelithiasis, a clinical entity known as incidental gallbladder cancer. Given the poor prognosis if tumor invasion beyond the muscular layer an

Minimally invasive management of acute biliary tract disease during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Acute biliary diseases during pregnancy have been classically managed conservatively. Advances in minimally invasive surgery and the high recurrence rate of symptoms observed changed this management. METHODS: This is a prospective observational study. Initial management was medical. Unresponsive patients were treated with minimally invasive techniques including gallbladder percutaneous aspiration or cholecystostomy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiography, and laparoscopic cholecystectomy, depending on the pregnancy trimester and underlying diagnosis. RESULTS: 122 patients were adm

Pathogenetic interrelations between cholesterolosis and cholesterol gallstone disease.

In order to define the relationship between cholesterolosis (COL) and cholesterol gallstone disease (CGD), risk factors were comparatively investigated in a great number of patients. Sex, age and metabolic risk factors were the same for both diseases, but gallbladder anomalies and neuroendocrine disturbances were more often associated with COL. The lipid composition of the gallbladder bile was determined in patients with COL. The bile acid decrease and the increase of cholesterol molar concentration (moles %) were found, similar to those known in CGD. The similarity of risk factors and of bile

Abdominal ultrasound in patients with acute right upper quadrant pain.

Ultrasonography was performed as the first imaging procedure in 100 patients who presented with acute right upper quadrant pain suggestive of cholecystitis or cholelithiasis. In the final analysis 46 patients were found to have gallbladder disease (40 patients with cholelithiasis, 5 with acalculous cholecystitis, and 1 with a cholesterol polyp in the gallbladder). In 22 of 54 patients with a normal gallbladder, other abdominal disease was found. The error rate for ultrasound was 5%, and in 4 patients ultrasound was not the suitable procedure for the diagnosis. In 91 patients the ultrasonograph

A gallbladder torsion presenting as acute cholecystitis in an elderly woman: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Gallbladder torsion is a rare, but potentially lethal disease, in which early recognition is crucial. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of an 89-year-old Caucasian woman who presented with clinical symptoms suggestive of acute cholecystitis to our hospital. Radiological imaging confirmed our clinical diagnosis. At first we considered percutaneous gallbladder drainage because of her age and comorbidity, but instead performed laparoscopic cholecystectomy because of rapid clinical deterioration. During laparoscopy a necrotic gallbladder due to torsion of the gallbladder aroun

Study on cases of nonvisualized cholecystogram by the use of ERCP.

We used Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in 77 patient in whom oral cholecystography failed to visualize the gallbladder. ERCP did not visualize the gallbladder in 42%, and poorly visualized it in 58%, however, there was no significant difference in the disease distribution between non- and poorly visualized cases. 63 of the 77 patients underwent surgery. In cases postoperatively diagnosed as gallbladder carcinoma, the prognosis was better in poorly than in non-visualized gallbladder cases. Non- or poor visualization by ERCP in operated cases was due to gallstones in 71%,

[Gallbladder carcinoma in Iceland 2004-2013].

INTRODUCTION: Gallbladder carcinoma is about 0.5% of all cancer. The outcome of patients with gallbladder carcinoma is overall bad and the only potentially curative treatment is surgery. The aim of this study was to determine the disease's prevalence in Iceland and outcome of the patients diagnosed in the study period. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of all diagnosed patients with gallbladder carcinoma during the years 2004-2013. A list of patients was obtained from the Icelandic Cancer Registry. Information was gathered from the patient's charts in Landspitali University

Magnitude of combination therapy of radical resection and external beam radiotherapy for patients with carcinomas of the extrahepatic bile duct and gallbladder.

The present study sought to identify the therapeutic efficacy of adjuvant external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) for carcinomas of the extrahepatic bile duct (EHBD) and gallbladder. Twenty-one patients with pathologically verified EHBD carcinoma and 18 patients with gallbladder carcinoma were analyzed retrospectively by Cox regression analysis for predictors of survival. The overall 5-year survival rates after resection were 33% for EHBD carcinoma and 56% for gallbladder carcinoma. The overall 5-year survival rate for EHBD carcinoma was 60% in 8 patients without microscopic residual disease (R0), 1

Synchronous Liver Abscess With Cholecystitis: A Rare Case of Initial Presentation of Gallbladder Cancer Posing a Diagnosis Challenge.

Gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) is the most common of all biliary tract cancers. GBC is a multifactorial disease. Gallbladder dysplasia from any gallbladder inflammatory condition is one of the main risk factors for GBC. The late diagnosis of GBC is a major problem in its treatment. It is treated by radical resection and the prognosis is improved by adjuvant chemoradiation. We present a rare case of gall bladder cancer presenting as hepatic abscesses with severe sepsis. An 83-year-old male presented with progressive symptoms of shakiness, general weakness, vomiting, and profuse diarrhea. Lab work

A rare case of gallbladder torsion with incidental stage IIIB gallbladder adenocarcinoma.

Gallbladder torsion is rare and can mimic acute cholecystitis. We report an 83-year-old female who presented with abdominal pain, leukocytosis, and hyperbilirubinemia. Work-up showed a distended, thick-walled gallbladder with stones and suspected choledocholithiasis. Because of worsening pain and concern for impending perforation, she underwent urgent cholecystectomy, which revealed a freely mobile gallbladder consistent with torsion. Final pathology showed a 0.4 cm poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma with metastatic involvement of a cystic duct lymph node (stage IIIB). Postoperatively, she u

Ultrasound-guided percutaneous transhepatic drainage of gallbladder followed by cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis--10 years' experience.

Acute cholecystitis is a common disease which may carry the risk of complications, including empyema, perforation, abscess, peritonitis and sepsis. Percutaneous transhepatic drainage of the gallbladder (PTGBD) with antibiotics can provide prompt decompression of gallbladder in acute cholecystitis and interrupt the natural history of the disease effectively. From July 1986 to June 1996, 154 patients with acute cholecystitis were reviewed retrospectively in Kaohsiung Medical College Hospital. The chief symptoms and signs were pain (98.1%), fever (57.1%) and jaundice (37.7%). WBC count more than

Synchronous cancers of gallbladder carcinoma and combined hepatocellular cholangiocarcinoma: an unusual case and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Synchronous primary cancers in gallbladder and liver are rarely reported. Here we report an unusual case of synchronous cancers of gallbladder carcinoma and combined hepatocellular cholangiocarcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION: Several lesions in the gallbladder and in adjacent parenchyma of liver were discovered in a 65-years-old woman by imaging examination. Surgical resection was performed following a diagnosis of primary gallbladder carcinoma with local hepatic metastasis. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of primary gallbladder carcinoma, and the lesions in the liver c

[Gallbladder volvulus: Diagnostic and surgical challenges].

BACKGROUND: The gallbladder volvulus is defined as the rotation of the gallbladder on its mesentery along the axis of the cystic duct and cystic artery. It is an extremely rare surgical disease and definitive diagnosis is usually made during surgery. CASE REPORT: A 78 year old woman presented with upper right quadrant abdominal pain, with no comorbidities and no other accompanying symptoms. Analysis revealed haemodynamic instability and leukocytosis. Computed tomography of abdomen showed an acute cholecystitis. During emergency right hypochondrium laparotomy, the gallbladder was found to be t
